CHAIRMAN’S NOTES KEVIN JONES “I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone involved with Cambrian and Clydach Football BGC, from the supporters, players, sponsors and directors for the coming 2019/20 season following a great performance last year finishing 2nd in the league and having a great cup run. It provided positive exposure for the club and shone a spotlight on the work and commitment of everyone involved in the club. The club now has a firm ethos of how we want to play and this goes a long way in providing on field success that can be attractive to watch, and this philosophy is not only embraced by our senior side but percolates throughout the club including all our academy sides. This is testament to the close working relationship from all the coaching and management staff and is paying dividends throughout the club.

the structure for the club to fulfil it’s potential. On this note a special thanks to everyone who has given up their time to contribute to the recent ground improvements which is an example of the image we want to portray. It just leaves me to personally wish the club the very best for the coming season and there are plenty of reasons to feel positive and to be optimistic for what will be a long season. There will be some inevitable highs and lows , but let’s start with a positive mind set and continue the progress of the club and provide a positive image for the academy players to aspire to. Regards”

Kevin

The board are working behind the scene to ensure the success of the club and a huge debt of gratitude is owed to all the volunteers of the club who will provide

Cambrian & Clydach Vale BGC is a football club nestled in the heart of the Rhondda Valley in small village called Clydach Vale. Formed in 2001, we have grown exponentially since that time and have become arguably the biggest and best football club in RCT. Within a decade we have had numerous successes including winning the Welsh League Division 1 title in 2011/2012, our highest accolade to date. Another huge milestone for the club happened within the decade also, with our Academy being formed in 2008 after the devolution of RCT Schools/Council Football. The Academy was set up with a sole purpose, to provide elite opportunities for young players within RCT. Starting with 1 team, the present day we have grown to 11 teams from u7 to u16s with the brand #CamArmy renowned within football circles all over Wales. Since the Academy’s inception, over 40 players have gone onto professional clubs in that time and over 20 players have since graduated and played senior football in the Welsh League for the club. Our model for player development is second to none and we are the only affiliated FAW Academy in RCT. Through our innovative thinking, we became the first club in RCT to have an artificial 3G pitch in 2013, which has helped propel our brand of football to new levels. We have also been loyal to our routes, keeping grassroots teams playing in the local leagues through our link with the everpresent Boys & Girls Club.

OUR HISTORY

N

CH

The Camarmy

B.G.C.

Cambrian United was formed in 1965, taking its name from the local colliery. After success in the Rhondda & District League, the club was elected to the South Wales Corinthian League in 1972. They won the second division championship at the first attempt and followed up the following season by winning the Corinthian Cup with a 5-2 extra time victory over Cardiff Corries. In season 1977-78 the side were runners up in the first division losing out on goal difference to near neighbours Ton and Gelli. In 1980, the club joined with the very successful Clydach Vale Boys and Girls Club seniors, but the merger was a spectacular failure and almost led to the club losing its Amateur League status after several poor seasons during the decade. The 1990’s saw the rebuilding process begin and the second division title was won for the second time in 1992. In 1994, manager Neil Foulkes joined the club and celebrated by winning the Corinthian cup a season later. In 1996-97, the club had a terrific year winning the FAW Trophy by defeating Rhyl Delta 2-1 at Jenner Park and won a second successive Corinthian Cup beating Cardiff Civil Service 4-2. In addition, they were league runners up to Ely Rangers. There then followed a run of four more runners up spots in six years and another Corinthian Cup triumph, this time by a 4-1 margin against Llantwit Fardre, before the Championship was finally won in 2004/5. In 2000, the club had remerged with the Boys and Girls Club.

