PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Interscholastic sports have always been an integral part of Potomac's scholastic program. About 300 students, girls and boys, participate each year in some manner in sports.

Regardless of which of the wide variety of reasons a student

may be associated with athletics, almost invariably personal growth and benefit will be the outcome.

Our athletes* time, talent and effort provide the remainder of us with many interesting hours as spectators. On behalf of the entire Potomac family, I wish to salute our athletic program. Since sports must be self-supporting, I wish to thank the fans, too, for playing their part in making it all possible.

HISTORY OF POTOMAC HIGH SCHOOL

Once referred to as Rrierfield Farm, the

land on which Potomac now stands was pur chased by the Board of Education to provide a high school campus for this area. It was originally referred to as the Rrierfield

Area School, but the Board subsequently designated the building as Potomac Senior High School in honor of the historic

boundary between Maryland and Virginia, the Potomac River, and the once powerful Indian tribe which lived along its banks. Potomac's first principal was Mr. Wilber Jones, in Sept. 1965. Within a few weeks, Potomac's students, with the help of a faculty and administration, formed a student council, a variety of clubs, a band and a chorus. With the formation of teams in

the various interscholastic sports, school spirit began to manifest itself in the

growing interest and loyalty of the students. That was the year the first yearbook, the POWHATAN, and newspaper, the DRUM BEAT was

published. Oct. 26, 1966, brought Governor J. Millard Tawes from Annapolis for the offical dedication of our school. In June 1967, Mr. Jones retired. Mr. R. Francis Eigehbrode was appointed Principal and Mr. Charles Suhr

The school mascot

became Vice Principal. The 350 students of Potomac's first graduating class received their diplomas in June 1968. In September of that year the new wing was used for the

first time. Since then Potomac has grown to an enrollment of about 1700 students

'and a faculty of 90. The school colors
