Tasmania’s future starts here
Meeting the climate challenge by supporting Australia's energy transition
Providing access to the lowest-cost, most reliable power for customers
Supporting growth and stronger, more resilient communities
Creating new jobs and a pipeline of industry for the future
Marinus Link
Marinus Link is a proposed electricity and data cable that will further connect Tasmania to the mainland.
It will enable Tasmania to import the lowestcost renewable energy, such as solar, while reserving our hydro and storing the extra energy to use or sell when the price is right.
Marinus Link will secure Tasmania’s place in the renewable energy transition, paving the way for economic growth, job opportunities, and sustainable development.

Change is coming
We are part of the biggest shift the energy sector has ever seen.
Global conflict, escalating energy prices and a world-wide movement to counter climate change has resulted in an unprecedented demand for clean energy and the materials we need to generate it.
Australia has a target of net zero emissions by 20502
Australia is making progress combating climate change and securing energy for our future prosperity. Our governments are committed to it. But there is more to be done.

The time to act is now
The way we generate and distribute electricity across the nation is changing. Fossil fuels will play a much smaller role, with coal use ending entirely.
Renewable generation, such as wind, solar and hydro, is becoming a bigger part of our energy mix, helping to keep power prices lower in the future.
Solar and wind are the lowest-cost forms of renewable energy, while hydro’s value comes from storing energy - answering that critical question: what happens if the wind doesn’t blow or the sun doesn’t shine?
Marinus Link will allow us to combine the benefits of solar, wind and hydro, giving Tasmanians the lowest possible power prices and giving new industries the energy confidence to establish in Tasmania.
Australia has a target of 82% renewable energy into the National Electricity Market by 20304
Coal is being phased out much faster than forecast3

Tasmania’s energy supply
Marinus Link will provide energy security for Tasmania for generations to come.
Tasmania has a growing population and our current renewable energy supply will not meet demand.
Without Marinus Link, we would more than likely have to resort to gas, risking Tasmania’s green credentials.
Two-way transmission with the mainland enables access to the lowest-cost solar and wind generation, and unlocks hydro storage capability. This will secure energy supply at a price we’re unable to match on our own.
Marinus Link will help ensure we’ll have access to power at the lowest cost, even when there are events beyond our control such as drought or a Basslink outage.

A bright future for us all
Marinus Link is about more than keeping the lights on.
In delivering a reliable, secure energy supply and stronger data connections, Marinus Link allows us to attract investment in renewable energy generation, data centres and new industries.
In addition to the jobs created during the development and construction of Marinus Link, we can expect thousands more as a result of growing our industries.
If we want our state to prosper, Marinus Link is the place to start.
