Introducing Edinburgh

City of innovation Anaesthetics, chloroform, antiseptic, astrophysics and Dolly the cloned sheep – just a few examples of innovation and invention associated with Edinburgh and its environs over the centuries. The city region has nurtured some of the world’s leading doctors, scientists, lawyers, engineers, architects and philosophers – and it continues to do just that. It boasts many centres of excellence that attract some of the world’s sharpest and most creative minds.

Science and technology World-renowned research institutes and universities combine to give Edinburgh its well-deserved global influence in many disciplines, including informatics, micro- and opto-electronics, energy, renewables, cleantech, electronics and life sciences. It is an acknowledged leader in technology convergence. The University of Edinburgh is ranked among the top in Europe, alongside Cambridge, Oxford and three in London.

Across the Edinburgh Science Triangle, there has been significant benefit from public sector investment resulting in: Edinburgh BioQuarter, a landmark £600m life sciences research and commercialisation development; the £42m purpose-built Informatics Forum at the University of Edinburgh; the new £60m Roslin Institute building and the University’s new Vet School at Easter Bush, one of the leading groups in the world focused on the biology and health of companion and production animals. Edinburgh Science Triangle is a pioneering collaboration of universities, research institutes, science parks and local councils across Scotland’s historic capital and surrounding area. The main objective is to foster this community, to attract new investment and strengthen the links between academia and business. This dynamic community houses more than 3,000 world-class researchers, over 100 market-leading companies, across more than 370,000 sq m of flexible accommodation. The combined space of the Edinburgh Science Triangle parks places the ‘super campus’ amongst the 20 largest science parks in the world. With eight science and research locations all within 30 minutes of each other and located close to Edinburgh city centre, academic hubs and research institutes – Edinburgh Science Triangle is a major part of Scotland’s vibrant science and technology sector. Politics, law and finance Edinburgh developed as Scotland’s legal and political centre and gained the status of ‘royal burgh’ from Robert the Bruce in the 14th century. It is home to the Scottish Parliament, the Scottish legal courts and numerous international consulates. Scotland has a distinguished history in financial services that dates back over 300 years and Edinburgh can lay claim to world-changing innovations including the mortgage and internet banking. Edinburgh is the UK’s second financial centre after London and Europe’s fourth by equity www.meetingedinburgh.com

The arts are celebrated in the national collections of art, the tiny galleries, the awe-inspiring museums, theatres and many cultural institutions throughout Edinburgh. The city’s rich tradition of writing was recognised in 2004 when Edinburgh was named the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature.

assets. It is the only city other than London, in the UK, where you can find all sectors of financial services in operation, from retail banking to pensions to fund management to stockbroking. The first ever UK Green Investment Bank (GIB) opened its headquarters in Edinburgh – created to accelerate the UK’s transition to a green economy. Scotland has enormous green energy potential and this investment will unlock Scotland’s renewables future, providing sustainable and affordable green energy across the UK.

The EICC is a short walk from a wide variety of excellent hotels and being in the centre of a compact city means that delegates can fully enjoy Edinburgh’s many attractions. Edinburgh has one of the UK’s fastest growing airports with 40 airlines connecting from 100 destinations worldwide. The Airport is just 7 miles away from the EICC and can be reached by frequent tram and bus links, or by taxi. For those travelling by train, Edinburgh’s Waverley Station is just a few minutes away by taxi and Haymarket Station can be reached in 5 minutes on foot. Speak to the EICC Sales Team on +44 (0)131 300 3333 or visit www.eicc.co.uk to start planning your event.

Residential Conferences Edinburgh First continues to invest in first class conference venues and facilities. From our purpose-built John McIntyre Conference Centre, to the scholarly buildings of the Playfair Library and the newly-refurbished McEwan Hall, Edinburgh First boasts more than 70 meeting rooms across 16 conference venues.

The John McIntyre Conference centre can offer 330 theatre style with four breakout rooms and two boardrooms, all on the first floor. There’s a bright central lounge with exhibition space, outdoor terrace (with marquee on request), free Wi-Fi throughout and touch-screen audio-visual equipment. Delegates can also dine in our greatvalue contemporary restaurant downstairs. For a more traditional conference venue, our 19th century McEwan Hall can seat 1,000 delegates in its tiered auditorium, making it one of Edinburgh First’s larger venues. It is also enhanced by the nearby Appleton Tower, David Hume Tower and George Square facilities, including 10 tiered lecture theatres and over 30 classrooms.

Close to the heart of Edinburgh, our venues are conveniently located for access to the city centre. Our great value year-round accommodation options include the 3-star standard Salisbury Green Hotel, Masson House and Kenneth Mackenzie, the latter two currently undergoing major refurbishment. The Caves The Caves will wow your guests and guarantee that your event will be a truly memorable experience. The Caves is an intimate and atmospheric cavernous venue nestled in the depths of the 18th century South Bridge in the heart of the Old Town, and a stone’s throw from the famous Royal Mile. The Caves is steeped in colourful history, and every vaulted room that has been sympathetically restored to its former glory has a story to tell and a special place in Scotland’s past. From a former stables to the French Cavalry who were body guards for the Royal Family, the rumoured hunting ground of Burke and Hare, to the spiritual home of the Oyster Club of the Scottish Enlightenment.

Restored original wooden flooring, antique Chesterfields and original artefacts in the upstairs snug bar, old adverts from the 1700s and 1800s transformed into wallpaper, state of the art lighting and sound systems contrasted with atmospheric candles, are just some of the details that has given The Caves its numerous awards.

Marlin’s Wynd Marlin’s Wynd is an intimate and atmospheric cavernous venue nestled in the depths of the 18th century South Bridge in the heart of the Old Town on Blair Street, and a stone’s throw from the famous Royal Mile. Marlin’s Wynd is on the site of the original Marlin’s Wynd which was constructed in the 1540’s. The wynd was believed to be named after John Marlouin, the French stonemason who paved the Royal Mile around 1550. With the Reception area being part of a typical Edinburgh Georgian tenement built in 1787 and its vaults constructed in the 1540’s, Marlin’s Wynd spans centuries of Scottish history.

The Rowantree The Rowantree is an intimate and atmospheric cavernous venue nestled in the depths of the 18th century South Bridge in the heart of the Old Town, and a stone’s throw from the famous Royal Mile. This romantic venue is steeped in colourful history, and every vaulted room that has been sympathetically restored to its former glory has a story to tell and a special place in Scotland’s past. From the rumoured hunting ground of Burke and Hare, to the spiritual home of the Oyster Club of the Scottish Enlightenment, The Rowantree, was originally home to the renowned Lucky Middlemiss Tavern, an oyster tavern of the Scottish Enlightenment era that saw literary greats and Enlightenment figures throng the watering hole. Burns, David Hume, Adam smith, Deacon Brodie, Watt and Benjamin Franklin were just some of the regulars, with Robert Louis Stevenson once describing it as “a rabbit warren not only by the numbers of its twist and turns, but by its dark stairs frequented by loiterers and such other such low characters and as treacherous a place as I saw.”

Scottish Malt Whisky Society – The Vaults The Vaults has been home to fine drink, food specialists and pleasurable pursuits since the 1300’s As the oldest building in Scotland with the same continual purpose, the site of The Vaults has been home to fine drink, food specialists and pleasurable pursuits since the 1300s.

The Cask Room celebrates the history and continued role of The Vaults building. Once a storage room for fine casks of wine and spirits, it hosts discreet dinners and tastings.

Today, it is the ’Spiritual Home’ of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society – the world’s foremost malt whisky club, offering an exclusive and authentically Scottish experience.
