Students have an opportunity to take out a loan in their name; no co-signers or credit checks are needed for this loan. Loan repayment, usually with interest, begins six months after the student graduates, leaves the college or drops below six credits. Students can receive one or both of the following:

(1) Subsidized Need-based - The Federal Government pays the interest on the loan while the student is in school until repayment begins.

(2) Unsubsidized Non-need-based - The student is responsible for paying the interest while in school unless he or she chooses to capitalize the interest. Capitalizing the interest means the student will not make interest payments while in school, but the interest that accumulates will be added to the principal of the loan.

FEDERAL DIRECT PLUS LOAN

This loan is for parents who want to borrow additional funds to help pay for their student’s education. Parents may borrow the cost of attendance minus the financial aid received by the student. Loan repayment, usually with interest, begins 60 days after the last disbursement of the loan. Parents must demonstrate credit worthiness for the PLUS loan.

PRIVATE LOANS

Private loans are designed to help families bridge the gap between direct cost and the financial aid received. The loans vary in interest rates, repayment and conditions. Loan repayment, usually with interest, will begin after the student graduates, leaves the college or drops below six credits.
