Tosh's big talent makes concert seem like party

Elderly director, young cast in harmony for movie Annie

By Gteft Gofe»Smlth When a guy tike Peter Tosh has enough ctout to fill an estimated 2,000 seats at the Centennial Concert Hall as he did last night - it's past time for Winnipeg to take reggae music seriously. f osh is talented enough to do a show which seems almost a throwaway, yet suit have an audience dangling on every note, rewarding him with a rippling series of wild ovations. It was more like a party than a concert. i The man was a towering presence,, but almost a world unto himself. Barely acknowledging the audience, Tosh wrapped his often anguished lyrics in a velvet voice, while ambling around the stage, seeming to have an ear on his own, inner drumbeat. Tosh's band was so accomplished that even complex passages and nuances seemed to roll off easily and naturally. He didn't speak until he'd finished his 10th song. Nor did he have to; fans

HOLLYWOOD (AP) - Tomorrow is almost here for the f&million-plus movie musical Annie, now in its last days of filming. The relief is audible throughout the officialdom of Raster Films and Columbia Pictures. Annie presentedmore than the usual risks: Would John Huston be able to direct his first musical at age 74? (Apparently yes.) Would the film be suspended in midroduction by a directors' strike? Star cast

Peter Tash, Centennial Concert Hall, Sept. 4 ^_

knew every selection, including Tosh Standards like Legalize It and Equal Rights, plus newer tunes like Wanted Dread it Alive and Rastafari Is.

When Tosh did speak, it seemed clear that reggae has inherited the mantle worn by underground music and the counterculture of the 'Ms and '70S. In the tradition of performer as prophet, Tosh claimed an ancient African history for reggae, an art now pressed into service for Jah, the Creator, in this current "Dispensation." Well, wealthy John Lennon used to get away with stuff like "imagine no possessions", so why shouldn't people lap up the gospel according to Peter Tosh? Front act was the talented Danny Pelfrey Band, which looked like it would have been more at home in a recording studio than on stage.

Aileen Qulnn: back to school

Would Aileen Quinn, the 10-year-old chosen to play Annie, outgrow the role during the long filming? "1 only grew an inch and a half," she announces happily. After locations in New York and New Jersey, Annie returned to the Burbank Studios to complete production with the stellar cast: Albert Finney, Carol Burnett, Bernadette Peters, Ann Reinking, Tim Curry, Edward Herrmann and Geoffrey Holder.

Aileen will be returning to her school in Hardley, Pa., and her mother has no concern about how the other students will react to a star in their midst: "Aileen went back to school after the announcement, so the other children got used to the idea. They've been very supportive. 1 think her life at school will be normal." But Aileen added that she'll have plenty of stories to tell about what she did on her summer vacation. "That meant that t sometimes had to learn a part in 40 minutes," she said. It also meant a two-hour train trip to and from Yardley — "and I always got up at seven for school." The future? "I'd like to do more movies," said Aileen. But not Annie 11, she conceded. She'd be too old, On the orphanage set, John Huston sat benignly in his director's chair as aides prepared a final musical number. "This has been an enjoyable experience," said Huston. "These little girls come in every morning and swarm around me like a flight of starlings. Delightful."

Inside their spacious motor home, Aileen Quinn and her mother, Helenann Quinn, expressed different feelings about the film's end, "I'm sorry it's almost over, It's been so much fun. I'm going to miss all the people," Aileen said. "The experience has been hard on some of us," said her mother, explaining that Aileen's father, who works in Pennsylvania, was unable to take much time off to join them during the filming.