Cambrian & Clydach Vale BGC

The club is also very active off the pitch working closely with the local Village Trust to develop facilities in the area. Two full time soccer coaches are employed to work with local schools and major improvements have taken place at the ground. An all weather, floodlit AstroTurf area has been built at a cost of £116,000 and a clubhouse facility opened in October 2005 after the club and the Trust successfully generated the £130,000 required. Floodlighting on the ground was completed at the start of August 2007. The Club entered the Welsh League for the first time in season 2005/06 and a very successful year ended with the Third Division Championship being won after close rivals West End had been deducted three Points. Season 2006/7 turned out to be even more memorable as promotion was gained to the top division of the Welsh League with a second placed finish behind champions Garw. In addition the Youth side won the MacWhirter Cup defeating Pontardawe Town 5-2 in the final as well as finishing runners up in their division. In the 2007/8 season, the clubs first ever in Division One began with an incredible 5 straight wins and although the small squad could not sustain this long term, a creditable ninth place was achieved. The club also embarked on a new venture, taking over and forming the new RCT UEFA Academy programme. This part of the club has gone from strength to strength. This has gone from strength to strength over the past few seasons and the club now runs age groups from 7 through to 19 at elite level. A major change also took place on the Management Committee in 2008, with former England Manager Terry Venables agreeing to become chairman of the club. Terry was already Patron of the highly successful Cambrian Village Trust and has close links with Clydach Vale, where his mother was born. Last season after challenging for the title over the last few seasons Cambrian & Clydach became champions of the Welsh League for the first time in its history.

DANE’S Diary Following on from a tough couple of weeks and some disappointing results it doesn’t get any easier as we welcome STM Sports to the M&P 3G. Although results have been poor the performances certainly haven’t been negative and we have plenty of positives to take from the games. We are still in a positive position and hopefully we can get back to winning ways and climb the table again. Huge credit goes to Nana/Dale all connected to STM who have brought a freshness to this league. They have certainly shown they are not scared of anyone. Todays encounter is going to be a difficult test for us and a game that we must take our chances if we are to get back to winning ways. STM have shown they are full of pace and power and will be buoyed that they will be playing us on a 3G pitch, which is normally our advantage. It’s a time for us all to stick together get back to basics and hopefully pick up 3 points. I hope you enjoy the game.

Academy News – SEPTEMBER 2019 September has been a busy month across all the age groups from Under 8’s to 19’s. We also saw the start of our Under 6s & 7’s programme at Tylorstown Sports Centre on a Friday evening, which has started off brilliantly. 49 games have been played across the 10 age groups with the variety of games providing excellent learning and development opportunities within different contexts and environments for both the players and coaches. Performance Phase… The Cymru League Development squad have started off the season with 2 wins and 2 losses from their opening 4 games with injuries playing a big part in their consistency within the games. Results currently stand at: Cambrian 3-2 Cardiff Met Cambrian 1-2 Barry Town United Carmarthen 2-1 Cambrian Cambrian 7-0 Torfaen With October comes a further 2 league games vs Pontardawe (away) and Penybont

(home). Liam and the boys will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing exit to Ton Pentre in the FAW Youth Cup on penalties. What is pleasing for me is their willingness to give 3 of our current under 16s a chance within the youth environment in such a big game, with one of them starting the match. Of course, my congratulations go to the boys at Ynys Park and we wish them every success as the progress in the competition. Development Phase… The 12s, 14s and 16s are now 3 games into the opening group stage of the FAW Academy Cup with the aim to reach the Super Six competition which begins in November. All three age groups still have a perfect record with 3 wins from 3 after games vs Taffs Well, Cardiff Met and Torfaen Football Academy. To reach the Super Six format teams are required to finish in the top 3 of the current group of 6 to progress. All 3 ages have put themselves in great contention to achieve this once again with 2 games remaining in October vs:

Barry Town United Home – October 20th (16s 10am KO, 14’s 11:45am ko, 12s 5pm ko) Risca United away – October 27th The development age groups (13’s and 15’s) have continued their season of development in readiness to get back into the competitive action next season. This season provides an excellent opportunity for the coaches and players to develop not only individually but as a team. We find it vitally important within our Academy to ensure that the players stay within our environment and provide them with a high-quality games programme that acts as a great foundation to hit the floor running when the FAW Academy Cup will be back for them in September 2020. After the great showing from last seasons 13’s in the competition this season’s 13’s have also been invited by Chelsea FC to participate in the qualifying stage of the Under 13 Cobham Cup. This will take place at the end of October and will provide the 13’s a chance to play against different opposition including English Cat 2 or 3 Academies in a competitive environment. The players and

Match Programme

coaches are thoroughly looking forward to the challenge that awaits them in a months’ time and will be working tirelessly in training and the games leading up to it to prepare. Foundation Phase… It’s been an excellent month for the under 811s which has seen them be involved in a large amount of games alongside the training programme they have. The move to training two nights a week and the different development aspects which are being concentrated on seems to be working very well and has only strengthened our programme, teams and players. Having the games programme alongside this is beneficial to keep providing challenges to the players and coaches and provide good feedback and reflections on how the coaches can keep developing the individual players and their performances within the team setting. Several age groups have played English Academies over the last 2 months and the performances are providing us with more invites to play against them again and other

