A New Concept in The Galleria Area AFFORDABLE LUXURY HOTELS

The Galleria / Uptown area is known as Houston's primary attraction for international, business and leisure travelers. Hotels, dining and shopping, it can all be found here and stretching into River Oaks. When it comes to hospitality, with brands such as St. Regis, Granduca, Omni, Hyatt, Westin Galleria, JW Marriott, to name a few, the area keeps on topping itself. And since the opening of The Post Oak Hotel, we have reached the peak in luxury accommodations.

Choosing between the same location and similar amenities, options for travelers start at about $180 per night.

Now there is a new player in The Galleria area, with a creative new concept in affordable luxury hotels. The owners of American Liberty, a hospitality organization with over ten properties in Houston and Galveston, had the vision to build two brand new hotels standing tall within one building in the heart of Galleria: Staybridge Suites and Holiday Inn Express, part of Intercontinental Hotels Group. What makes this combo so unique is the fact that these two properties are not what we are used to seeing. Their architecture, design, decor, and amenities are well in line with some of the Uptown / Galleria top hotels, with some additional advantages.

A modern and beautiful lobby that stretches on both sides of the front desk welcomes guests to a rewarding experience.

Located 100 yards North of Westheimer Rd. on the West Loop feeder, the location is a key feature here. Both brands blend in a single building, but clearly defined.

They merge in a large and modern lobby, with a diversity of comfortable seating areas. Both hotels also share a fitness center, a beautiful rooftop pool and conference rooms, as well as many suites on each floor.

An interesting note is a full bar in the lobby, where you can also enjoy light bites, something you don't see under these brands.

Staybridge Suites include fully equipped kitchen to cook your favorite meal, in addition to complimentary high speed internet, smart televisions with a variety of programming options, and housekeeping on demand.

On the Holiday Inn Express side, you’ll find contemporary and modern luxury. Everything you need to relax and stay productive, keep in touch with your office and home with complimentary high-speed internet access and a 24-hour Business Center, is there. You will enjoy a complimentary hearty Express Start™ Breakfast Bar each morning to begin your day. For a nightcap, guests can enjoy a cocktail, beer or a glass of wine in the Lobby

Bar. Maintain your fitness routine at the 24hour Fitness Center and take a dip and relax in a beautiful outdoor heated pool overlooking the beautiful Galleria skylyne. Luxurious Simply Smart beds with a choice of comfortable pillows guarantee a great night sleep.

But the best of all is that you get a luxury hotel, in the best part of town, literally within walking distance from The Galleria, the River Oaks District, and Highland Village, at a price no other luxury hotel in this area can match.

So, if you are a family looking for a great spot to enjoy your leisure time with friends, or a corporation interested in hosting a business conference, this is your special place. Travelers and organizations bringing guests to Houston can now take advantage of their convenient beautiful rooms with everything that you need for a fabulous extended stay, at a rate that will make you smile. Stay smart!

We'll see you there!

Masaad family, owners of American Liberty.

HOUSTON: AN

INSPIRING

PATCHWORK OF GLOBAL DESIGN

Known as one of the largest, most diverse cities in the United States, Houston is eclectic in almost every way, including home design. If you call Houston home, or are looking to make your place in Houston, there is definitely a home for you here. Eclectic means deriving ideas, style, or taste from a diverse range of sources. With Houston being the largest city in Texas, and the fourth-largest in America, it is full of possibilities, inspiration, culture and excitement.

By Kathy Anderson, Senior Design Editor Founder and owner of Eklektik Interiors

GLOBAL DESIGN:

The reason I named my design firm Eklektik is because I love merging different ideas and styles from around the world. One of my passions is keeping updated on the latest international design ideas and products through travel, but I also love and respect the influence of local talent in Houston. Because of the digital world we live in, design is increasingly more global. We can see what is happening in all parts of the world instantly, and it is fascinating to discover what different designs come from different ways of living.

We also have easier accessibility to products from around the world, leading to a more global design aesthetic. Whether you live in a high rise in the city or a ranch on the outskirts, you can infuse your personal style into your home and add your own colorful piece to the patchwork that is Houston.

