WELCOME At Loughborough Design School we believe that good design makes for a better future. We provide the next generation of designers with the skills and insight needed to face this challenge. Across the pages of this book you will find over 100 final year design students whose innovation and creativity stands out. This demonstrates clearly the unique way we are able to blend design and technology expertise resulting in the production of functional product prototypes.

Professor Tracy Bhamra Dean Loughborough Design School

We are privileged to have students who display such an exceptionally wide range of talent, experience and skill. Our final year design students are proud of the journey they have taken, the meticulous attention to detail and the tireless devotion which they have committed to their final year projects. Join us as we celebrate and showcase their creations and innovations and see what the next generation of designers is going to bring us. I hope that you will find it as interesting, informative and inspiring as I do.

Undergraduate study At undergraduate level we currently offer four courses. These cover the areas of Product Design and Technology, Industrial Design and Technology, Ergonomics (Human Factors Design) and Design Ergonomics. This book features work from two of these courses, Product Design and Technology, and Industrial Design and Technology. Both courses can be studied full-time over three years or over four years with the inclusion of a placement year in year three. Upon successful completion students will be awarded a Bachelor of Science (BSc) for the Product Design course and Bachelor of Arts (BA) for the Industrial Design course. The BA has a bias towards product innovation through the integration of user needs, aspirations and product appearance. As well as still retaining a focus on designing great looking products, the BSc also develops capabilities in the underlying principles on which products operate by studying and applying mechanics, electronics and materials sciences through the course.

Research The School’s research activity covers the disciplines of design, ergonomics and human factors in a number of different areas. As well as having a wide reaching impact and providing clear insight to a large number of companies, and influential bodies, it helps to inform our teaching practice. This gives students access to cutting edge developments, ensuring that our courses are always up-to-date.

Enterprise Within the School the concept of enterprise takes a number of different forms. From providing students with the opportunities to interact with our industry collaborators, to supporting students who wish to start their own businesses. Enterprise education and our ability to work with and for industry help us to meet and exceed industry expectations.

The School Set on the east side of Loughborough University’s campus, Loughborough Design School is housed within a purpose built £21million development. It is home to over 100 staff and 700 students. The School’s core business spans the areas of teaching, enterprise and research. These three areas combine to make us one of, if not the best, design school in the UK.

Experience Loughborough Design School provides the opportunity to take an optional placement year, which the majority of students take, knowing the value of industry exposure. This provides the experience for students to be employed in a range of impressive companies around the world, an opportunity that many design students outside of the school do not have. Whilst working, students are involved in completing a wide range of tasks, including live briefs, translating their academic knowledge into real life projects. Numerous students that choose to undertake a placement discover that they develop both their design and life skills by working closely with experienced designers and engineers in an industry setting. This year demonstrates to future employers that Loughborough students can easily integrate and contribute to a companies design team and process. The experience and exposure gained proves a valuable asset when job hunting in the future.

Wonder Vision “During my time at Wonder Vision I was able to develop my skills in presentation and design communication, translating these skills into my final year work” Alex Morrison

Charlwood Design “Working abroad allowed me to understand the Australian design consultancy market. Undertaking a range of multi- disciplinary projects has improved my ability in time management” Gigi Chan

Student Design Association

Design Week

Sa

This is a special week-long event which takes place around the end of January each year, within the School. The principle of the event is to supply students with a choice of challenging live briefs from five companies, from which they choose one to work on. This is followed by an intense seven day project involving insight generation, user interactions, concept generation and concept presentation phases. The designs are then presented to the brief providing companies with the option for the products to be developed.

Su

TADA, otherwise known as ‘That Awesome Design Association’ is a student run association, which is part of the Students’ Union. Currently any student at the University, interested in design can join, however a large number of the membership comes from Loughborough Design School. The association meets regularly to run creative workshops, talks and trips with local companies, design consultancies and guest lecturers. The aim of the association is to broaden students’ design experience and provide more exposure with industry leaders within the design field.

A number of prestigious companies, such as iCandy, Samsung and Logitech, have presented briefs to our students this year, aiming to tap into the latest generation of designers and their fresh ideas and innovations. Many of the outcomes from the week have been taken and developed by these companies over the years, with Loughborough Design School students’ contributing to products and services now found all over the world. This valuable contribution is also beneficial to the students’ themselves, enhancing their personal portfolios and experience of learning to meet client and employer expectations.

If you are a company that would like to get involved in Design Week, or would simply like to know more about the event, please contact Dr Steve Summerskill, s.j.summerskill2@lboro.ac.uk.

New Designers This event sees student designers, makers and creators from all over the UK come together to exhibit their work at an annual exhibition in London. Each year the School sends a number of students to showcase the very best work that has been produced that year. It is a fantastic opportunity for these students to network with industry in the heart of the UK’s capital, promoting their work and ideas to the best of the best. The event is also open to the public and we would warmly welcome visits to our stand during the 2 – 5 July 2014 exhibition.

Loughborough Design School’s Degree Show has been organised by a voluntary committee of fourteen individuals spanning the two design courses that the School offers. Week after week this dedicated team have met, supported by three members of School staff, to thrash out concepts, ideas and graphic design work to make the Degree Show 2014 the most impressive yet. It is their commitment and creativity, undertaken in conjunction with their final year peers, which has resulted in the formation of a professional and coherent show, showcasing the

work of all the final year design students from 2014. The committee has worked hard together to ensure that everything from event branding, to invitations, the website and a new app have been designed, created and delivered. This has involved an extraordinary amount of effort, teamwork and devotion at the pinnacle of their academic career thus far. We hope that in reading this book you will not only be impressed by the high standard of work that our final year students’ have produced, but also would appreciate the creativity and skill demonstrated by our committee in designing something which so accurately reflects their graduating year.
