The Virtual World and Google Earth

&

What Is a Virtual World? What is a virtual World? Is an online community that takes place in a computer base sumulated environment through which users can interact with one another and use and create objects. Users create their own avatar to travel to different worlds. Other users take their time and recreate real life places like the cistine chapel, Greece and new York city. Mostly virtual worlds can be found on online multiplayer games such as world of warcraft, final fantasy and and such. There is even a form of some type of economy where you earn money and spend money on things, items include weapons, clothes, buildings. As of late virtual worlds have become more of a place for long distance education. Where students can gather and put in input on certain subjects.

What Is a Google Earth? What is google earth? It is a virtual globe, map and geographical information program. Google earth is is a globe where it super imposes pictures of the earth on a globe using satellite imagery, and ariel photography Google earth explores the real world by taking the user to the real place on earth by using 3D buildings, street view, real life topography. Google is very limited to interaction because its only one user. There isn't any form of communication among other users in this virtual globe, and the hands on experience is very limited in term of seeing the buildings, and not actually going inside of them. In terms of educational purposes, google earth is a very good tool in terms of bringing students to places that they cannot visit, but in terms of full interaction, it is very limited

Can They Work Together? Can These two work together? Sure they can! Like they say Two heads are better than one. With having virtual worlds, and Google earth working together, the amount of knowledge and interaction by using both programs can be endless. Google earth helps locate where specific places are to help you keep track where on the earth it is, while a virtual world can help you explore specific places and buildings that the admin of that place created. Most of the time you would have to trust in the user who created the simulated the building.

Pros and Cons of Second Life The pros of second life The pro of second life are as follows:  interactive enviornements  Interaction among other users  Well represented locations  Graphics are very detailed

The cons of second life The cons of second life are as follows:  limited locations to follow  Requires a fast computer to run it  Accuracy of building can be misleading  Requires an account  Very specific on the content, needs more accurate variety

17

Pros and Cons of Google Earth The pros of google earth The pro of google earth are as follows:  accurate location of places on earth  Quick reference to places on earth  No need for user account  Can also reference on google maps as well  No need to fast computer  Photos from users all over the globe post

The cons of google earth The cons of google earth are as follows:  Not as interactive  Depending on the city it could take forever to load the buildings  No user interaction among other users  No interactions in regards to walking in buildings

18

Conclusion Both tools are essential in terms of learning, and can be used hand in hand. One can’t judge which is better, but more like these programs can more like compliment each other. Virtual worlds are still in the process of making learning easier and more fun. There are developers who are constantly upgrading new buildings and environments to enhance the learning experience. Google earth is already here, but still very limited in terms of interaction. But that doesn't mean is worse. Google earth helps you understand the locations of other places, and helps bring the student there on the computer for absolutely nothing rather than spending thousands of dollars in travel costs to see the sites up close and personal Like I said in chapter 2, two heads are better than one.
