Matt Littrell, Marist pitching star, commits to Monmouth University by Patrick Villanova - The Jersey Journal

A staple of the Marist baseball team’s pitching rotation since his freshman year, Matt Littrell hopes to carry over his success from the scholastic level to the collegiate ranks. The hard-throwing right-hander committed to Monmouth University last week, picking the West Long Branch school over Penn State, Marist, George Washington and Louisiana Monroe. “Me and the coaches really connected. I liked it as soon as I got there,” said Littrell, who went 4-6 with a 1.95 earned run average for Marist as a junior last season. “I just felt Monmouth was the best fit. In three seasons in blue and yellow, the Bayonne resident has produced a 19-9 record, a 1.71 cumulative ERA and 195 strikeouts. While his fastball was once clocked at 88 miles per hour, Littrell said, it’s been the recent development of a cutter that has made the junior an even more formidable pitching prospect. Littrell played a crucial role on the Royal Knights team that won both the Hudson County Tournament title and NJSIAA Non-Public B state championship in 2012. Just a sophomore, Littrell pitched Marist past St. Peter’s Prep in the county final, and then delivered four innings of stout relief in the Royal Knights’ 11-10 victory over Newark Academy in the state championship game. He finished the season with a 9-1 ledger. “In my years at Marist, I think Matt is probably the most dominant kid we’ve had,” said Marist baseball coach Ron Hayward. “He was always there for us when we needed him in crunch time. He’s a gamer, whenever you need him he’ll step up.” “Just loving the game,” Littrell said when asked about his mental toughness. “As a kid I always loved baseball. As I got older I realized that you’re always going to go through your ups and downs as a pitcher. You have to dig in in (bad) situations and help your team.” Monmouth, a member of the Northeast Conference, went 30-24-1 last season.

D’Ondre Robinson and Stephen Harper selected as Football Players of the Year Congratulations to Senior D’Ondre Robinson ’14 for being selected as the Varsity Football (13-14) Offensive & Overall Player of the Year in New Jersey. Also, Sophomore Stephen Harper ’16 was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year as well. The Royal Knights are young and we are looking forward to the future under first year coach Juan Garcia. Let’s go Knights.
