Introducing Edinburgh

City of innovation Anaesthetics, chloroform, antiseptic, astrophysics and Dolly the cloned sheep – just a few examples of innovation and invention associated with Edinburgh and its environs over the centuries. The city region has nurtured some of the world’s leading doctors, scientists, lawyers, engineers, architects and philosophers – and it continues to do just that. It boasts many centres of excellence that attract some of the world’s sharpest and most creative minds.

Science and technology World-renowned research institutes and universities combine to give Edinburgh its well-deserved global influence in many disciplines, including informatics, micro- and opto-electronics, energy, renewables, cleantech, electronics and life sciences. It is an acknowledged leader in technology convergence. The University of Edinburgh is ranked among the top in Europe, alongside Cambridge, Oxford and three in London.

Across the Edinburgh Science Triangle, there has been significant benefit from public sector investment resulting in: Edinburgh BioQuarter, a landmark £600m life sciences research and commercialisation development; the £42m purpose-built Informatics Forum at the University of Edinburgh; the new £60m Roslin Institute building and the University’s new Vet School at Easter Bush, one of the leading groups in the world focused on the biology and health of companion and production animals. Edinburgh Science Triangle is a pioneering collaboration of universities, research institutes, science parks and local councils across Scotland’s historic capital and surrounding area. The main objective is to foster this community, to attract new investment and strengthen the links between academia and business. This dynamic community houses more than 3,000 world-class researchers, over 100 market-leading companies, across more than 370,000 sq m of flexible accommodation. The combined space of the Edinburgh Science Triangle parks places the ‘super campus’ amongst the 20 largest science parks in the world. With eight science and research locations all within 30 minutes of each other and located close to Edinburgh city centre, academic hubs and research institutes – Edinburgh Science Triangle is a major part of Scotland’s vibrant science and technology sector. Over 170 routes serve 122 destinations – popular international direct flights from Edinburgh include Amsterdam, Oslo, Dublin, Paris, Geneva, Frankfurt and Istanbul; direct long haul to Abu Dhabi and up to 4 flights a day to New York. Also, Chicago, Doha, Toronto, Cancun and Florida; with an average of 54 daily flights to London. The airport is 12km from Edinburgh city centre, with excellent bus, tram and taxi services as well as a direct bus link to Glasgow city centre. Edinburgh Airport was named Best European Airport (5-10m passengers) for the third year in a row at the ACI EUROPE Best Airport Awards 2013 – the only airport to win the award three times in a row. It was also named Scottish Airport of the Year at the Scottish Transport Awards. (Correct as at April 2014.) www.edinburghairport.com

By rail

City centre train stations are Edinburgh Waverley and Edinburgh Haymarket which are linked to all the major cities and airports in Britain, with a high speed link to London in just over four hours. www.nationalrail.co.uk

Motorways and a network of major roads provide easy access to the city, often through spectacular scenery. The modern coach centre at St Andrew Square offers direct connections to all major cities in Britain. www.nationalexpress.com

Public transport

Edinburgh has an award-winning public bus service with modern vehicles and a frequent timetable in and around the city. A modern tram system offers an environmentally friendly, fast and high capacity service connecting the city centre with the Edinburgh Airport.

By tram

Edinburgh’s new tram service runs from Edinburgh Airport to York Place in the east end of the city centre, stopping at key transport links, shopping areas, events venues and business districts along the route. Trams offer a smooth, comfortable way to travel. Powered by electricity, they have zero on-street carbon emissions and are expected to make a positive contribution to Edinburgh’s natural environment. The trams will also help the city cope with the increased demand for public transport expected in the next decade. Operated by the Transport for Edinburgh group, trams are fully integrated with the city’s award winning bus service operated by Lothian Buses. Together with Lothian Buses, Edinburgh Trams provide a modern and efficient transport option for residents and visitors alike.

Conference & exhibition centres/academic venues

Edinburgh First The University of Edinburgh has a vast range of impressive historic and modern buildings that reflect its 400-year history. At Edinburgh First we bring these buildings to life as successful conference, dining and meeting venues that are full of Edinburgh’s character and charm. We will organise, cater and facilitate all your events and conferences professionally and efficiently to ensure that they run smoothly and create a lasting and memorable experience for your delegates. Our newly developed delegate management service is a seamless, cost-effective package which will save time and simplify the registration of delegates. Services such as a bespoke website, pre-event registration and reporting, and on-site delegate management are organised by our team of experts leaving time for our clients to concentrate on the event’s key elements.

Pollock Halls Our venues range from 19th century mansions – St Leonard’s Hall and Abden House – to the contemporary South Hall complex and our purpose-built John McIntyre Conference Centre. John McIntyre Conference Centre The plenary room seats 330 theatre style, there are four breakout rooms and two boardrooms, all on the first floor. There’s a bright central lounge with exhibition space, outdoor terrace (with marquee on request), free wi-fi throughout and touch-screen audio-visual equipment. Delegates can dine in our great-value contemporary restaurant downstairs.

The Caves The Caves will wow your guests and guarantee that your event will be a truly memorable experience. The Caves is an intimate and atmospheric cavernous venue nestled in the depths of the 18th century South Bridge in the heart of the Old Town, and a stone’s throw from the famous Royal Mile. The Caves is steeped in colourful history, and every vaulted room that has been sympathetically restored to its former glory has a story to tell and a special place in Scotland’s past. From a former stables to the French Cavalry who were body guards for the Royal Family, the rumoured hunting ground of Burke and Hare, to the spiritual home of the Oyster Club of the Scottish Enlightenment.

Restored original wooden flooring, antique Chesterfields and original artefacts in the upstairs snug bar, old adverts from the 1700s and 1800s transformed into wallpaper, state of the art lighting and sound systems contrasted with atmospheric candles, are just some of the details that has given The Caves its numerous awards.

Edinburgh has a long history of innovation in science and commerce and the Edinburgh Science Triangle is one of Europe’s leading locations for research, innovation and commercial exploitation.

Pentlands Science Park surrounds the worldfamous Moredun Research Institute. It has a dedicated lecture theatre, a light and airy atrium and a boardroom with a terrace overlooking the landscaped park.

The science parks and innovation centres within Edinburgh Science Triangle are designed to accommodate and support knowledge-intensive companies at every life stage and facilitate access to world-class academic expertise and research. The combined space of Edinburgh Science Triangle Parks places the “super-campus” amongst the 20 largest science parks in the world. Marlin’s Wynd Marlin’s Wynd is an intimate and atmospheric cavernous venue nestled in the depths of the 18th century South Bridge in the heart of the Old Town on Blair Street, and a stone’s throw from the famous Royal Mile. Marlin’s Wynd is on the site of the original Marlin’s Wynd which was constructed in the 1540’s. The wynd was believed to be named after John Marlouin, the French stonemason who paved the Royal Mile around 1550. With the Reception area being part of a typical Edinburgh Georgian tenement built in 1787 and its vaults constructed in the 1540’s, Marlin’s Wynd spans centuries of Scottish history.
