MEZZANINE This project called for an innovative approach to using otherwise wasted space, all while adhering to a limited budget. Using netting allowed for natural light to filter into the space, making it a comfortable area for leisure above and a workspace below. Using aluminum trussing allowed for easy assembly in a small loft space.

STRAND-02 A ceiling suspended light fixture that utilizes the transparency and malleability of thin wood stands. The strand light features a unique infusion process that replaces harmful formaldehyde glues with eco friendly bio resins. LEDs provide natural white light, illuminating the wood composite to reveal a beautiful grain texture adding an ambience to any space.

DAZZLE

Dazzle is a collaboration between STACKLAB and AAMP Studio for the OAA MOVE installation party. This installation seeks to create a sense of movement and illusion in an otherwise static office within the OAA headquarters. We’ve taken cues from dazzle ships used by the British during WWI, which were camouflaged to make it difficult to determine size, speed and direction of travel. In a nod to the OAA’s temporary move & renovation, we arranged foam tubes on the floor and walls in various directions to create a three-dimensional and immersive space that plays with perception and movement

SAND + DRAFT

To create cast metal parts, foundries use molds that are generally ‘pulled’ off an original positive called a pattern. Despite their importance in the manufacturing process, these patterns are often only used a handful of times before they are decommissioned and stored indefinitely. As part of their larger mission to reimagine salvaged materials for contemporary purposes, Stacklab has been investigating the use of historic, decommissioned patterns as formwork elements in the creation of functional, cast furnishings and art objects.

The Sand + Draft sculptures are made from compacted refractory sand, and the surface relief on each piece is drawn from re-purposed, historic, wooden impeller and pump casing patterns from Stacklab’s collection. The result is a contemporary expression of the sand casting process, in homage to our industrial heritage and the people behind it. Refractory foundry sand can be composed temporarily as sculpture and then easily broken down and reused for regular manufacturing. Each Sculpture is a truncated pyramid with maximum dimensions on 42” and minimum dimensions of 35”. This geometry is a function of draft angle required to de-mold these large objects. A continuation of the Cube Series (2013) - developed for New York Gallery Maison Gerard- Sand + Draft was made possible through the support of AZURE and industry partners at Canadian Specialty Castings and Grand River Pattern.
