Textile "know-how" and innovation are and In an effort to generate a better understanding of Damart’s super scientific talents Rebecca Thorpe (Range Manager) and Rachel Cuckson (Design Manager) both from the Product Division, travelled to France to meet the man behind the science, Cyril Chaigneau (Research & Development Textile Engineer). When meeting Cyril, Rebecca and Rachel could see it was obvious Cyril’s passion for innovation and development was very clear. Enthusiastically Cyril expressed ‘I’m very keen to share my knowledge of innovative developments within Damart; in order for us promote them throughout the business’.

We have all heard of our innovation products but how much do we actually know? Here’s a quick crash course in Damart’s Innovation! Known as the slimming fibre, helping you slim! Lineastyl is Damart’s brand that can improve your silhouette, but it does a lot more than this. It can benefit your body in a number of ways.......

Slimming:

Lineastyl leggings can help you slim. The fibres contain millions of invisible microcapsules that are rich in invaluable natural extracts (Amazonian tree sap, red algae, horse chestnut, red vine and, for moisturising the upper layers of the skin, soft almond oil). When you move, and on contact with the skin, the fibres release their slimming properties that are effective for up to 20 machine washes. Convincing results show a reduction of up to 2.5cm in thigh size and up to 3.5cm in hip size in 56 days – if worn for at least 8 hours per day. Independently tested.

Moisturising: The moisturising properties (shea butter and soft almond oil) are woven into the fabric in invisible microcapsules are released when wearing them close to your skin. The shea butter melts at body temperature and absorbs rapidly into the skin without leaving a greasy feeling, making your skin feel smoother and firmer.

Refreshes Tired Legs:

Lineastyl specially designed tights can refresh tired legs. The fibres within the tights contain millions of invisible microcapsules that are rich in invaluable natural extracts. Horse chestnut and red vine leaf extracts improve circulation, whilst the cypress oil soothes muscular cramps. The ginger oil also helps muscle pain as well as aiding with circulation and arthritic pain, making your legs feel refreshed and not tired. Lineastyl is available in leggings, tops and tights. One of our best sellers is the Lineastyl leggings - our customers love how they help you slim whilst wearing them!

= Clever Clothing! always will remain in Damart's DNA. Back in 1953 Damart developed and patented ‘Thermolactyl’, a man-made fibre, which has the ability to provide warmth without lots of chunky layers. Not only do our Thermolactyl garments create warmth, they are 100% breathable too! Today, in Damart’s mailings, we see a mix of traditional Thermolactyl thermals and Thermolactyl ready-to-wear, which mixes both fashion with function!

What is Thermolactyl?

Thermolactyl is Damart’s brand of thermal wear – available in vests, long johns, tops and we have recently developed the range to include outer wear such as cardigans, jeans and warmth accessories.

How does Thermolactyl work?

Thermolactyl works by trapping air in millions of tiny pockets within the garment. This air is then regulated between the skin and the cloth of the garment, by forcing perspiration to the outer surface where it evaporates, keeping you dry as well as warm.

5 Grades of Warmth

Thermolactyl products are available in 5 grades of warmth. The 5 grades of Thermolactyl fibres used in our garments determine the level of warmth each will deliver; this allows you to wear the correct thermal whatever the weather and activity. Amortyl is one of our exclusively designed Damart innovations along with Thermolactyl, Lineastyl and Perfect Fit.

What is Amortyl?

Amortyl is Damart’s brand of clever footwear that vastly reduces the amount of vibration you feel as you walk, meaning there is less strain on your knees and hips. Amortyl footwear comes in various fashionable styles – finishing any outfit perfectly.

How does Amortyl work?

Amortyl is an insole that is made from unique materials which absorbs more than 30% of the amount of energy transferred during walking. The insoles cushion your feet making walking easier and less tiring.

Cyril Chaigneau - Research and Development Textile Engineer Cyril is responsible for the development of new functional and technical textiles focusing on thermal comfort especially for warming or cooling effects. Cyril manages the efficiency tests on fabrics with some of the most skilled laboratories in textile and human thermophysiology. With over ten years of technical experience in functional fibre, fabric and finishing. Cyril has an in depth knowledge of the latest worldwide innovations in textile field. If you would like a little more insight into Damart’s innovative ways, check out our website, according to Cyril with all you need to know!

Building on the success of last year’s Autumn-Winter 2011 Look Book,

Justyna Mysior, a recent graduate from the London College of Fashion was asked to style the Spring-Summer 2012 Look Book. Taking her inspiration from the catwalk she has created a series of shots, which focus on this season’s key trends: clashing colours, statement dresses and classic tailoring. In a small studio in South East London, Justyna spent a hectic two days shooting the Look Book. This involved styling the models and making sure their look was just right to get the best shot, to playing around with accessories and ensuring that the Damart clothes were the star of the show.

