WHY SAN SEBASTIAN: HOST FOR ISSPD 2020 CONFERENCE Any excuse is a good reason to visit San Sebastian or Donostia, its name in Euskera or Basque language; the oldest in all Europe, the prime example of Basque culture. Beyond the inimitable beauty of La Concha bay, which so fascinated royalty at the beginning of the last century and continues to captivate everyone who casts an eye over it today. The city is the stage for innovative gastronomy that has gained fame the world over, has a wide range of festivals which have made it an authentic cultural phenomenon (as evidenced by the city being chosen the European Capital of Culture 2016), and an active and healthy lifestyle which is very in touch with the natural resources it offers (2019 San Sebastiรกn Turismo Donostia Turismo, S.A.) MICHELIN STARS

Actually in San Sebastian the gastronomy is one of the strongest points of the city, with each pintxo and dish the city want to transmit different emotions. Therefore, in 2017 it was chosen as the best gastronomic destination of the world. The importance that is given to the kitchen in the city it has make to San Sebastian to become a universal icon of the gastronomy.

Taking as a point of reference the town hall of San Sebastian, there are 17 restaurants with Michelin stars in a radius of 25 kilometers. 3 of the 11 restaurants with three Michelin stars of Spain are located in the city of San Sebastian, which are Arzak, Akelarre and Martin Berasategui. We can find Mugaritz as the only restaurant with two stars and Kokotxa, Mirador de Ulía, Zuberoa and Amelia with one star. A bit further from San Sebastian we can also locate the restaurants Alameda and Elkano with one star each of them.

It offers a wide extensive and quality variety of restaurants and bars in which you can visit the city several times without repeating the sites and always having an unforgettable experience. Not only in the center of the city, all the neighborhoods have an offer of it. You can eat from pot or from pintxos, sitting or standing in a fine site or the most popular basque bar. It does not matter, in this city you eat right in all ways.

PINTXOS Bites of pleasure Pintxos are the essence and soul of our cuisine. Traditionally, the pintxo was a slice of bread with a little portion of food on it, secured with a toothpick, that is where the name comes from. Nowadays we have a huge variety to surprise even the most demanding client, from the most classic pintxo, such as potato omelette or wide and olive, to the most innovative cuisine. In our culture going for pintxos is considered more than just a gastronomical experience, it is a social act and a great opportunity to get to explore our history and culture while having an awesome time. You can enjoy pintxos all around the city in the different neighbourhoods: the Old Town (here are located the most famous bars), Antiguo, Gros…

TIPS & TRICKS: If the pintxo is meant to be eaten cold, you can take it directly from the bar, if it is meant to be eaten hot, you should ask the waiter. The most common thing is to pay when you are finished. Here, group of friends usually decide to add a small amount of money per person to pay for this, called “bote”. Every bar has their Star Pintxo, we recommend asking for it if you do not know what to choose. PINTXOPOTE: This is an initiative organised by the local owners of bars to encourage people to consume. This includes the pintxo and the drink for the price of the just the pintxo. Each neighbourhood celebrates this day on a different day of the week, and it held approximately from 19:00 to 22:00.
