THE RED MARBLE QUARRY L E VA N TO (G E ), I TA LY

The survey showed the strong value of the natural element. The area is characterized by different heights, which recall the unevenness of the quarry. The buildings are inserted into the surrounding environment so they seem encased in a big hug from the natural conformation of the site. The planning provides the basic idea as the creation of non-invasive architecture that has its roots in the natural environment. The project incorporates the hardness of not worked marble, based on reinforced concrete structures, and these structures are also settle spontaneously in the context thanks to rude grain, accompanied by wood used as cladding. The project is designed for cultural activities and free time, with an open-air theater and a rock face for climbing with an outbuilding shop for equipment rental and a dressing room. The project includes sport activities and refreshment facilities, such as a hostel, a bar and a restaurant on two levels, for turists on the way to ‘Cinque terre’. In addition a museum was designed to promote the special features of the quarry, with photos and examples of extraction methods of the stone material.

RECYCLING OF THE R A I LWAY M I L A N O, I TA LY

With this project I wanted to redevelop the area of Porta Genova station in Milan, trying to blend architecture with the landscape. The project is distinguished by three large glass lenses and five windows that rise directly from the ground. Through the building, visitors experience a fusion of light, art, architecture and landscape, with views from one level to another and from inside to outside.

The first of the three lenses is a bright and transparent lobby that leads directly to the changing room and to the glass rooms destined for dance, and illuminated thanks to the cuts on the ceiling. In the second lens we find a cafĂŠ with an outdoor seating area, connected directly with a restaurant located in the basement. In the third lens, which is accessed through a wide ramp that takes you to the -2nd floor, there is a box office for tickets. Thanks to a connecting ramp it is possible to reach the -4th floor, where a large open space accommodates a library and a meeting room.

During the day the lenses of translucent glass allow natural light to enter the building, whereas at night the external paths are illuminated by the inside light.

ARCHES

OF

THE FORMER R A I LWAY L E VA N TO (G E ), I TA LY

The project is developed in a historical place in the town of Levanto, the arches of the former railway line near Staglieno square are now used for automotive transit. The redevelopment aimed at the creation of temporary structures that can be quickly converted to a function linked to the seasons.

The area of the arches is used as a commercial area, with craft shops of various kinds, and a bar. The upper zone is resubmitted as a pedestrian area, and has a promenade with several points of aggregation with seating from which it is possible to see the sea, and there are two ‘telescopes’ with a restaurant and a club. To solve the problem of vehicular traffic on the axis connecting the center with the waterfront, a tunnel has been studied in order to clear the square. The intervention on the square was aligned with the preexisting lodge. The structure is designed as a single slab with green and wood stripes inserted in the paving stone, and it is equipped with benches and trees. The gradients are smoothed with the pavement so as to eliminate architectural barriers and make the entire urban

I M AG I N AT I O N REFINERY ISLE OF WIGHT, UK

Thinking obout ftexibility I have designed the perimeter walls and I have kept three old walls, which suppot the ceiling. Everything else ought to be as free as possible. I have just designed the kitchen end the bathroom as fixed rooms, and the remaining space as variable dwelling space, so that they will be able to subdivide these spaces occording to the needs of the occupant. Using moving and rotational partitions it is possible to turn a room into another space at the same time. The mobile wall moves not by sliding it sideways but pulling towards the individual. In this way, the space is divided into two different areas. The sliding portitions can move freely from side to side. Mounted on a ceiling rail, the wooden storage blocks can be moved along one side of the apartment. The ceiling acquire significance in relation to its pattern. Alongside all the ceiling it is developed a fabric with the pattern of the city. A similar methods is used to separate others rooms, mobile walls on wheels open ninety degrees in order to obtain on open plan or a second room. The size of the rooms may vary in proportion with the number of the users. This walls functioning as seporotors may be further used as furniture with multi-functioning fixtures attached to their surface.

The idea is developed in the town of Vigevano. Two characteristic buildings of the town (the tower and the cathedral) are evoked by inserting their skyline in an electrocardiogram that recalls the beating of the heart and so the love for the town: VIGEVANO I LOVE YOU.

The concept starts from the position of the building which is situated next to a small airport. The logo wants to recall a place with an old but elegant style.