A massive thank you to Zhaya Holdsworth and Rebecca Thorpe (Product Division) who provided all the samples from the SS12 collection and also to Brent Carr and his team for all their hard work in the final Look Book production stages. The new Look Book and clothes are on display in the 1st floor corridor in the Bingley building.

We interviewed Justyna, the stylist of the new SS12 Look Book What started your interest in Fashion?

My interest in fashion started when I was a child back in my home country of Poland. From an early age, my mother and I would spend a lot of our time recycling, reinventing and updating our old clothes, something I have carried on doing.

How did you end up styling the AW11 and SS12 Look Books?

Originally I won the Damart styling competition on my course and, as a result of that, I was given the opportunity to style the AW11 Look Book. I was absolutely thrilled to be asked by Damart to style the new SS12 Look Book. I wanted to create a specific look that would distinguish Damart from its competitors and appeal to the journalists. I did a lot of research around fashion trends, fabrics and colours etc. and worked these trends into Damart's collection.

How did you find the Damart style project?

Restyling the brand was my first project for a real fashion company. It was very exciting and also made me take much more responsibility for my work, as this time it really mattered. The course project gave me new opportunities to be creative and create my own vision for Damart's clothes, an opportunity we rarely get as students.

What other fashion projects are you working on at the moment?

I'm currently involved with the Fashion Culture programme - a fashion project linking English and Polish fashion designers. I'm also in the middle of creating my own fashion blog and magazine which should be live later this spring. So all in all it's a very exciting time for me at the moment.

What trends should we be buying into for SS12?

The new colour direction this season is light pastels and candy colours, think baby pink, sky blue and soft yellow. The most desirable looks for the summer are retro, nautical, tribal and sporty. I think the new SS12 Damart Look Book covers these trends perfectly, I hope you agree. Justyna (pictured right) said: "I'd like to say a massive thank you to the Damart team for sorting out all the samples for me. I know it was a lot of work co-ordinating everything and you were all magnificent."

3MC Multi Market, Multi Channel

Over 2011 the Product Division attended ICM (Integrated Change Management) workshops. Coming away with great new tools, the team put their cards on the table and asked themselves “How can we change our ways of working/mindset to be a Multi Market Multi Channel focused business rather than Traditional UK Mail Order” and “How can we become more flexible and reactive so we can give our current and future customers what they want, when they want it, however they choose to shop!” The first challenge was simplifying the task by breaking it down into key process areas, then created five teams:

HEALTHY HEART CAMPAIGN Spring is upon us and the Healthy Heart team has been busy with lots of new and exciting initiatives around the business. You may have noticed the new magazine reading areas in the canteens which have been created to help you relax during your break times. It’s believed that taking time out can help you work smarter, clearer and can even lower your blood pressure, so why not take some time to relax and read during your break times.

The Great North Runners (picture right) presented a cheque for £5242.33 to Barbara Harpham (Heart Research UK’s National Director) for the money they raised running The Bupa Great North Run. An amazing achievement, well done! March 14th was ‘No Smoking Day’, a day created and dedicated to help people quit smoking. We would love to hear your stories about how you stopped or cut down smoking and share your success to help inspire others on their journey to stop or cut down. Please email your stories to the Healthy Heart team. The London Olympic Games is on the way and we want to make sure Damart does not miss out on the fun by having our very own Damart Olympic Games this summer. We also have 2 Olympic and 2 Paralympic tickets to be won. So Clockwise - Chris Atkien, Phil Myerscough ,Barbara Harpham, Kaye Leathem, Andy Ingham, keep your eyes open for more information to make sure you get the opportunity Damian Northrop, Andy Hill, Dave Smith, Alex Ryan, Jeanette Askin, Diane Smith. to win!. On 22nd April three of our colleagues will be running the London Marathon, all 26 miles! Our runners are Andy Ingham (Team Leader - Customer Service), Phil Myerscough (E-Commerce Manager - Marketing) and Gemma Smith (Team Leader - Customer Service). They have been busy training and have found it a real challenge, but very rewarding and the support they have received from everyone is keeping them going. Gemma said, “Training has been hard, but Andy and I train together, so we keep each other going and, when one of us is struggling, we help each other out. It’s not only the training, our diets have had to change too. Again, this has been painful but rewarding. Knowing that we have such a big support network and that people are donating their hard-earned money to such a great cause gives me the focus and spurs me on.” In the 31 years of the London Marathon it is has raised over £500 million for a multitude of charities and this year our runners have pledged to raise £6,000 for Heart Research UK. The team are doing fantastic work and are really grateful for all your generosity and have raised over £2,000 to date. The team have organised cake sales, open mic nights, a wonky donkey derby, raffles and football cards. With not long left to go, we would like to thank you for all your support and generosity and if you would like to help the team reach their goal why not sponsor them at http://www.justgiving.com/damart-marathon-2012. A big thank you from the team for all your support.

