EXCAVATIONS IN CAIRO

PROJECT: MASTER’S DEGREE THESIS INSTITUTION: POLITECNICO DI MILANO - ARCHITECTURE, 2012-2013 WITH: ONG LIVEINSLUMS 8


N

NNNN THE CITY OF THE DEAD, LOCALLY CALLED AL QARAFA, IS THE HISTORICAL AND MONUMENTAL CEMETERY OF CAIRO. THE PLACE IS CURRENTLY INHABITED BY ABOUT 800,000 PEOPLE WHO HAVE OCCUPIED THE FUNERAL CHAPELS AND MAUSOLEUMS USED FOR THE BURIAL OF THE DEAD, MAKING THEM THEIR PERMANENT DWELLINGS. THE PROJECT DESIGNS A HYPOGAEUM MUSEUM OF THANATOLOGY TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF THE SITE’S HERITAGE.

REGENERATING CORVIALE

CORVIALE LOOKS LIKE ONE LARGE BUILDING 1 KM LONG IN THE SUBURB OF ROME. THE AIM IS TO UNDERMINE THE MODERN PARADIGM OF THE BUILDING-CITY OF THE 70S. THE PROJECT IS THE DESIGN OF THE FRAGMENTATION. ON THE ONE HAND IT BREAKS THE HORIZONTALITY OF CORVIALE TO PROJECT IT TOWARDS THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND THE NATURE RESERVES. THE OTHER DIVIDES IN 7 BUILDINGS WHICH IN TURN ARE ORGANIZED INTO CLUSTERS TO IMPROVE THE INTERNAL MANAGEMENT.

OOOO EVERY YEAR THE NUMEROUS SIKH TEMPLES BUILT ACROSS THE ITALIAN FARMLANDS OF THE PIANURA PADANA HOST A HUGE SIKH FESTIVAL CALLED VAISAKHI. DURING THIS TIME, THE RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY OF THE ITALIAN RURAL POPULATION BECOMES EVIDENT. THIS HIGHLIGHTS HOW URBAN CHANGE FOR RELIGIOUS PURPOSES HAPPENS MUCH MORE SWIFTLY THAN ANY CHANGE IN URBAN PLANNING POLICIES.

LOOKING AT THE CENTRAL VENETO AND ZOOMING INTO ITS INHERENT CHARACTERISTICS IS A WAY TO SEE NEW OPPORTUNITIES, GERMS OF A FUTURE-ORIENTED NARRATIVE. UNCONSCIOUS METROPOLIS PRESENTS THE TERRITORY AS THE RESULT OF ITS DAILY DYNAMICS. INSTEAD OF LOOKING JUST AT THE PHYSICAL OUTCOME, THE CONTRIBUTION RATHER FOCUSES ON THE PROCESS THAT PRODUCES IT, GIVING VOICE TO THE LIVING MOTOR OF THE CUMULATIVE LANDSCAPE OF CENTRAL VENETO.

J WELCOME IS AT ONCE A POINT OF VIEW, A DECORATED ENTRANCE AND A CELEBRATION OF MOVEMENT IN SPACE. THE SHAPE OF THE CURTAIN RELATES TO THE COLLECTIVE MEMORY OF OLD GROCERY SHOPS AND THE BACKGROUND OF A STAGE SHOW. CROSSING THE ENTRANCE, THE VISITOR INSTANTLY RECONSTRUCTS A SCENARIO MADE OF SUDDEN REVELATIONS, DOMESTIC INTERIORS AND THE EXPECTATION FOR A SHOW THAT IS ABOUT TO BEGIN.