DESIGN INSPIRATION:

Developing what interior designers call the “design eye”— looking for inspiration in everything around you—is in part a gift but can also be refined through experience. I work hard to not only bring great experience to my designs, but also something current and unique to each client. I always tell my clients not to just copy something you like. Take the time to study and come up with your own look. That’s not to say you can’t incorporate things into your designs that you are inspired by but add your own unique perspective on it. With more than 145 languages spoken and the fusion of food, art and community from around the world, Houston is full of opportunity for inspiration. Wherever you are in the city or whatever you are participating in, open your ‘design eye’ and you will be amazed at all the variety Houston has to offer. Here are a few examples of where I find inspiration in my hometown.

NATURE AND PEOPLE:

I am constantly inspired by nature. Some of the greatest color pallets come from a sunrise or sunset, a beautiful garden or seasonal changes, all of which the greatest Creator of all has given us to inspire and lift us. Beauty can be found everywhere. The simplest of forms can inspire, and Houston boasts variety in landscape and nature.

My clients are my biggest inspiration. They are each unique and bring their own perspective to a project. It is my job to capture them in their home design, and I love that. I’m inspired as I get to know each individual client, their family culture and what is important to them. Together we can make magic happen and really enjoy the design process together as we create a cohesive design that is not only beautiful, but functions on every level and enhances their living experience. Every job is an opportunity to learn and grow a new friendship.

This new custom home on the outskirts of Houston is a blend of rustic elements with a Texas Hill Country meets Tuscan style. Mixing finishes in the bedroom adds visual interest and texture with natural elements and colors of the Texas landscape.

ART AND FOOD:

Houston has great restaurants. I would put it up against NYC any day. We love our dining in Houston, and we are lucky to have so much to choose from. One of my favorites is MAD, here in Houston. It is a sensory overload, but in a great way. Their first restaurant, BCN, is completely different in design—small, intimate, and almost sedate in feel. Both have amazing food, and I highly recommend them. I also love exploring dive bars! They have a story. I love it when things are not perfect but are unique and have their own set of nuances. They have the most interesting people and food!

We are blessed to live in a city that has a great cultural scene and is committed to the arts, both visual and performance. The Menil Collection is an artistic treasure here in Houston. I love the grounds, buildings, exhibits, and just the way I feel when I am there.

The city skyline is art itself and provides an exquisite backdrop for this living space where the color and aesthetic of city life is highlighted in the furniture, lighting and accessories.
Two places I love to go for inspiration in Houston- feeding the body and the soul. The Menil Collection (left, photo courtesy of the Menil by Kevin Keim) and MAD Houston (right, photo courtesy of MAD Houston).

HOUSTON SPIRIT:

I LOVE Houston. I love the giving spirit of this amazing city. Houston has a heart as big as Texas. We have been through hard things together, and we come out stronger and more committed to our community. I try to live up to that. What I do as a designer is not rocket science, but it can make a big difference in the way someone lives, and I do not take that lightly. I have been blessed in so many aspects of my life and the way to show true gratitude is to share and support projects and charities that lift others and build our beautiful city. Quietly doing for others is a great way to use your power and to receive the greatest inspiration in designing your life and surroundings.

Inspiration is easily found in designing for remarkable clients like this retired global oil well fire fighter. We were able to incorporate his distinguished career and world travels into his home design, as shown in the artwork and furniture in his home bar.

THE ULTIMATE Home Theatre EXPERIENCE

A Texas-pride

In an era of virtual realities, 3D animations have become the future in our hands today. Software for the development of animations is readily available for anyone; so are Formula 1 race cars. However, not many are ready for the ride.

Only a few can actually say they have mastered the complicated world of 3D animations, although there is a much higher need and demand for 3D creators than for formula drivers.

gFORCE Animation, Inc. is a dual company founded by Slade Deliberto and Paul Ehmer in Houston, Texas.

Slade is one of the top 3D animators in the United States and the creator of some of the most extraordinary 3D animations in oil & gas, energy, exhibition companies, and museums, to name a few.

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN + TECHNOLOGY

His work has been utilized by feature films and top advertising agencies around the country. The name came about based on Slades' "gFORCE" fast animation skills and military background.

Paul Ehmer is a network specialist with relationships at the highest level within fields such as Manufacturing, Distribution, Oil & Gas, Energy, Media Clusters, Live Event Production, TV & Film, Custom LED Wall Installation, and design, to name a few.

