Essential elements of every fairy tale are a treasure as well as a bit of mystery. This is the case of the most beautiful Polish castle Książ. This castle is known under the German name Schloss Fürstenstein. It has much in common with the Czech history since it was build under Bolko I the Strict in the near of the Broumov Promontory after the king Ottokar II of Bohemia destroyed the original fortification. The castle was even owned by the king Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia for some time. Later on, Hussites occupied the castle. The original appearance of the castle was transformed during the reign of the Hochberg family who owned it for 431 years until the 1940s when the castle was seized by the Nazi government. In that time, one of most interesting as well as darkest chapters of the castle’s history began. Already in the 1941, the SS, with Heinrich Himmler in the lead who was obsessed with mystique and occult science, started paying attention to the castle. Till this day, it’s not known what the Nazis wanted to do with the castle because everything was top secret and the majority of documentation outlasted the war. Building works on Książ as well as in surrounding woods were done at the highest secrecy

and under the strict supervision of the SS members. In the Owl Mountains, they started building a complex of fifteen underground forts which were to be connected with each other as well as with the castle by various tunnels. The project’s code name was Riese and the majority of historians assume that it should had been factories producing top secret guns. But there are even more interesting speculations suggesting Książ should had been Hitler’s central office for waging the war on the Eastern Front for case the war’s development turns over. This is in accordance with forted bunkers dug out in the rock under the castle. Mostly prisoners of concentration camps dug the rough granite bedrock, nevertheless, repeated epidemics of typhoid slowed work on the complex significantly. The project Riese must have had the highest priority since people we working here till the last days of the war. According to data focusing on the amount of mined rock, not all underground spaces in the area were discovered. Many adventurers believe that this is the location of a treasure most wanted in the present – the Amber Room. The Germans took this from the interim hiding place in Kaliningrad we don’t know where.