18

academies which is excellent for all involved in the Academy. This month will see the Foundation Phase age groups play Cheltenham Town and Forest Green to add to the list of clubs thus far and we will hopefully continue to add others as the season progresses and the players keep up their great performances and attitude. Having clubs speak highly of our style of play and willingness to keep to our philosophy and beliefs no matter the score is pleasing to hear and is aiding in growing our academy not only in Wales but England also. Outside of our games programme the under 11’s age group were invited along to the recent Welsh international futsal games vs Estonia which were held at the House of Sport in Cardiff. It was a great experience for the players to have the opportunity to not only watch two international futsal matches but also be given full welsh kit and play futsal around the main games. We would like to give thanks to the FAW for the honour to be involved and reaching out to show the next generation what an exciting sport Futsal is. A huge well done is also in order for Esme Hooper….our queen of the Academy. Esme,

who plays in our under 9s, attended a trial with girls 2 years older than her, and has been successfully selected to train with the Welsh girls regional centre. We have huge hopes for her as she develops and believe she could become our first ever Wales ladies international. September has been an excellent month and we have no doubt October will continue in this manner…….

STM SPORTS A CLUB HISTORY Entered the lowest possible league in Cardiff – The Cardiff Combination Football League Division 3 with players that were largely from Cardiff Cosmos Porto's where the three of us had been previously in the South Wales Amateur League and also players from Willows FC who were a very successful Sunday League side managed by Neil Grant. We had successive promotions through the Cardiff Combination but only one League Title in which we beat a side called RAFA Boys on goal difference to achieve promotion to the South Wales Amateur League Division 3. In our first season 2010/2011 we were crowned Champions and progressed to Division 2.

26

In the following season 2011/2012 we finished 7th and reached the semifinal of the SWFA Senior Cup, beaten in a game with no actual shots on goal but decided by an error. In our second season in Division 2, 2012/2013, we finished 5th but the cup runs took their toll but we were rewarded by winning the South Wales Football Association Senior Cup by beating red hot favourites Rhoose FC 4-2 after extra time – this was a major shock as Rhoose has Paul Giles (ex-Cardiff City) in charge and were paying good money to their players at the time. In our third season in Div 2, 2013/2014, we finished 4th which showed further improvement promotion into Division 1. At then

Cambrian & Clydach Vale BGC

end of this season we chose to move to the brand new 3G facility at Cardiff University and what a great decision this proved to be as it suits the style of passing football we play. In our first season in Div 1, 2014/2015, we finished as Champions and then had to play off against the Champions of the South Wales Senior League, Pontlottyn this was quite invoived because we were initially turned down by the Welsh League because our facilities did not meet their ground criteria, even though they were and still are the best facilities in Cardiff. We appealed and won the appeal and then went on to play Pontlottyn at the Cardiff City Stadium where we won 42 in front of a massive crowd for a playoff game of 496 if I remember correctly.

www.cambrianbgc.co.uk

In our first season in the Welsh League Div 3, 2015/2016 we finished 4th, tremendous achievement. In our second season in the Welsh League Div 3, 2016/2017 we finished runners up to Llantwit Major and were promoted to Welsh League Div 2. In our first season in Welsh League Div 2, 2017/2018 we finished 4th having faded at the end having been at the top for most of the season, injuries to a small squad took their toll sadly. In our second season in Welsh League Div 2, 2018/2019 we were crowned Champions with one game left finally finishing 6 points clear of archrivals Swansea University.

27

Th FAW have completely revamped the structure for 2019/2020 and we are now part of the FAW Championship South after going through an appeal process as the ground again did not meet the new criteria – all is well and we await the start of the new season. Extra Information …. Unsuccessful introduction of an Under 19's Welsh League Team two seasons ago – they finished 6th so when I say unsuccessful it is more that none of the team quite made it to

HOME GROUND – CARDIFF UNIVERSITY PLAYING FIELDS HOME COLOURS – GREEN CURRENT LEAGUE POSITION – 5TH 28

the first team. We decided it was not worth the expense and so did not enter a team last season. What has been successful though was the introduction of the Under 8's the season before last and as Under 9's they have become one of the teams to beat locally which is great news – they have 4 Coaches which is a great thing and far better than most teams they play – Under 10's this season should be very successful. We have also added a successful Under 8’s for this season 2019/2020