They saw a need that could be filled by providing high-end creative content and visuals from small start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. They have since expanded into the Micro Led world, adding a product that goes hand in hand with video animation, by offering massive-scale screens for fully immersive experiences or "smaller" screens for personal use in outdoor spaces, venues, trade shows, home theaters, and much more.

MicroLED screens are similar to OLEDs in their

gFORCE will produce animations only limited by your own imagination.

self-emissive properties, but instead of using organic lightemitting diodes, they use tiny, non-organic LEDs. That means that each pixel can be turned on or off individually, or can display a completely different color to the one next to it. The result is essentially perfect contrast and color control.

The extraordinary alternative offered by gFORCE is that there is no limit to the size, shape, or form of the screen. It may be used in walls, ceilings, and even floors. It can be 100 inches wide or 100 yards long. It can cover your entire home-theater wall, your conference room wall, or the side of a building.

Rectangular, square, oval, round, vertical or horizontal, straight, circled or waved, there is no limit other than your need or imagination. No matter the size, the ultra-high resolution remains the same. Indoors it's usually used at 40% of its actual brightness, otherwise, it will be as bright as a light panel. Outdoors, you can increase the brightness to see a perfect image under direct sunlight. Just imagine! Its waterresistant capability makes it ideal for a pool screen.

Once the screen is installed, gFORCE can provide state-ofthe-art interactive graphics to show off any brand or content. Even in private in-home use, having your own personal emblem or family customized video graphics to entertain and impress your guests. Properly installed, it can actually even be framed to be mobile. The signal comes out of a computer, so the possibilities are infinite.

gFORCE effectively supports clients like the Houston Museum of Natural Science, OMRON, Group 1 Automotive, Be An Angel Foundation, Shilling Robotics, and many more, sell and

display their ideas through their creative visual expertise and technology.

They have found that not only can this content make products far more marketable, but it can actually be used to do so much more than that.

While participating with Be An Angel Foundation to provide VR experiences for children with special needs, they were able to see firsthand the power and benefit of immersive technology. Children with special needs that were initially upset and uncomfortable, became instantly soothed upon entering the virtual simulations.

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN + TECHNOLOGY

There are also projects focusing on PTSD, anxiety, depression, pain management, and many other medical and psychological applications.

With innovations in the fields of immersive therapeutics, athletic training, green energy, restaurants, entertainment, empathy training, industrial safety, travel, real estate, education, and so much more, they can use this technology to truly impact the world interacts with itself. All it takes is the vision and the gFORCE's team to make it a reality.

The resolution and the adjustable brightness of this technology allows you to watch a movie or animation in plain sunlight with the same impact as in a dark hometheater.

And in closing, leaving the best for last, the best part is that the product comes from the same manufacturer as the leading brands, without the hefty price tag.

For more information, or to visit their showroom in The Woodlands, you may want to call Paul at 281.541.0309, or visit gforceanimation.com.

E-1 and E-2 Investor Visas AND SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES OF IMMIGRANTS IN OUR GREAT CITY

Houston is a multicultural and a diverse city, with 145 languages spoken in the city as per the latest U.S. Census data. It is truly international, which is why people from all over the world call Houston home. Many foreign nationals choose to invest in Houston because of the great opportunities it affords. The investor visa they qualify for generally depends on the amount of their investment. Some individuals come to this country and to Houston with an EB-5 investor visa. While the EB-5 visa is a great option for those who are prepared for a very significant investment, and it provides a path to residency and ultimately to U.S. citizenship, it is not for everyone as it requires a minimum investment of $500,000. That is why many foreign

nationals choose differently and come to the United States through another investor visa option, known as the Treaty Trader (E-1), or Treaty Investor (E-2) visa.

The E-1 and E-2 visas are for citizens of countries with which the United States maintains treaties of commerce and navigation. The purpose of the investor visa is for a foreign national to come to the United States to engage in substantial trade, including trade in services or technology, principally between the United States and the treaty country; or develop and direct the operations of an enterprise in which one has invested a substantial amount of capital.

Treaty Treader E-1 Visa requirements, generally:

• You must be a citizen of a treaty country.

• The trading firm for which you plan to come to the United States must have the nationality of the treaty country, meaning persons with the treaty country’s nationality must own at least 50 percent of the enterprise.

• The international trade must be substantial, meaning that there is a sizable and continuing volume of trade.

