5 Designing skills every designer should possess to become a successful graphic designer The job of a graphic designer sounds very interesting on paper, and it is so in real life. But behind the vivid designs and captivating images and meaningful sketches, there lie a handful of skills that every graphic designer needs to be successful. Being a graphic designer is not easy; being a freelance graphic designer is even tougher. One needs to be at the top of their game at all times and have their skills sharpened to an edge. Here are the essential skills that every graphic designer should posses: 1. Creativity, visual ideation and aesthetic sense In graphic designs, it is not always about the shapes or shades – it is how the whole thing plays out together as a message. These three skills are the basic and probably most important factors to ensure that. To generate the seed of an idea which is creative and communicative, to work on that idea and give it an actual visual shape and then finally executing the concept with the proper aesthetics so that it appeals to the target audience – this forms the very foundation of the job.. Knowledge of software and other technical skills are pointless without these skills to base their work on. 2. Typography and Colour Theory Whether it is a print advertisement, or a social media poster or a packaging design, the importance of typography remains the same. Considered to be the official language of designing, the right typography can make your design, and the wrong one will break it. For the amateurs it is nothing but a set of fonts and arrangements. But for the professionals, it is so much more than that. Kerning, tracking, leading, white space, line height – each skill matters when it comes down to the final result. As for colour theory, it is known that every shade on the palette has its own psychological effect on the viewer. It could be at times personal; but as per the general theory of cognition, each colour sends a distinct message to the brain – green is fresh, natural, youthful, black is dark and intense and so on. Depending on the message of the content, the graphic designer should know to use the colour theory, including the effects of light and shadow to their advantage.

3. Software skills It is kind of a clichéd suggestion – but to have the software skills at the tip of your finger really helps. If you are looking to get hired, know that almost every graphic design agency in London are looking for people fluent in software like Adobe – Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign mostly. While having the creative genes and the ability to create topnotch content makes you inherently a good graphic designer, it will not get you a job in the field if your hands are not good with these software and some more. The combination of concept and application is what makes a designer successful in the professional arena. 4. Web designing skills Knowing web designing is not quintessential for being a good graphic designer, but it is to get the job you want, at the company of your choice. Almost one-third of graphic designing posts require the person to have at least the basic skills of HTML and CSS. You will not be asked to build the whole website with every page from square one – that is not the job you applied for. But let’s be honest, it would really help your chances if you knew how to fix minor web-based graphic issues on your own. Moreover, HTML or CSS or both on your CV documents would really make your portfolio stand out.

5. Communication Graphic designing is not only about the communication of the content. They must keep in mind that their clients are not acquainted with the technical details or the jargons of graphic designing. If a client wants you to make their logo design, and you ask for the Mood Board, they might not know what exactly it is. Being communicative and able to articulate the ideas is an important skill in this field.