TRAINING WORKSHOPS

Over the last few months the training department have had numerous requests from across the business for training courses, these have ranged from technical, communication skills, organisation and project management skills. As a result the team have designed a series of workshops that aim to equip colleagues that attend ‘with a ‘common set of skills’ and ‘tools’ to support development in their roles and in their teams. Many of the workshops have already been successfully rolled out to some areas of the business already.

ICM (Integrated Change Management) has been delivered to over 70

colleagues from across the business by John Barrett, since its introduction in 2009. An internal programme has been designed to equip colleagues with a ‘common set of skills’ and ‘tools’ that will be developed to support everyone in their leadership roles. The programme has already been rolled out at Logistics and due to the feedback and its success the training team are looking forward to other areas of the business benefiting from the tools and techniques learnt.

COACHING is the practice of supporting an individual through the process of achieving a specific personal or professional result. The workshops aim to help delegates develop a range of skills needed to effectively coach and support the development of others. The workshops cover all areas of coaching providing the skills needed On completion of the course delegates will be able to describe what is meant by coaching in context of their role, describe their strengths and areas for development as coach and use effective questioning and listening techniques.

EXCEL Beginner and Intermediate courses have been developed

to meet the growing skill levels of the business. The Beginner module is aimed at delegates who need to be able to create, edit and format Excel spreadsheets, including creating basic calculations and formulas. Intermediate modules aimed have some experience of using Excel who need to create spreadsheets which include calculations, multiple sheets and charts.

If you or your teams are interested or would like further information on the courses available, please contact Geraldine Vernon (Training Manager) gvernon@damart.com or Helen Taylor (Organisational Development Manager) hltaylor@damart.com in HR.

We reported in December’s edition of TeamSpirit that Damart has recently joined the Institute of Customer Service (ICS). We are pursuing the ‘ServiceMark’ accreditation to ensure our customer service delivery is of the best possible quality and demonstrate that we are all passionate about our customers. To achieve the ICS ServiceMark accreditation, we are required to complete the following this year : - A Customer Survey. This has already been mailed to our customers and the results are currently being collated to understand our customers’ feedback on the quality of our service. - Our Colleague Survey. “Customer Voice…Because Your View Counts” will be launched in 2012. The ICS project team are looking at the best methods for collating your views, to help towards the accreditation. - An Independent Assessment. Site visits will be made by independent Assessors to determine whether Damart is meeting the Service Check (ServCheck) benchmarks, and will look to see if we are implementing any action plans that have been formulated from the customer and colleague surveys. Please remember, YOUR voice does count, so watch this space for further developments and updates!

With nearly 3,000 ‘followers’ on Twitter, 500 ‘likes’ on Facebook, and regular followers of our Damart Blog, our social media presence is growing every second. We’ve had personal thanks and re-tweets on Twitter from celebrities such as footballer, Teddy Sheringham; the Oxo gravy lady, Linda Bellingham; actress, Angela Griffin; singer, Beverley Knight and presenter, Dawn Porter for our thermal gifts that were sent out during the winter months. I would like to have a picture on the intranet, how do I do this? From Sam (Location unknown) This is a great question and yes you can help. Within the call centre we receive a list of all the products we can sell as special offers, from there we plan what items sell well. If you have any ideas on items that may sell well for special offers please see my good friend Nicola French. Keep Special! Alison X

Dear Alison..... Myself and a few of my colleagues are approaching our tenth year at Damart, we were wondering if there was anything in place as recognition for “ten years service” a small gesture would really be appreciated From Kellie Hallahan (Credit Team)

Dear Alison..... Are there any plans to change the computer (PC) browsers from internet explorer 6 to the latest version. Many websites we use no longer support version 6. From Anon I spoke with my good friend Ian Auker from IS, Ian told me, the majority of our users access systems via Citrix. Upgrades within Citrix are relatively easy, however, though many applications today are browser based and we have applications within Damart that require IE8 or above to work. If we upgrade from IE6 there are many current applications that will loose some of their functionality with IE8. We have an active project within IS that is addressing the Citrix issues, including the IE6 upgrade. Warmest regards Alison X

The business is definitely looking in to some form of recognition for all our amazing colleagues who have reached the ten year mark. As soon as there is any news you will be the first to hear. Alison x

If you wish to respond to any of the letters, or would like to write to me then please e-mail me at AskAlison@Damart.com or text me on 07544 026677. Don’t forget to include your name and area, or I cannot select you as a winner.

Dear Alison.....

What do you do in your spare time to relax? From Anon (Location unknown) We have some fantastic items within our shop and also in the Bradley Mill. I love a bargain as much as anyone and after speaking with my dear friend Mary Branks, (Shops Manager) Mary advises me that items are already heavily discounted in the shops and very heavily discounted in the Bradley Mill. Remember the staff sale on Fridays is to make sure that colleagues get the first opportunity to look at all new Bradley Mill stock before it’s opened to the public. Thank you Alison X