• More than 50 percent of the international trade involved must be between the United States and the treaty country.

• Trade means the international exchange of goods, services, and technology.

• You must be an essential employee, employed in a supervisory or executive capacity, or possess highly specialized skills essential to the efficient operation of the firm.

To qualify as a Treaty Investor E-2 Visa, generally:

• The investor, either a person, partnership or corporate entity, must have the citizenship of a treaty country.

• If a business, at least 50 percent of the business must be owned by persons with the treaty country’s nationality.

• The investment must be substantial, with investment funds or assets committed and irrevocable.

• The investment must be a real operating enterprise, an active commercial or entrepreneurial undertaking.

• It must generate significantly more income than just to provide a living, or it must have a significant economic impact in the United States.

• You must have control of the funds, and the investment must be at risk in the commercial sense.

• You must be coming to the United States to develop

and direct the enterprise. If you are not the principal investor, you must be considered an essential employee, employed in a supervisory, executive, or highly specialized skill capacity.

When an individual is outside the United States, the individual must apply to a U.S Embassy or Consulate in the home country for the E-1 or the E-2 visa. While within the United States an applicant may be able to request that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) change the status to an E-1 or E-2 visa.

Houston is made better by successful investments of immigrants from all over the world. As an immigrant and as an Albanian, however, I must speak about the Albanian community in Houston and their successful investments. It is impossible to mention them all, but I am very fond of the Brother’s Pizzeria with seven locations throughout our city, not only for their pizza which is one of a kind, but because they do so much for the Houston community. You can find the owners at any given day delivering pizza and providing free lunches for the firefighters or to the medical personnel.

I am also very impressed with Underground Hall, located in Houston’s beautiful downtown, which opened in the midst of the pandemic, and is flourishing. Visit Moonshine Deck in the Houston Heights, and Good Times Café on Travis Street, for great food and Happy Hours. I can’t wait for the opening of D’Alba Draft and Kitchen in Garden Oaks and Oak Forest this summer. These newly started and very cool and hip cafes and restaurants are a blend of the multicultural food in Houston and the Albanian hospitality at its best. The most interesting parts about those businesses, however, are the stories of immigrants behind them, and their courage to do something great in our city that we all love, even during a pandemic.

or Lake Conroe?

Who

would ever imagine Houston would have a world-class, beach-style, lake resort? For a quick getaway, definitely, there is no contest! Since the opening of Margaritaville Lake Resort, Conroe wins over any waterfront hotel.

If you're looking for a family-friendly place to escape this summer, paradise is just a short 15-minute ride from The Woodlands or 40 minutes from River Oaks.

I want to start by making a statement about the 303-suite hotel: just fabulous. If you drove with your eyes closed up to the valet parking by the lobby, and opened your eyes inside your suite, you would definitely believe you are in a beach resort along the Florida coast line. The decor is absolutely breautiful and at the best Caribean-style, with balconies overlooking fabulous lake Conroe into the horizon. Breathtaking! And the 32 very private cottages right by the water are perfect to park your car on one side and your boat on the other. Simply gorgeous!

This tropical oasis truly has something for everyone, from renting a boat and taking a spin around Lake

Conroe to splashing around the waterpark, the resort offers the ideal backdrop for creating fun and lasting memories.

Resort accommodations work well for families of any size. Whether you choose to stay in one of the suites in the guest tower or a colorful lakeside cottage, there are separate living and bedroom quarters which are also furnished with a pull-out sofa bed. Some of the lakeside cottages include lofts with two double beds, great for families with young children.

Young and old alike will enjoy cooling off at Jolly Mon, the three-acre waterpark, which includes a lazy river, splash zone, waterslides, hot tub, and five pools. After splashing around in the pools, you can play some mini golf, start a game of pickleball, or treat the kids to some fun at Fin City Arcade.

WHERE FLASHING

Multiple settings and opportunities to enjoy with friends and family.

And if you are into boating, set yourself up for a jet-ski, a family boat, or a 100-people party-boat on the water.

And to top all the fun Margaritaville Lake Resort has to offer, there is a waterfront nightclub well under construction and weeks away from opening.

Your chance to indulge yourself with the finest in Spas.

And if you are into golf, this stop is a must to wrap a memorable experience.

The suites aree absolutely gorgeous, with balconies overlooking the lake amd the park.

