CULTIVATING PRESERVATION & SUSTAINABLE TOURISM Te x t b y L i s a M c T i g u e
Making our final approach into Podgorica, Montenegro, we flew over snow-capped rugged mountains and rounded a large lake. Knowing next to nothing about this tiny country, roughly the size of the greater Charlotte area, I stepped off the plane with an attempt to take in the flatlands met by the mountains that I now know are the Dinaric Alps. My eyes wanted to soak in the beauty, but as they watered from the cold and the wind pierced my jacket, my feet moved faster seeking the warmth of the main airport building. Greeted by my driver on the other side of customs, I commented, “it’s so pretty, but it’s freezing.” He assured me that the weather today was out of the ordinary and that my trip would soon find warmer weather and sunshine. As we blazed down the mountain roads towards the little town that would be my home for the next three months, I sat silently and stared out the window at the amazing wild beauty of this little country.
