How to Make Passive Pharma Packaging More Flexible, Cost-effective and Eco-friendly IPI talks to Sven Rölle About Modular Cooling Systems... Q. Since 2008 Eutecma GmbH has dedicated itself to the development, production and sales of passive cooling systems for transport and logistics, arguably revolutionising the pharma-technical innovations landscape. Could you tell us why eutecma has challenged standard solutions and offered alternatives in cold chain logistics? We are always at our best when customers give us tricky problems that seem impossible to solve at first glance. That has driven what we do here from the very beginning. “Is there a temperaturestable, reliable cold storage element in cold chain logistics that doesn’t require any additional buffer elements, spacers or foam materials – and on top of that, can simplify our internal packaging processes?” We were asked this question eleven years ago by a globally renowned pharmaceutical corporation. Our answer: the patented ICECATCH© Solid Insulated, a water-based passive cold storage unit with an integrated hydrophobic insulation layer. As the only such product on the market, the ICECATCH© Solid Insulated has remained one of a kind to this day. In combination with a fluid space and a hard foam coolant retainer, which ensures controlled retention thanks to a vacuum process used in production, it cleverly takes advantage of physical processes. To date it has been used millions of times and has set new standards for cold chain logistics. In 2009, however, there were no signs that the ICECATCH© Solid Insulated would ever achieve such sales numbers because we started noticing these new cool bricks kept running into the problem that they didn’t fit well into a number of the commercially available cool boxes on the market. We were kind of missing the key to unlock the door. that is?” Posing this question was our eureka moment, the cell from which the intelligent PROTECT solutions emerged. They offer a temperaturestable home for 120 hours for sensitive pharmaceutical, healthcare, lab diagnostics and biotechnological products – without any need for extra energy and in all pharma-relevant production areas, meaning ambient (+15 °C to +25 °C), cold (+2 °C to +8 °C) and frozen (<-20 °C) situations. Q. Cooling systems for temperaturesensitive products such as pharmaceutical products always require a more dynamic supply chain that is above all safe but also cost-effective. How does eutecma address this challenge? What exactly is so unique in eutecma cooling systems? If the eutecma system possessed a DNA, two genes would probably be responsible for its unique features: flexibility and modularity. Whatever advantages our customers and their supply chain experience are based on these two characteristics. Flexibility is the result of the uniform format of the cool and warm bricks. They are always: one size fits all. Be it ambient, cold or frozen logistics, be it a mini delivery of 4 litres or an XL delivery of 1600 litres – the form stable ICECATCH©-
passive energy storage units are available for all PROTECT box sizes from eutecma in three formats. There is a cooling element that is suitable for every temperature range. And since pharmaceutical companies, wholesalers and shippers only need to schedule, store, precondition and package with one cooling format per temperature range, storage costs go down, handling becomes simpler and work processes are streamlined. The modularity of the eutecma packaging solutions is achieved by a unique stacking system that was introduced in 2013 for the first time for the PROTECT pallet shipper and has been an integral part of all our boxes ever since. And as the filling requirements grow, so do the boxes in height, making them able to accommodate various volumes. Since both “genes” fit so perfectly, the end result is a very temperature-stable cooling system with the benefit of a high degree of security. Q. What is so special about this stacking system? How does it impact the packing process and the subsequent transport?