With five pools, a lazy river and a number of attractions, the waterpark is an adventure within the adventure.

For moms looking to relax and unwind in style, St. Somewhere Spa, an 18,000 square-foot wellness retreat, offers an array of revitalizing options to restore their inner Zen. Dads wanting to chill out can book a spa treatment, too, or schedule a tee time on the 18- hole golf course.

No one will go hungry at Margaritaville Lake Resort, when it's time to eat. There are plenty of options onsite, including LandShark Bar & Grill, which serves a variety of family favorites such as fish tacos, burgers, and more, right by the water. Gather around and enjoy live entertainment as you watch the sunset over beautiful Lake Conroe, and then, stroll on over to Toes and the Sand, adjacent to LandShark Bar & Grill, and have s'mores as a family by the beach.

TRAVEL & ADVENTURE

License to Chill Bar & Cafe is another option for family dining. The eatery offers various salads, sandwiches, and an enormous giant pretzel the kids will love. Sunday brunch is served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., where everyone will find something tasty to savor.

If you're on the run in between adventures, Joe Merchant's Coffee & Provisions on the first floor of the guest tower offers "grab and go" options, including pizza, sandwiches, and your favorite Starbucks™ concoctions.

Be sure to check out the Guest Compass daily for a listing of activities happening at the resort. From scavenger hunts to live music to arts and crafts to lawn games, there's always something fun to do at Margaritaville Lake Resort!

Other opportunities include a multi-room event center with spaces to hold anything from a large and romantic wedding by the lake, to conventions, shows, or business gatherings of any size.

SC20

Lamborghini Squadra Corse just introduced the SC20, a unique specimen of an open-top track car type-approved for road use. The SC20 is the second one-off engineered by the motorsport department and designed by Centro Stile in Sant’Agata Bolognese: the car was created following the customer’s wishes, who was involved in the project from the very first drawings by Lamborghini’s designers.

The common goal was to build a unique vehicle, extreme in its design and performance, and able to combine aerodynamic solutions taken from racing Lamborghinis incorporating unprecedented lines and exclusive details. “Two years after the SC18 Alston, the SC20 was a new, intriguing challenge, introduced when the end of the pandemic was still quite uncertain. The chief sources of inspiration were the Diablo VT Roadster, Aventador J, Veneno Roadster and Concept S, and the result is a dramatic

combination of creativity and racing attitude,” commented Mitja Borkert, Head of Design Lamborghini Centro Stile.

The carbon fiber body was polished and slicked down by hand by the Lamborghini aerodynamic engineers to deliver optimal airflow for both performance and the cockpit’s occupants, ensuring comfortable open-air driving even at high speeds. The pronounced front splitter is framed by two fins and the air intakes on the front hood are inspired by those of the Huracán GT3 EVO, while the sculpted body sides reflect the solutions adopted on the Essenza SCV12. The muscular rear is topped by a large carbon fiber wing that can be set in three different positions: Low, Medium and High Load.

The SC20 features exclusive details starting from the body colors on a Bianco Fu (white) base, created for the customer,

on which the Blu Cepheus (blue) livery stands out. The same shade is found in the interior, alternating with Nero Cosmus (black) and Bianco Leda (white). The most significant element of the passenger compartment is the visible carbon fiber used for the dashboard cover, rear wall, door panels, center console and steering wheel trim, in addition to the monocoque. Carbon fiber is also used for the shells of the seats upholstered in Alcantara and leather. The door handles on the other hand, are machined from solid aluminum. Lastly, the air vents are created using 3D printing technology at the Sant’Agata Bolognese factory.

Maurizio Reggiani, Chief Technical Officer of Automobili Lamborghini, stated, “The SC20 is a combination of sophisticated engineering, Italian craftsmanship, sportiness and advanced design. It is also an example of applying our V12 engine and carbon fiber to a radical open-top vehicle that unmistakably carries the Lamborghini DNA.”

Its engine is based on Lamborghini’s flagship V12: the 6,498 cm3 aspirated twelve-cylinder that delivers 770 CV at 8,500 rpm and develops 720 Nm of torque at 6,750 rpm. It is managed through the optimized seven-speed Independent Shifting Rod (ISR) gearbox. The power is discharged to the ground by the four-wheel drive system with central electronic differential, and the Pirelli PZero Corsa tires are mounted on single-nut aluminum rims, 20 inches in front and 21 inches at the rear.

