GRATITUDE & STEWARDSHIP Fall 2009

Dear Parents, Alumni & Friends: Two simple words come to mind as this report goes to print: gratitude and stewardship. On behalf of our students, their families, and our community, we thank you. We have so much to be thankful for and it always seems to come back to the fact that the Marquette Catholic High School community is blessed by the presence of so many caring, selfless, and inspired people. People like the ones listed within the pages of this annual report whose actions, undertaken without the expectation of recognition, make it possible for Marquette Catholic High School to pursue great things. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for your ongoing commitment to and affirmation of the mission of our school. We are blessed to have so many in our community who understand stewardship and share the belief that all we have are gifts from God. Thank you for giving back through your gifts of time, talent and treasure to Marquette Catholic High School. Your generosity ensures that our students continue to develop lifelong friendships, reach new heights in academic achievement and flourish in their personal faith experiences. I also encourage those of you who have not recently made a financial contribution to Marquette Catholic High School, to consider doing so. It is with the support of our extended Marquette Catholic family that we will be able to provide an even better opportunity for our students to succeed in their future careers and endeavors. Again, on behalf of all of us, thank you for what you have done in the past for Marquette Catholic High School, and we look forward to your continued support in the future. Best Regards,

Daryl D. Pomranke Chairman, Board of Trustees Parent ‘08 & ‘11 Marquette Catholic High School www.marquette-hs.org

PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING Fall 2009 Dear Marquette Family: I am filled with a sense of gratitude to you for helping us realize so many accomplishments and dreams here at Marquette Catholic High School. I am pleased that we continue our quest to advance our school mission of “promoting academic excellence rooted in Gospel values.” We are strengthened by your generous assistance, the constant support of our Bishop, the Most Reverend Dale Melczek, our Superintendent, Dr. Barbara O’Block, our Board of Trustees and the dedicated commitment of a fine faculty and staff with whom I am privileged to work. Marquette Catholic High School continues to offer a challenging and stimulating academic program within the context of the Catholic faith tradition. Daily prayer, weekly participation at Mass, and involvement in community service foster spiritual growth and a genuine concern for others within our students. Last year our students raised thousands of dollars for charitable organizations and weekly served dinner at the Men’s Homeless Shelter in Michigan City. Heightening students’ awareness of the needs of those less fortunate – our brothers and sisters in Christ – will continue to be an integral part of the Marquette Catholic tradition. The strength and excellence of our academic program lies in the exceptionally competent and talented group of professional men and women who use excellent resources and instructional materials to enhance learning. We continue to make progress in the area of instructional technology, thanks to the generous support from The Dr. Scholl Foundation, The Michigan City Community Enrichment Corporation, Sweney Electric and Mr. Chris ’74 & Mrs. Susan Timm. In the past year, through the work of our technology coordinator, Mr. Waylon Janowiak ’09, we substantially upgraded our computing equipment and network services. Upgrades are evident in our school’s computer lab, which is in constant use by our students during the school days. Exciting new WhiteBoard Technology was also made possible this year. In closing, I would like to thank you for your generosity and support to our school over the years. I feel confident that the spiritual and academic tradition of Marquette Catholic High School, started 124 years ago, will continue to flourish well into the future. May God continue to guide Marquette Catholic as it enthusiastically continues to share the joy of the Gospel.

WAYS TO GIVE WAYS TO GIVE Every gift made to Marquette Catholic High School is vital to the advancement of the school. Giving supports our efforts to develop and maintain a challenging curriculum as well as the essential elements of the Marquette tradition that “challenge our students academically, deepen their faith, and thus enable them to responsibly serve their families, civic and church communities.” As you consider your financial and estate planning, we hope that you will also consider a planned gift to the Marquette Foundation. Not only can we put your gifts to good use, but you can save tax dollars through the charitable deduction and reduction, or avoidance, of capital gains, estate and inheritance taxes.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER ANNUITY TRUSTS AND UNITRUSTS After the life income payments to you and/ or designated beneficiaries terminate, The Marquette Foundation receives the remainder of the assets in the trust. This allows you to make a substantial gift to the school and still continue to receive income from the assets contributed.

BEQUESTS A bequest to The Marquette Foundation is another method of saving significant tax dollars. By naming the Marquette Foundation in your will, you will help Marquette Catholic High School plan for the future and allow us to recognize you today in The Legacy Society.

Have you considered these ways to both give and save?

GIFTS OF LIFE INSURANCE

CASH GIFTS

Gifts of Life Insurance can provide a significant charitable deduction, and by designating the Foundation as its owner and beneficiary, both benefit from the arrangement.

Cash gifts are deductible for income tax purposes to the full extent of the law and in addition to cash, may be made by check or credit card. A pledge payment schedule may be arranged through the Advancement Office.

STOCKS OR SECURITIES A gift of appreciated stock generally offers a two-fold tax savings; avoiding capital gains tax on the increase in value of the stock and providing an income tax deduction for the full market value of the stock and the time of the gift. Please contact Jennifer Quinlan, Director of Advancement, for further information and instruction in donating securities.

