The world of fashion requires teamwork, flexibility, creativity and innovation - very much like the world of theatre, film and television. However, the one principal difference is that the world of fashion moves in a much faster pace. A fashion show or photo-shoot can take days, weeks or even months to organise depending on the extent of the production: that being said it is a show day that separates the professionals from the novices.

Before a production, the Performing Make up Artist will meet with the director and performers to establish their visualisations of character make up. The Artist will assess the size and lighting plans for the theatre, which will support and establish make up requirements. The smaller the venue, for example, the less make up is required. The Make up Artist will look at photographs and sketches to obtain the exact character image he or she is planning for. Becoming a historian is important to study character descriptions and period settings to validate that all make up effects are in keeping with the period in which the play is set. for each performance, like wigs, beards, cosmetics and facial cleansers.

In the film and video industry, Make up Artists play an imperative role in the total appearance of the actors and actresses. Not only do the Make up Artists strive to make each person on the big or little screen look as notable as possible, but he or she may also be required to make them look older, younger, hurt or even actually alter some aspect of their physical appearance with make up and masks or partial masks. The Make up Artist works attentively with the director and production team to create just the look that is mandatory for the various parts of the movie, or even just for the healthy look that most actors and actresses wish to have during interviews and appearances. Since the studio lighting can add shadows and accentuate features, make up artists use their skills to minimize the often negative affects of the harsh lighting.

The work involved ranges from creating contemporary looks to recreating period designs and styles, and transforming actors' physical appearance. Make up and hair effects include the design and application of wigs, hairpieces, hair extensions, facial hair, bald caps, tattoos, body paint; as well as medical effects such as cuts, scars, bullet wounds, burns, bruises, blood and the physical symptoms of various diseases. Ageing and death effects are also the responsibility of the Make up and Hair department.

WHAT IS THE JOB? Increased multi-skilling in film and television industries has meant that employees are required to be expert in both make up and hair, and the departments are often merged. Make up and Hair Designers' responsibilities vary subject to production needs. The Make up and Hair departments may be collective, with a Make up and Hair Designer in charge; or they may be separate with a Chief Make up Artist and a Chief Hairdresser directing their respective sections. On larger film productions two or more units may work instantaneously, with chiefs overseeing hair and/or make-up on each unit and the Designer in overall control. A team of Make up / Hair Artists and Assistants are usually employed in the department, and there may also be trainee positions. Make up and Hair Designers work closely with, or may also take on the role of, Personal Make up Artists and Hairdressers, working exclusively on particular (usually principal) performers.

Make up and Hair Designers usually work on feature films and high budget television dramas and must be proficient in both make up and hair techniques. Make up and hair are key essentials in the overall design of films or television productions, creating a look for the characters in relation to social class, time periods, and any other foundations required to produce the desired impression. Make up and Hair Designers are accountable for the overall design, application, continuity and care of make up and hair throughout the preproduction and production periods.

Prior to shooting or recording Make up and Hair Designers select the staff for their department, and explain the design brief to ensure that the look is consistent. They organise the overall departmental production schedule, and oversee the day to day breakdown of responsibilities. In collaboration with Assistant Directors / Floor Managers they calculate accurate call times for staff and performers. They draw up and allocate notes about principal and supporting actors, detailing each scene's make up / hair "looks" and changes. These notes are vital for maintaining continuity throughout the production. Make up and Hair Designers work with the camera department on test shots to see how make up and hair looks under different lighting conditions. On studio television productions they liaise with Lighting Directors and Technicians to ensure that skin tones, etc, are in keeping with the overall design concept. They supervise the make up and hair processes throughout each shooting day, and ensure that continuity is maintained within their department. They keep accurate records

of monies spent, and liaise with Accounts Department Personnel to ensure that they stay within budget. Make up and Hair Designers also oversee all publicity shoots. Once productions are completed they are responsible for the return of all hired items, and for preparing final records of all monies spent.

TYPICAL CAREER ROUTES Make up and Hair Designers are usually experienced personnel who have been employed in the film and / or television industries for 10 to15 years, working in a variety of genres including commercials, pop promos, corporate productions, light entertainment, documentary dramas, etc. They may have started their careers working as Trainees, progressing to Make up and Hair Assistants, to Make up and Hair Artists working on larger and more complex productions, and finally to Make up and Hair Designers. Create the looks of each character that will set alight the imagination of the audience. As a Costume Designer you will design and create the clothes and accessories that actors wear in their performances. Through shapes, colours and textures you will make a striking and powerful visual statement to the audience. You will be part of the collaborative team including the Director and the Set and Lighting Designers to ensure that costumes are smoothly integrated into the production. The costumes you create will communicate important character information including their occupation, social status, gender, age, sense of style and tendencies towards conformity or individualism. Your designs will reinforce the mood and style of the production, distinguish between the major and minor characters, suggest relationships between characters, change an actor’s appearance, suggest changes in character development and age and be objects of beauty in their own right.

You will determine the effective seating for your show and staging designed around the show type and location. You will focus on all areas of staging including developing the stage and/or runway, creating a background and setting the lights. You will determine the use of props to highlight the garments and the theme of the show. The positioning and location of the audience is most important – you will determine the seating patterns for the event and ensure that the A-list are seated in all the right places! Lighting is also important to convey the theme and atmospherics for the event, they could also be part of the fashion! Karl Lagerfeld used lighting as the focus for his ready-to-wear line for Chanel called ‘Walking on Light’. Models wore platform sandals with a clear plastic sole that beamed neon lights at each step with the entire runway being descending steps outlined in neon lights!

Set the atmosphere for your presentation in the staging framework of the fashion show. In 1999, Viktor & Rolf introduced their first haute couture show using minimal staging to their eager fans. Centre stage was Maggie Rizer, the solitary model for the show, who was positioned on a revolving pedestal. The theme: a ten-act performance in which the two innovative designers dressed their living doll in layers of beige, lace and shimmer. Or you could design your event using inspiration from Givenchy. Givenchy showcased medieval-inspired designs on transparent mannequins, creating the feel of a museum exhibition abstract from a catwalk show. Design catwalk shows that are innovative and set the fashion world abuzz whilst highlight the merchandise – the spotlight of any show. As a Fashion Marketing and Design Manager you will focus on the effective design of both visible and hidden areas from the audience.
