CAPABILITY STATEMENT MBDS aims to deliver iconic, revenue making destinations whilst crafting immersive, memorable experiences.

Our skill lies in our ability to understand places and people and give them what they want and often, more importantly, what they never knew they needed from the places they choose to visit. This ensures we create a destination for locals, guests and visitors that transcends all that has come before it and sets a new precedent for hospitality in this area of London and the Shangri-La brand. Our approach places context at the heart of the design process, when we travel to a new place we want to feel we are having an experience that is unique to that place and that can’t be replicated elsewhere. We ensure we understand the culture, spirit and specifically the history of a place or in this instance a world famous brand and incorporate this into the interior scheme in an elegant and natural way. Our service has been carefully crafted to ensure that we offer a holistic approach to design that takes into consideration every single detail. We understand that interior design goes far further than the physical appearance of a space and is about enchanting every one of our senses.

UNDERSTANDING THE PROJECT THE SHANGRI-LA BRAND ‘‘To treat a stranger as one of our own” Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts motto ‘Shangri-La’, the fictional phrase made famous by James Hilton’s 1933 novel Lost Horizon has become the word to describe any place as a paradise, a mythical utopia, a permanently happy land, isolated from the world in perfection and wellbeing. Therefore it seems apt that for over 40 years Shangri La Hotels and Resorts have been amongst the most luxurious hotels in the world and have become the Asia Pacific regions leading luxury brand. Strongly rooted in Asia yet with properties all over the globe, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts bring the world a slice of the Orient with them wherever they go and give the guests the opportunity to experience refined Asian hospitality with an international outlook.

©

Evoking the spirit and tradition of Asia in a luxurious, contemporary setting Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is a brand that has become a byword for elegance and distinction. Given this, our approach to understanding this brand is to go back to its origins and re-present our view of the exoticism of the Orient, impeccable service and custom in an international and progressive setting that embodies the culture of Asian art and design and its influence on the rest of the world. Thus creating a new future and perspective for the brand that has won the hearts of millions of the worlds most discerning travellers and established itself as a market leader.

UNDERSTANDING THE PROJECT THE NEIGHBOURHOOD Built in 2009, The Shard is an iconic addition to the London skyline. Located on the south bank of the River Thames, the glass structure casts its shadow over London Bridge and across to the historic City of London. Its location is synonymous with food and drink, thanks to its proximity to Borough Market and Maltby Street, two foodie destinations that have helped established Borough, and The Shard, as must-see areas of South London.

The bringing together of the old and new, as well as traditional eastern hospitality with western culture, will see the restaurant at the Shangri La Hotel become a destination for those local to the area and visitors of the capital. MBDS seeks to reinterpret the neighbourhood’s heritage in a way that will ground the Shangri La in history whilst creating a place that’s exciting and compliments the attitudes of modern London.

The market area has been around in Borough for around 1,000 years and was a crucial part to London’s thoroughfare for commerce thanks to its situation right next to London Bridge. A gateway to the rest of the city and the north bank, Borough is a unique area of London with a rich history and strong heritage. The location of The Shard and the Shangri La benefits from this as it still is mecca for foodies and those seeking to discover London’s commercial history.

SCARFES BAR | LONDON Scarfes Bar, among the best bars in Holborn, is inspired by the atmosphere of a drawing room and the sophistication of a gentlemens’ club. It features a roaring fire, low-key lighting, a collection of cosy velvet armchairs and shelves filled with more than 1,000 antique books hand-picked by a Portobello antique dealer. The bartenders are true connoisseurs of their craft, from advising on beers and matching wines to preparing specially-curated cocktails, some of which are poured from a stunning silver urn that takes centre stage on the long wooden bar. Complimentary live music seven nights a week further adds to the conviviality of this artfully social bar where potions and paintings meet.

CAFE BOULUD | FOUR SEASONS, TORONTO Part of the Four Seasons Hotel Toronto is Café Boulud, the 142 cover brasserie designed by MBDS in 2015. Channelling a classic mid-century aesthetic with a contemporary twist, the brasserie displays a modern playfulness whilst feeling comfortably current. Its warm colour palette of burnt orange and green elegantly matches the sophistication of the hotel in which it occupies.

THE IVY | LONDON In 2015 MBDS were approached to redesign the iconic West End restaurant, The Ivy. Now 100 years old, the restaurant has an extensive history deeply rooted in theatre, glamour and celebrity. MBDS took the heritage and tradition of the restaurant and created a design which would bring the space into the modern day. A central bar was added and the dining area was reconfigured. Now each table in the restaurant feels special, with no sense of “Siberia”. The original harlequin windows, British art collection and sculptural staircase by Eduardo Paolozzi remained a central part to the design whilst the introduction of mohair velvet, soft leather and timber paneling helped create a space that felt like it had always been there.

THE BEEKMAN | NEW YORK The Beekman is is a 287 room Thompson Hotel located near Manhattan’s Financial District. Originally called Temple Court and built in 1881 in the American Queen Anne style, the rich architectural history of the building guided the design of the hotel. From its distinctive exterior, to the beauty of the dilapidated Victorian interior found inside, The Beekman is a hotel with provenance and its new interior scheme compliments this story. When approaching this project, it was clear the nine-storey original atrium was the jewel in the crown. We felt it was important we restored this space without it becoming a museum. We therefore decided to relocate the reception of the hotel to the side of the building, giving guests their own private entrance after a long day of travelling. This allowed us to activate the main atrium space, as with hotel guests having their own space to enter the building away from crowds, it meant we could give life to the building’s main attraction and turn it into a space for the city to enjoy.

©

On entering The Beekman, the public spaces have been crafted so as to maximise ambience. The atrium is momentous in scale but through the clever groupings of the furniture, we managed to create little intimate corners where visitors can feel comfortable and cosy. Further activating the space, we placed a bar down one side of the atrium providing added design details and also allowing guests a secondary reference point and place to perch, while deciding whether to go onto the restaurant, take a seat in the atrium lounge or stay for a drink. Through creating this space the guest is subtly directed to their chosen activity, helping with flow, while also ensuring they feel comfortable and not overwhelmed by a space that is architecturally large.
