CYBERNETICS, the Science of COMMUNICONTROL CAN YOU HAVE :COMMUNICATION WITHOUT CONTROL ? CONTROL WITHOUT COMMUNICATION ?

1.

A SYSTEM consists of ENTITIES

and their RELATIONSHIPS to each other 

 

In a CYBERSYSTEM the most important kind of connecting relationships are: CONTROL relationships. IF entities are close-coupled the control doesn’t need a communication channel. Otherwise CONTROL is mediated through COMMUNICATION CHANNELS 

2.

A SYSTEM is composed of ENTITIES in RELATIONSHIPS

3

MODULATION : – at the source-entity a mass or energy CARRIER is modulated by imposing a pattern on it.

4

The COMMUNICONTROL CHANNEL ď Ž

The carrier carries the pattern through a time and space CHANNEL from the source entity (SENDER) to a RECEIVER entity

5

Receiver Uncertainty Reduction Information (Shannon information) 

If and only if the RECEIVER is a learner or learning machine which has a set of expected possibilities with regard to the SOURCE, Then the pattern received REDUCES THE RECEIVER’s UNCERTAINTY about what is the situation at the source (sender). NOTE THAT: RUR-INFORMATION is a relationship property between the message – pattern and the particular receiver, NOT a property of the message in itself. 4

The receiver’s internal state is changed by the received pattern. ď Ž

NOISE is whatever extraneous pattern gets in with the DESIRED SIGNAL 

 

Noise INCREASES the receiver’s uncertainty. Note that WHAT is NOISE and what is desired signal is decided by only the RECEIVER. SIGNAL / NOISE RATIO = 30dB ! ?? 8