MATCHING GIFT SUPPORT Your employer may provide matching gift support, which may double, or even triple your gift. Inquire at your employer’s Office of Human Resources.

REAL ESTATE Real estate, such as a home, vacation home, farm, or acreage may have so appreciated in value throughout the years that its sale would mean a sizeable capital gains tax. By making a gift of such property, you would avoid the capital gains tax and at the same time receive a charitable deduction for the full market value. It is also possible to make a gift of a home, vacation home, etc., so that you and your spouse can continue to use it for your lifetime while you receive a current income tax deduction. Your financial advisor can best direct you to the benefits of “Retained Life Use.”

For more information about giving to Marquette Catholic High School and The Marquette Foundation please contact Marquette’s Advancement Office at 219.873.1325, ext. 229 or jquinlan@marquette-hs.org. 14

ALUMNI

CLASS OF 1978 Patricia Dolezal - Class of ‘78

On August 2, 2008, Mother Nature blessed the Marquette High School Class of 1978 with a beautiful evening for a 30th reunion! After a few humorous moments were spent comparing hair lines, waist lines and wrinkles the festivities began with an interesting tour of the high school and gym conducted by Linda Milzarek. The alums on the tour were so pleased to see how far the school had come! Following the tour, the alums attended Mass at St. Mary’s Church celebrated by Fr. McGrogan. At the Mass, there was another (St. Mary’s High School) Class celebrating their 55th reunion! They all looked wonderful. After Mass, a class photo was taken at the Millennium Fountain in Washington Park. The evening ending with a delicious meal at Galveston Restaurant where the 11 alums and guests shared lots of laughs, stories and wonderful memories. Those that were attending a reunion for the first time, wondered why they waited so long and were already looking forward to when next we meet!

Standing (l to r): Ed Timm, Colleen McElwee Ulam, Pat Dolezal, Lori Schroeder Cusick, Mary Wentland Carr, Andy Groen. Sitting (l to r): Colleen Battle Leyden, Pat McDonald, Roger Smith. Also in attendance but not photographed were: Genny Meyer Koehler and Don Koehler.

ALUMNI MORE THAN NUMBER 1 Reprinted with permission from The News Dispatch

She’s a hometown girl. She was valedictorian of the Marquette High School Class of 2005 and now Courtney Parry is the 2009 valedictorian of St. Mary’s College at Notre Dame, Ind. She not only ranked top in her class, but she did it in two of the toughest academic disciplines, majoring in economics and math. To Parry, math is more than numbers. “I chose math as a major because math is a tremendously fascinating academic discipline,” Parry said. “From chemistry to music, from philosophy to engineering, mathematics is a ‘common denominator’ among almost all different academic disciplines in some form or another,” she said. “Similarly, mathematics is unique because it unites diverse peoples and transcends cultural barriers. Though it might not sound the same in every language, the expression of ‘two plus two’ has the same fundamental meaning on every continent.” She chose St. Mary’s because she was looking for a school offering a well-rounded education in the liberal arts tradition. “I have always had many diverse academic interests, and the liberal arts tradition appealed to my intellectual curiosity. I also embraced the small class sizes and studentprofessor ratio. I feel that St. Mary’s has provided me with a dynamic education and exceptional opportunities for my future.” As a Marquette grad, Parry felt well-prepared “with an excellent basis for my higher education studies.” Because Marquette is a small school, she gained self-confidence as a result of the support she received from the Marquette community. “I cannot even begin to express the gratitude I have for the educators and administrators ... while I was at Marquette,” Parry added. The daughter of Brenda and Jeff Parry, Michigan City, Parry is keeping her options for the future open. “At this time I am not exactly sure what I will be doing after graduation, although I am heavily considering graduate school.” At St. Mary’s Parry is the only student on the college’s board of trustees. She has full voting privileges, and is obligated to keep all proceedings confidential.

ALUMNI BLAZERS GO ABROAD NICOLE FUMO ‘05 DIGS EGYPT Egypt is most widely known for its ancient marvels such as the pyramids, royal mummies and legendary Pharaohnic dynasties. For centuries, archaeologists have toiled to uncover, preserve and understand the minutia of this ancient civilization. One of the most significant, but relatively unknown areas of research concerns the city of Tel’ElAmarna about 200km south of modern Cairo. The ancient city once served as Egypt’s capital and is thought to have been inhabited beginning in 1353BC but for a period of only 50 years. Although, I am not an archaeologist (I graduated from Loyola University Chicago with an undergraduate degree in Forensic Science; which, for the record, has nothing to do with biological archaeology.) I was privileged to be part of the team to investigate the skeletal remains at the Amarna site. My goal was to organize, write and present an original research project overseen by the aforementioned “leading archaeologist” from University at Cambridge in the UK. From my time in Egypt I was able to create a health profile of the juvenile residents of Amarna that showed a greater amount of health and nutritional stress existed there in comparison to other sites in Ancient Egypt.
