Winter more brutal for asthma and allergy sufferers (NewsUSA) As the winter months drag on, cabin fever sets in for many people. However, being cooped up inside is even harder for people suffering from asthma and allergies because more time indoors means greater exposure to indoor allergens. Although mold, pet dander and dust mites are often blamed for sneezing and itchy eyes this time of year, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) warns that winter pests such as cockroaches and rodents can

also be common asthma and allergy triggers. "The saliva, urine and fecal droppings from cockroaches and rodents contain allergen proteins known to elicit allergic reactions and asthma attacks," said Dr. Jorge Parada, medical advisor for the NPMA. "During the winter months, cockroaches and rodents seek shelter from the elements inside homes, thereby increasing allergic reactions among those people who suffer from allergies and asthma." According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America

(AAFA), cockroach allergens are present in 63 percent of American homes, and mouse allergens in 82 percent. Moreover, the number of homes containing cockroach allergens increases to as many as 78 to 98 percent in urban areas. "It's important for a person suffering from allergy or asthma symptoms to see his or her doctor. A medical professional will be able to test for a cockroach allergy, as well as other common allergens," Parada advised. "Although there is no cure for asthma,

asthma can be controlled through medical treatment and management of environmental triggers. A doctor may recommend the use of antihistamines and decongestant medications to manage symptoms, and may also prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication and bronchodilators." The NPMA recommends the following tips to help keep allergycausing pests out: *Seal cracks and holes around the outside of the home, including utility pipes. *Properly ventilate basements and

crawl spaces to prevent moisture buildup. *Keep counters free of crumbs, and vacuum floors often to reduce the accumulation of allergens. *Keep garbage in a sealed container, and dispose of it regularly. *Pay extra attention to kitchens and bathrooms -- especially under appliances and sinks --

as these areas are par-

ticularly vulnerable to cockroach infestations. For more information about health risks of pests and to find a pest professional in your neighborhood, visit www.pestworld.org.

You think you know snow? Follow these safe driving tips (NewsUSA) Winter comes with a unique set of challenges, including lower air temperatures, lack of visibility, fewer daylight hours, falling snow and, of course, icy roads. These can certainly make for some hazardous driving conditions, which is why experts say you should dig out your ice scraper, gloves and snow shovels before hitting the road. "Don't set off like a tank commander with a tiny hole cleared," says Andy Smith, a patrolman in Canada. The safest way to prepare for winter driving is to be proactive before an emergency occurs. The following tips will give you some ideas on how to drive safely all winter long: *Surface Conditions. Roads and drive paths are likely to be covered with rain, sleet, snow and ice, which causes slippery driving conditions and reduces tire traction. Consider using snow tires in areas where winter weather is severe. It's also important to inspect your tires for uneven wear, cupping and proper tread depth. Also consider the last time you had the tires rotated, balanced and aligned. *Emergency Situations. Winter

weather increases the chance of getting into a car accident. Pack an emergency kit to leave in your vehicle at all times. Consider including safety items such as flares, medical supplies, jumper cables, a flash light, batteries, a small shovel and tire chains. Also consider comfort items like blankets, gloves and snacks. *Clear Vision. Snow, ice and fog diminish your visibility, creating dangerous driving conditions. Remove all debris from your windshield, windows and outside mirrors before driving. Replace your wiper blades with extreme-weather blades for a stronger wipe to battle heavy rain, snow and ice buildup. The TRICO Ice wiper blade (www.tricoproducts.com) is designed to distribute even pressure for a

clearer wipe, while the contour complements new vehicle models and maximizes your line of sight. *Vehicle Performance. Follow the recommended maintenance schedule in your vehicle's owner's manual to avoid hard starts, stalling and lost power during colder weather. Keep your gas tank above the halfway mark because empty tanks collect condensation, which damages the engine. Some regions experience heavy snow and dangerous ice storms, others find an increase in rainy conditions, and in some places, temperatures may just cool down a bit. Regardless of location, the winter season brings a climate change that all drivers should consider.

Smart cookie By the Relish editors ‘Tis the season for baking cookies. To give you a hand, here are some easy tips for stellar cookies and a perfect iced cookie that Santa and his elves will love. •Use self-rising flour, which includes the leavening and salt in the correct proportions. •Use a dry measuring cup (plastic or metal with straight sides) for measuring the flour. You could end up with too much flour if you use a liquid measuring cup (often glass or plastic, with sloping sides and a spout). •Make sure your ingredients are room temperature •Don’t “fluff” the creamed butter and sugar. This adds too much air to the dough. Beat just until smooth. •Don’t overbeat the dough once the flour is added. Beat just until the flour is incorporated into the mixture. •For extra rise and body, refrigerate the dough until chilled before scooping onto baking sheets. •Use an insulated baking sheet. •Use a small or medium scoop to measure out the dough. •Don’t cram extra cookies on the baking sheet. Each standard size pan should hold about a dozen. Aim for 2 inches of space between cook-

ies. •Remove cookies from the oven just before they look done. A light tan cookie is more pliable than a golden one. •A metal cake spatula is better than a sticky rubber one for removing cookies from the pan. •Let cookies cool completely before storing in an airtight container.

1. Preheat oven to 350F. 2. Combine butter, sugars, eggs, flavoring and salt and beat until just combined. Add flours, 1 cup at a time. If dough is sticky to the touch, add more self-rising flour in 1/4 cup increments until smooth. Stir in walnuts. 3. Scoop onto insulated baking sheet one dozen at a time. Bake in center of oven 10 to 13 minutes, until
