We are passionate about the success of every student. We are as committed to the formation of character and compassion as we are to the development of competence. Dear Friends, It is with profoundly mixed emotions that I share with you that I will be retiring from Martin Methodist College effective January 31, 2017. For nearly nineteen years it has been my privilege to serve as Martin’s 30th president. It has truly been a labor of love, especially considering that I have been a part of the Martin experience of more than 6,000 individual students. I have come to feel so strongly about the values represented in this special institution of higher education: We are passionate about the success of every student. We are as committed to the formation of character and compassion as we are to the development of competence. We believe that no one is truly educated until they have contemplated the spiritual nature of humankind. And we are dedicated to educating good citizens who will ultimately serve the needs of others. This is what Martin Methodist College stands for, and I will always love and cherish that. At the same time, I am humbled by the recognition that the college’s progress over the last two decades has been the result of an amazing coalition of commitment—record numbers of alumni volunteers and generous donors, an accomplished faculty and dedicated staff, and a Board of Trustees that is second to none in its vision and loyalty. I am deeply grateful for the overwhelming support you have all shown. I recognize that few, if any, college presidents have been as blessed as I have been at Martin Methodist. While I believe it is accurate to say that Martin Methodist College has never been stronger, I think it has also never been more vulnerable. The challenges for the future are significant—from the incredible level of competition for students to the movement for free public education, and from the on-going debate about the cost and value of higher education to the infrastructure needs on our campus. Luckily, the Martin 2020 plan provides a roadmap to navigate these challenges and the fundraising campaign that is already underway will provide the resources needed to fully implement the plan. I have no doubt that Martin Methodist is poised to attract a superb new leader and to continue its remarkable advancement. My parting request is that we all redouble our efforts to realize the unique potential of Martin Methodist College.

During Christmas Break of 2013, I was encouraged by two friends to leave my local community college and go to Martin Methodist College. I reassured them that I would consider it, but in all honesty, I was afraid. I had grown accustomed to the familiarity of a community college, and the thought of swapping to a school I knew nothing about terrified me. However, after a few weeks of careful consideration, I made a decision. While I was enjoying my time at the community college, I had no definite plans for the future, and suddenly, the thought of settling with an Associate’s Degree in General Education did not seem as appealing as it did a few months earlier. With that realization hot on my mind, I started sending out what would be the first of many emails to Martin Methodist. A short time later, I found myself sitting with my mom in Vice President for Campus Life and Enrollment Management (currently Interim President) Robby Shelton’s office. It was during this meeting where everything seemed to fall into place. Mr. Shelton informed me that I would be able to get scholarships based on my grades. He even went as far as to tell my mom and I just how much I would be getting. The idea of getting financial support based on my grades alone was one that I was not familiar with but one that I greatly appreciated. Just from that meeting, I saw going to school at Martin Methodist as a reward for the grades I’ve worked very hard to maintain. By Fall of 2014, I was starting my first semester at Martin Methodist. I was scared, confused on which building to be in, and I was often left wondering if I had made the right decision. But as I fell into a familiar routine, I began to notice what made this college stand out from others- intimacy and opportunity. It quickly became apparent just how welcoming the teachers and faculty members of Martin Methodist were. They went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable, and they always kept me up-to-date with the latest opportunities that would interest me. As a senior now, I am still constantly amazed by the intimacy and opportunities that this school provides. If someone had asked me

where I saw myself in five years right after my high school graduation, I would have simply told them “I don’t know.” But since coming to Martin Methodist, I’ve developed goals for myself and plans for the future, all with the help of a school that I now know as my second home. I see the teachers and faculty members as my secondary family who guide me in the right direction. For instance, I am not quite sure where I would be without the support and guidance from my advisor Dr. Kayla Wiggins, English professor. She is always informing me of new opportunities, such as my current internship under Director of Communications Sissy Garner. Dr. Wiggins works closely with me to make sure that I am on track while having a memorable and beneficial college experience. Just like every other senior, I am eagerly awaiting the day where I will walk across the stage to get my degree. I used to think that I would celebrate the day for I will finally be done after seventeen straight years of education, but I’m quickly realizing that graduating is bittersweet. I am going to miss the familiarity and intimacy of this college; however, I am no longer hesitant about the future, and I have this college to thank for that. I cannot wait to proudly say that I am an alumna of Martin Methodist College. Kyla is from Lewisburg, Tenn. She’s a 2012 graduate from Marshall County High School. She’s currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in English with an emphasis in Writing and Language.
