High-rise at the end of Mooloolaba Spit is NOT acceptable. I am calling on the State Labor Government to rule this out and to protect our vital marine-based industries and services as well as public space. But we need your support!

Sign the PETITION HERE and join my fight to protect Mooloolaba Spit from high-rise redevelopment and support our vital marine services.

We must preserve this public land for generations to come and get the balance right. The end of Mooloolaba Spit is vital for water police and marine services supporting our fishing industry and boating public. It needs to be protected and improved with increased public open space.

The Mooloolaba Spit Master Plan (2009) was created after broad community consultation which called for this area to be opened up to greater public access. This vital location for the Water Police, Marine Pilots, Maritime Safety Queensland and Boat Harbour Controllers needs to be protected and improved. I am keen to see the old redundant buildings removed and others consolidated with existing marine services maintained as well as an opening up of more public open space where appropriate but not over development or changes that break the height limits in this area and Public land shouldn’t be given away. The current Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme (2014) allows for development in the harbour to a maximum of 8.5m (up to four storeys) but it was revealed that the Department of Transport and Main Roads was investigating putting an integrated tourism focused development on this site which may exceed current height limits, in order to attract private sector investment. I agree with local residents and business owners that we don’t want an increased height limit here and more traffic congestion in an already busy area, which is why I have launched a petition calling on the State Government to rule out high-rise development here and instead remove obsolete buildings, improve the existing maritime related services and open up the balance of the area for more public open space.

SECRETS REVEALED Custodians of our heritage

The State Labor Government was caught out secretly investigating redeveloping the Spit with increased height limits, wasting $62,150 of tax payers money on consultancy fees. As State MP for Maroochydore I slammed the expenditure and secrecy, calling on the government to release the full report and rule out highrise in the area or giving away public land for commercial redevelopment. The end of the Mooloolaba Spit is the people’s land! The people have a right to know what the State Government is up to and that the public interest, the amenity and environment is protected.