Giorgio Sanna, Head of Lamborghini Motorsport, commented, “The SC20 is one more technical and styling exercise that associates Squadra Corse experience with Lamborghini design, masterfully interpreted by our Centro Stile based on the customer’s wishes, which was the focus of the project during the entire vehicle development and construction process.”

BB Their Natural Beauty Back BRINGING MOMS

razilian Doctor Marcos Ikeda, also known as "Mom's doc" is more than just a remarkable plastic surgeon, he is a real artist, with the ability to build curves and sculpt muscles, especially to moms who have lost their figure after having children, giving them back a superior self-esteem, self-confidence, security and love for their own bodies. "My passion is to make my patients feel better and more beautiful every day, committing myself to continuously strive for excellence to provide them with the best results and the best care."

Dr. Marcos Ikeda is a board-certified gynecology surgeon who specializes in aesthetic medicine, cosmetic surgery, and aesthetic plastic gynecology surgery. “I always seek to reach the highest outcome and create bonds of trust with my patients; I am a simpathetic surgeon and very close to my patients, focused on achieving the best aesthetic results."

In addition to his dedication to aesthetics, Dr. Marcos is also a distinguished professional in gynecology, with a long history of bringing more than 5,000 babies to the world. "It is a rewarding event to bring a newborn into the world and see what a woman's body can accomplish, but it is even more rewarding to help my patients bring their bodies to their original aesthetic beauty."

Triglycerides:

Why do they matter?

Triglycerides are an important measure of heart health. Here's why triglycerides matter — and what to do if your triglycerides are too high.

If you've been keeping an eye on your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, there's something else you might need to monitor: your triglycerides. Having a high level of triglycerides, a type of fat (lipid) in your blood, can increase your risk of heart disease.

However, the same lifestyle choices that promote overall health can help lower your triglycerides, too.

What are triglycerides?

Triglycerides are a type of fat (lipid) found in your blood. When you eat, your body converts any calories it doesn't need to use right away into triglycerides. The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells. Later, hormones release triglycerides for energy between meals. If you regularly eat more calories than you burn, particularly "easy" calories like carbohydrates and fats, you may have high triglycerides (hypertriglyceridemia).

What's considered normal?

A simple blood test can reveal whether your triglycerides fall into a healthy range.

Normal — Less than 150 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or less than 1.7 millimoles per liter (mmol/L)

Borderline high — 150 to 199 mg/dL (1.8 to 2.2 mmol/L)

High — 200 to 499 mg/dL (2.3 to 5.6 mmol/L)

Very high — 500 mg/dL or above (5.7 mmol/L or above)

Your doctor will usually check for high triglycerides as part of a cholesterol test (sometimes called a lipid panel or lipid profile). You'll have to fast for nine to 12 hours before blood can be drawn for an accurate triglyceride measurement.

We offer a custom tailored, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy ideal for women, useful for achieving a variety of goals and treating conditions caused by an imbalance of or change in hormones, such as menopause. Our one-visit procedure uses bioidentical hormones, meaning they are 100% identical to the hormones your body naturally makes, releasing them at a steady rate over 4-6 months, and avoiding the "rollercoaster" effects of injections.

BEAUTY & WELLNESS

What's the difference between triglycerides and cholesterol?

Triglycerides and cholesterol are separate types of lipids that circulate in your blood. Triglycerides store unused calories and provide your body with energy, and cholesterol is used to build cells and certain hormones. Because triglycerides and cholesterol can't dissolve in blood, they circulate throughout your body with the help of proteins that transport the lipids (lipoproteins).

Why do high triglycerides matter?

Although it's unclear how, high triglycerides may contribute to hardening of the arteries or thickening of the artery walls (atherosclerosis) — which increases the risk of stroke, heart attack and heart disease. Extremely high triglycerides — for example, levels above 1000 mg/dL (11.29 mmol/L) — can also cause acute pancreatitis.

High triglycerides are often a sign of other conditions that increase the risk of heart disease and stroke as well, including obesity and metabolic syndrome — a cluster of conditions that includes too much fat around the waist, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, high blood sugar and abnormal cholesterol levels.

