Chairman’s Message I am pleased to report it has been another very successful year for The Marketing Society Scotland with membership levels, and event attendance with positive feedback, at an all time high. As we started to plan for 2019 we thought we   might revisit our vision and build on the new   global mission of The Marketing Society – to Inspire Brave Leaders. Working with one of the most respected   planners in the country and a Fellow of The Marketing Society, David Amers from The Leith Agency, and with input from various members   of The Marketing Society Scotland (MSS) Council,   we are excited about our new vision;

To build a vibra nt marketing com munity, renowned for e nlig thinking, innova htened tion and creativity.

“ 2

The Marketing Society Scotland

I Annual Review 2018

So now the challenge for all of us is to get  involved and help us realise this bold ambition. As we strive to inspire brave leaders, it is important that today’s marketing professionals play a stronger role in driving adoption   of a customer orientation throughout their organisations. This may require agility in   adopting the language of business and not just marketing internally. Marketers should also pro-actively embrace the explosion of data   and seek ways to translate this into meaningful and inspiring insights that drive better customer outcomes and stronger business results. I would like to take this opportunity to thank   the MSS Council and all our sponsors and supporters as well as Lux Events and all of   The Marketing Society team, both in London   and Edinburgh, for their hard work and support. Michael Doran  Chair, The Marketing Society Scotland,  Head of Research, Planning & Brand  at Sainsbury’s Bank

BACKGROUND CHECK MEMBERSHIP

Director’s Report I am pleased to report that we now have over 600 members in Scotland – this has doubled over the last 5 years and now represents more than 25% of the UK members. We also have 59 of Scotland’s leading organisations as corporate members representing most industry sectors and disciplines, public and private sector, client and agency, large and small.

I believe if we are to build the reputation of marketing as a profession and career, we need to start in the classroom by working closely with schools and universities. Our most important objective remains; to increase engagement and inspire our members. The results from our annual membership survey (detailed on page 5) reflects our commitment to this and shows we are hitting our targets.

To achieve this we need the support of all   our members to encourage all their marketing colleagues and contacts to sign up to our weekly emails which will keep them updated on our activities and industry matters. I would like to thank our partners at The Union, Union Direct and Union Data for their support with our database campaign.

2018 EVENTS

I am particularly pleased we are developing strong relationships with universities across the country and have exciting plans to help them develop their Student Marketing Societies.

An important new objective we have set ourselves for 2019 is to build our database of marketing and marketing services professionals in Scotland from a post GDPR clean-up of 2,500 contacts in 2018   to 3,500 contacts by the end of 2019.

Finally, I am delighted to welcome back Caroline Hill to the new role of Marketing Manager for   The Marketing Society Scotland – I am sure she   can rely on your support with all of our exciting   new initiatives. Graeme Atha  Director, The Marketing Society Scotland

What is brave? Brave is admitting 75% of brands are crap. Brave is making less; but making it better. Brave is taking time to look at a new agency model. Brave is not spending all the budget on 30 secs of giggles, every time. Brave is working with truths, feelings and hearts. Brave is genuinely solving business problems. Brave is doing work that’s actually of some significance. Brave is making a call to a different agency for a chat. Brave is asking about a free Gate workshop.
