Led team to create a new 75,000 gallon shark tank, food/beverage, retail and outdoor interactive exhibits. The sharks can be experienced in two venues. There are three shallow interactive pools with bottom dwelling shark species, which are safe for children and adults to touch. A larger deeper tank, filled with more dangerous sharks, can be viewed from above or through a large underwater window. Senior Designer. University of Southern California Performing Arts Center Master Plan, Los Angeles, California

Mark was co-project architect for design development through construction drawings for the $14.5 million addition to the existing aquarium. The program for the 45,000 sf project included a new entry plaza with ticketing, queuing & outdoor exhibits, new entry hall, restaurant, gift shop, and temporary exhibit space. Senior Designer.

Our scope of work included needs assessment, user workshops, preliminary programming, cost analysis, financial modeling, concept sketches and concept narrative. The 95,000 sf, $60 million center will include a 1,200-seat concert hall, 500-seat dramatic theater, a large lobby/gallery space for gathering and exhibits, two significant rehearsal rooms, performer and technical support spaces and other audience amenities. Senior Designer. University of Southern California, Raubenheimer Music Building Program, Concept Design, Los Angeles, California Commissioned by the University of Southern California and the Flora L. Thornton School of Music to create a phased Master Plan for renovations to Raubenheimer Hall the current home of the Thornton School of Music. The primary purpose of this master plan study was to observe and evaluate the major spaces on the ground floor of Raubenheimer Hall and make recommendations to USC for improvements to the aesthetics, acoustics, operations, performance systems, equipment and the overall “front door” image of the Raubenheimer building. University of Southern California Bovard Auditorium, Los Angeles, California

SmithGroupJJR provided full architectural services (feasibility study through construction) for the $7.3 million renovation of the historic Bovard Auditorium, located at the center of the main campus in the Bovard Administration Building.The new 1,300-seat Auditorium is used for wide variety of events, including the USC Symphony Orchestra, theatrical performances, lectures and campus convocations. Development study for a 2.5 acre parcel. Team is tasked with evaluating a variety of parking, office and amenity uses for a parcel near a client’s main property in Los Angeles. Team developed 120,000 sf media office building with parking to validate needs and relationship of new parking to existing property. Currently under development. Project Manager/Project Designer. Battlestations 21 Training Facility, Great Lakes, Illinois

Design/build team with programming, planning and design services for a 151,000 sf training facility, which is a realistic experience for Navy recruits as part of their basic training program. The facility contains a 3/5 scale replica of an Arleigh-Burke class destroyer, and 13 high-tech, special effects laden scenarios which provide rigorous simulations of crisis and training situations which could be expected in a combat event.