Sometimes high triglycerides are a sign of poorly controlled type 2 diabetes, low levels of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism), liver or kidney disease, or rare genetic conditions that affect how your body converts fat to energy. High triglycerides could also be a side effect of taking medications such as beta blockers, birth control pills, diuretics or steroids.

What's the best way to lower triglycerides?

Healthy lifestyle choices are key:

Lose weight. If you're overweight, losing 5 to 10 pounds can help lower your triglycerides. Motivate yourself by focusing on the benefits of losing weight, such as more energy and improved health.

Cut back on calories. Remember that extra calories are converted to triglycerides and stored as fat. Reducing your calories will reduce triglycerides.

Avoid sugary and refined foods. Simple carbohydrates, such as sugar and foods made with white flour, can increase triglycerides.

Choose healthier fats. Trade saturated fat found in meats for healthier monounsaturated fat found in plants, such as olive, peanut and canola oils. Substitute fish high in omega-3 fatty acids — such as mackerel and salmon — for red meat.

Limit how much alcohol you drink. Alcohol is high in calories and sugar and has a particularly potent effect on triglycerides. Even small amounts of alcohol can raise triglyceride levels.

Exercise regularly. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most or all days of the week. Regular exercise can lower triglycerides and boost "good" cholesterol. Take a brisk daily walk, swim laps or join an exercise group. If you don't have time to exercise for 30 minutes, try squeezing it in 10 minutes at a time. Take a short walk, climb the stairs at work, or try some situps or pushups as you watch television.

What about medication?

If healthy lifestyle changes aren't enough to control high triglycerides, your doctor might recommend some of the following:

Statins. Your doctor might prescribe these cholesterol-lowering drugs if you also have low high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or "good") cholesterol; high low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad") cholesterol; or if you have a history of blocked arteries or diabetes. Examples include atorvastatin (Lipitor) and simvastatin (Zocor). Muscle pain is a potential side effect.

Fish oils. Also known as omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil supplements can help lower your triglycerides. High doses are needed, however, so this option is often reserved for people who have triglyceride levels over 500 mg/dL (5.7 mmol/L).

Fibrates. Fibrate medications, such as fenofibrate (TriCor, Fenoglide, others) and gemfibrozil (Lopid), also can lower your triglyceride levels. Fibrates seem to work best in people who have triglyceride levels over 500 mg/dL (5.7 mmol/L). Fibrates may increase the risk of side effects when taken together with statins.

Niacin. Niacin, sometimes called nicotinic acid, can lower your triglycerides and your "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, cholesterol). It's typically reserved for people who have triglyceride levels over 500 mg/ dL (5.7 mmol/L). Don't take over-the-counter niacin without talking to your doctor first. Niacin can interact with other medications and can cause significant side effects.

If your doctor prescribes medication to lower your triglycerides, take the medication as prescribed. And remember the significance of the healthy lifestyle changes you've made. Medications can help — but lifestyle matters, too.

Zones BLUE

and the way we eat

Hello Houston! It is my privilege to write for LUXCIOR from Loma Linda, California - the only "Blue Zone" in the United States. You may want to ask me: "What is a Blue Zone?"

A Blue Zone is where you find groups of people who live much longer than average, many of them over 100 years.

There are five Blue Zones in the world: Loma Linda, California; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Sardinia, Italy; Icaria, Greece; and Okinawa, Japan. People in these communities are living in good health well into their 90s and 100s! Amazing!

Back in 2005 CNN and many other networks reported on a study National Geographic conducted on what they called "Centennials", identifying three of the currently five Blue Zones: Loma Linda and Seventh-day Adventists, Sardinia, and Okinawa. The other two have been added since then.

Keity Hodgson Ayerdis, MPH, RD

Now, how can one live healthy into their 80s, 90s, or even 100s? If you are interested in learning a bit more, keep on reading because today I am sharing some health and nutrition tips that can improve your health and, quite possibly, add more years to your life.

As we are discussing nutrition, it’s important to first know what the food groups are: The food groups include:

If you’re reading this on your lunch break, take a moment to really look at your plate of food -- or if you’re at home, think of what you usually serve yourself at dinnertime with your family. What does your plate look like? What food group takes up the largest portion?

