Thailand’s long affinity with British Schools

E

ver since the turn of the last century when King Chulalongkorn sent a number of his sons to attend public school in England, that green and pleasant land has been a favoured educational venue for affluent Thais. Still seen by many as the heart of independent education, the high costs involved saw a number of the less successful British boarding schools closing down some years ago. Prep schools catering for the 7 to 13 year olds were also affected by changed social attitudes towards sending children away from home at a young age. The need to survive has ironically forced the best British schools to beef up their facilities as well as open their doors to a much wider cross section of students from around the world. Some of Britain’s best public schools are now recruiting students from around the world including the countries of South East Asia. This means that the opportunities available can be unrivalled for children of the right temperament whose parents can afford the fees of around 23,000 pounds (1,150,000 Baht) a year. Ian Bushell, a Director of Mentor International in Bangkok who represents a number of Britain’s top schools in

Thailand says that although many Thai parents are initially reluctant to send their offspring overseas for schooling, they want them to have the advantages of Western schooling which will enable them to get into a top Western university. They also want them to benefit from the whole cultural experience of living and studying overseas. He says “Britain has always had a good reputation among the educated Thai community and many of them send their children to school there for this reason. Whilst there are now more international schools available in Thailand, many parents prefer the overseas experience as there are often fewer than 10 Thai children in most British schools which means children imbibe the culture and language very quickly. In many countries, including Thailand, increasing numbers of parents are recognizing that the best investment for their children’s future prosperity is private education. British boarding schools have a reputation second to none. Statistically, it is likely to considerably increase the chances of getting into a world class university including Oxford, Cambridge or The London School of Economics and ultimately getting a good job. portunities for academic, cultural and sporting success are extraordinary. But apart from that, the traditional virtues of good manners, concern for others, and an emphasis on education for life are what set these schools apart and why generations of Thai families have sent their children there.” Two top independent schools, Ellesmere College, a 130 year old Co educational School in Shropshire and Cobham Hall School for Girls in Kent have both announced generous scholarship awards for Thai students. Both schools are offering awards 50% of the full boarding fees for students aged 16+ seeking to enroll on the 2 year IB or A level course. Further awards of 25% for students enrolling in Year 9 aged 13+ for the full five years GCSE and IB/Alevel programme are also available. It’s the look of bright, hard-working high school students staring at their first SAT Reasoning question. What could “lachrymose” possibly mean, they wonder as they look over a typical question in the sentence completion section of the Critical Reading segment of an SAT test? Sometimes that look is of pure fear? It’s only natural for students aspiring to go to top universities to wonder whether they are cut out for a challenge such as the SAT. The SAT is not like any test a high school student has experienced. It’s certainly not like a regular math or English exam, and it is far more demanding than TOEFL, which measures how well someone can speak and understand English. The SAT measures how logically a student’s brain functions. This standardized test looks at a student’s ability to reason, giving college admissions officers a yardstick for deciding whether an applicant is capable of handling a university curriculum. However, neither parents nor your children need despair. Ask teachers a few questions from the SAT and you will be surprised to find they also struggle to come up with some answers to what are often tricky questions. Even those of us who teach the SAT have to give extra thought to some of the questions. The good news is it is like any other skill we learn. If you drive a car, think back to when you first tried to change gears on a standard stick shift. You basically knew how to drive after reading the driving manual, but your foot and hand seemed completely out of sync with the clutch and stick once you got behind the wheel. GO TO TOP UNIVERSITY students have to learn how the 3 hour and 45 minute test works, get some strategies on how to tackle the reading, writing and math components, and get accustomed to working under deadlines. With less than 1% of SAT test takers (per test date) getting a full score, students have to practice, practice, practice. To do this, students need a plan. To prepare for the SAT, students can form study groups, tap their English and Math teachers for extra help, or even seek online resources for help. Strategy and practice books are also available at most bookstores. A popular option is to take an SAT course, which can be effective for those short on time. One key is for students to start preparing for their SATs early, so they get to see as many questions as possible before test day. The great thing about the SAT is students truly learn from their mistakes. Explanations about why they are wrong helps students identify the types of SAT questions and understand the ways the test makers are trying to trick them. (In some cases, what seems to be the most obvious answer on first reading the question, is no more than a decoy to steer the student away from the right answer). Though most of the questions are multiple choice, there is a requirement for some writing. Learning how to write properly for SAT will benefit students when they eventually have to write university essays. If you are a parent who took the SAT when you were preparing for university, you need to know that this is not the same test you took. As the world has changed and

become more complex and competitive, so too has the nature of the SAT. So, once you and your child have decided the SAT is a must to gain acceptance to the right university, there is no time like now to get started. School is done and the kids have lots of spare time on their hands. “With the global economic slowdown and increasing health/security concerns abroad, many of my clients have chosen to keep their teenagers home this summer,” Admissions-Office director Sai Thanarat said. “As a result, keeping their children productive and stimulated is a major challenge most parents face.” Teens can keep busy this summer and get a head start for the upcoming college application process. The admission process continues to get more competitive every year, and the SAT score threshold has jumped from a hurdle to a pole vault. Admissions-Office has partnered with ATP to create a course that offers a methodical, skill-building approach to SAT strategies and competency. “We understand the needs of students and developed a course which goes beyond tricks and giving answers to test questions. Students need a program that incorporates fundamental test-taking skills, time management strategies, and test psychology techniques for the greatest overall advantage on test day. Students need to build essential muscle-memory and develop the focus, speed, and stamina necessary to excel on test day,” says ATP’s Master SAT Instructor, Eddie Vee.

“The best time for students to refine their SAT skills is during these summer months, while they are not over-extended as they are during the school year,” Thanarat said. The benefit of signing up is that the SAT course can be taken as part of an overall strategy for college admission offered by the Admissions-Office. “Also, this is time to think about other elements in the application form that the college admissions officers look for,” Thanarat said. “Has your child done sufficient community service, and is it just going to the orphanage or reading for the blind like all the other classmates? Not that these are unworthy causes, but they simply cannot distinguish your child enough from the other university applicants. And what about internships? Work experiences show that students have developed a sense of responsibility. Work also plays a major role in helping students to define their intellectual interest and passions - an important point that many colleges look for.” To help parents and students plan for their college applications, Admissions-Office, which is located in The United Center on Silom Road, will be holding a College Admissions Open House the first week of July. Oh, and by the way lachrymose means: Tending to cause tears. And that won’t be the case for students who are prepared for SAT.
