WELCOME I always look forward to the summer programme as our CAT End of Year Show and National Youth Dance Company performance are two of my highlights in the year. It is genuinely inspiring watching so many young people dancing, and I feel a great sense of pride in our home-grown talent. Next year is the 10th anniversary of our CAT and we are starting to see graduates go on to have wonderful careers in dance.

Brendan Keaney Artistic Director & Chief Executive

At a different stage in the life spectrum, our over 50s EncoreEast group has been selected, for the second time, to perform at Sadler’s Wells Elixir festival in June. We are, therefore, particularly delighted to be hosting our first summer intensive for over 50s led by artists from Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures and DanceEast Associate Artist Alexander Whitley.

We are excited to welcome the extraordinary Canadian company, Cas Public, who will be making their first visit to CONTENTS the DanceHouse. If you don’t have small children, I suggest WATCH A PERFORMANCE you borrow some for the day and get some tickets for Suites Curieuses! Inspired by the story of Little Red Riding Hood, it is a P5–20 truly wonderful piece of dance for all the family. GET DANCING P21–30 CAT P33–34 JERWOOD DANCEHOUSE P35–36

Witness, the main piece in this double-bill, is a sensitive portrayal of how loved ones cope when mental health problems take hold of someone close. Raw and insightful, Witness breaks down preconceptions by uncovering the realities of an illness, which is too often misunderstood.

Turning the spotlight on mental health and the things we choose to hide, this captivating double bill features a rich mix of dance and movement styles, intimate solos, emotive duets and powerful ensembles. Touching, sad, funny and absurd, this is relevant and up-to-the-minute dance theatre at its best. Words Unspoken, a short work exploring the untold secrets of the performers on stage, is the opening piece of this double-bill. Six dancers perform flawlessly formed movements in a striking and synchronised style. The effect is hypnotic and provides the perfect opener to what is a captivating production. Company Chameleon produces inspiring and original dance theatre productions in Manchester, which tour across the world. Following the high-energy performance of Beauty of the Beast in June 2016, this performance delves deep into an issue which affects one in four of us each year.

TRIPLE BILL FEATURING RED RIDING HOOD Ballet Black are back following a sell-out show here in 2016 that delighted a new generation of dance fans with its ‘dash, daring and joie de vivre’ (The Guardian). In her latest mixed bill, Artistic Director Cassa Pancho commissions bold choreography once more, blending the classical and contemporary, narrative and abstract, for her ballet company comprising international dancers of black and Asian descent. A four-hander characterised by intricate detail and propulsive energy, Captured ebbs and flows to the fiery emotion of Martin Lawrance’s edgy choreography, set to a Shostakovich string quartet. Celebrated British choreographer Michael Corder, whose glittering versions of Cinderella and The Snow Queen have been seen across Europe, creates the evening’s second abstract piece, House of Dreams. South Bank Award winner Annabelle Lopez Ochoa turns a popular fairy tale on its head as Red Riding Hood is given a surprising twist!

TRIBE | STILL I RISE (PREVIEW) Former Candoco and Jasmin Vardimon Company dancer Victoria Fox Markiewicz previews her new work Still I Rise. Raw and energetic dance is combined with instinctual physicality inspired by the powerful and defiant words of Maya Angelou’s poem of the same name. Five daring female dancers begin a journey of simmering unison, restless duets and tender solos all performed with a gut-wrenching power. Pounding rhythms drive the movement and create an intense stark world where hope dies last. Falling down, gathering up… we rise.

How do we encounter things beyond what we ‘like’? How do we reach diversity and sustainability in dance? In this talk and discussion they will share the fruits of this period of international research.

The scheme is devised to prepare young dancers for full-time professional dance training or university and includes tuition in five core areas:

• Technique • Creative and choreography • Performance • Health education (including injury prevention, nutrition, Pilates & Yoga)

• Enrichment activities (including theatre trips) and workshops in a range of styles.