In a typical North American diet, it is common for half of the plate to be protein, and the other to be grains (starches). Though this may be a typical American diet, it certainly does not mean that it is a healthy one. In fact, the MyPlate recommendations are that half of your plate be vegetables, greens, and some fruit (more vegetables than fruit) and the rest of the plate for protein and starches. That is, one quarter of the plate for protein foods, and the other quarter for grains / starches.

Now that we know our food groups and how they should look on our plate, let's talk a little about the types of food and their preparation:

1. Vegetables, greens, and fruits carry many nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. Whenever possible, buy your produce fresh; frozen is also a good option. If you’re unable to buy fresh or frozen, look for canned vegetables or fruit that say as “Low Sodium”, “No Salt Added”, or “No Added Sugar”

2. Buy unprocessed grains. The less processed the grain, the more nutrients and fiber they contain. Look for brown rice, whole wheat bread, and whole grain products

3. For your protein, if you eat meat, choose lean meats. Other sources of protein can be fish, eggs, and cheese. Plant foods are also a good source of protein -- legumes (beans, lentils, chickpeas), nuts, soy (for example tofu), and seeds

4. When preparing foods, use cooking methods that utilize little to no added fats such as baking, broiling, steaming, etc. If cooking with fats, use vegetable oils such as olive oil or safflower oil

5. Dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt) are recommended as a source of Calcium and Vitamin D, however, they are not a necessary part of your diet. If you do consume dairy products, choose low fat or fat free options. Calcium can also be found in a variety of plant foods and many other foods are fortified with Vitamin D

My dear Houstonians, I hope this information inspires you to make healthy changes to your diet. Care for your bodies be vigilant of what you let into your bodies. Each one of you is special, your body is special, and there is no replacement.

Until next time, take care and God bless you!

WEIGHT LOSS

The secret to success: SET REALISTIC GOALS

"When you're designing your weight management plan, do an inventory of your strengths, such as 'I eat plenty of vegetables.' Recognize and rely on these strengths. This will give you confidence and help you carry out your plan."

One of the most important ways to succeed at weight control is to establish realistic goals and expectations.

You might have a combination of goals: your weight-loss goal, your health goals, your exercise goals or your daily servings and calorie goals. Goal setting keeps you motivated and helps you stick with your program, so it's important to approach it with a thoughtful plan.

The key is to make your goals your own. The more aligned they are with your likes and dislikes — your preferences and priorities — the greater your chances of success. So while yes, the sky is the limit, it's important to set goals that you can reach and that suit your lifestyle. You can always reassess goals and set more challenging ones as you go along.

START WITH OUTCOME GOALS

An outcome goal is longer term and focuses on the end result. Examples include, "I would like to lose 20 pounds" or "I would like to weigh 125 pounds."

Outcome goals:

• Guide your planning

• Build the framework for shorter term, or “process goals”

• Stretch and inspire you

MOVE AHEAD WITH PROCESS GOALS

Process goals focus on a specific process or action — such as "I will walk 30 minutes every day" or "I will eat four servings of vegetables each day" — rather than a single outcome. Many people find that when they focus on process goals, the outcomes (such as weight loss) take care of themselves.

Process goals:

• Build success one small step at a time

• Help you reach your outcome goals

• Are the most important type of goal for many people

STAY INSPIRED WITH DAILY GOALS

Each day, it's important to set goals for both meal servings and physical activity.

It's also important to set one inspirational goal, such as, "Today I will stop eating before I feel full" or "Today I will focus on positive thinking."

Daily goals:

• Are the building blocks for weight loss and good health

• Provide a daily sense of achievement

• Keep you motivated to keep up with your program

INCLUDE ENJOYMENT IN YOUR GOALS

When setting goals, don't forget satisfaction. A study of individuals who maintained their weight after completing a weight-loss program found that satisfaction with the amount and quality of daily activities was an important factor in success.

REMEMBER ...

Make a commitment and don't look too far ahead. What can you do today to make this healthy-living plan work for you?

Greater Houston's Luxury Guide

Tu Guía de Lujo durante tu visita a Houston

We’ve reinvented the way people think about supercar ownership and replaced it with a whole new concept. You’re no longer shackled with single-car ownership because now you can have them all for less than the cost of owning a single car.

Choose a Lamborghini for a cruise through Uptown A Ferrari for a trip to the beach, or a McLaren for a quick blast through the skyscrapers.

The choice is yours!
