New Products Check out our new technology to see why Seajet gives you the edge . . . SEAJET’s winning performance in tests around the world, shows how effective our technology is. Our anti-fouling technology is slower polishing than many other technologies. This means it is suitable for both yachts and motorboats. 1 Recommended by the world’s yachting press

Chugoku Marine Paints Ltd., who manufacture SEAJET, have been one of the world’s leading marine paint producers for 85 years. A fifth of the world’s shipping tonnage relies on Chugoku products.

Read these extracts from recent test reports:

Practical Boatlife, August 2002, Norway Best Value for Money Award:

“SEAJET (033 Shogun) is the test winner! Here is no or just a little fouling. It doesn’t flake-off much either. In addition the Seajet is easy to apply and clearly the cheapest anti-fouling in the test”.

May 2000

Yachting Monthly recommended SEAJET 033 as “an excellent allround anti-fouling, offering outstanding performance coupled with easy application and all for a reasonable price … It is also likely to last two seasons”

“Easy to use, goes a long way.”

The ultimate anti-fouling – SEAJET 039 PLATINUM SEAJET 039 PLATINUM is based on patented new resin technology from Japan and offers the ultimate performance. It is like nothing else available on the market because we have managed to perfect the control of the self-polishing mechanism. This means SEAJET 039 PLATINUM can last for longer, for three seasons* or more, to reduce your yearly painting. Advantages include: • New patented SPC (Self-Polishing Copolymer) resin gives ultimate performance against fouling • Offers the equivalent performance to the now banned, TBT SPCs (tri-butyl tin self-polishing copolymer) anti-fouling • Apply extra coats for protection for 3 years and beyond • Suitable for the highest fouling areas for all types of boat • Perfect for serious racers, superyachts and blue water cruisers or those who will not settle for less

You can benefit from our research for large ships, leading to superb performance for your boat

These biocides boost performance against weed and slimes, for excellent preformance in estuaries. SEAJET 034 EMPEROR can last for two seasons or more, to reduce your yearly painting. Advantages include: • New biocides for excellent performance against all types of fouling • Colours are pure and bright • Ideal for club racers and motor boats and suitable for high fouling areas • Copper free and no risk of galvanic corrosion on aluminium surface or propellers

For colder temperature waters, there is another saving in using either SEAJET 033 Shogun or SEAJET 034 Emperor Anti-fouling. Due to our slower polishing action, you need less anti-fouling than many equivalent products. Check out the recommended quantity on page 54.

Official suppliers to Nippon Challenge, Japan’s entry for Americas Cup, Seajet marine paints provide class-leading performance – and has won a high reputation in waters that are notorious for high fouling. “I can’t tell you how pleased I have been. We are berthed in a ‘locked’ marina where the temperature is always 1 or 2 degrees warmer than sea temperature, with rapid weed growth. For barnacles it is a constant open season. This summer after applying Seajet 033 we had our usual mid-season lift and – nothing. Just a light slime around the waterline. You have a confirmed customer. Thank you.” Simon Roncoroni, Port Solent

6

Mr Campling applied one coat of the hard anti-fouling, SEAJET 037 Coastal in Spring 2002 and had the following to say, “my boat, a Southerly 95 called Pendragon of Arun, has remained on our exposed mooring which dries for about five hours every tide. I enclosed two photographs (see below) of her as she came out last weekend …The boat next to me has a compete layer of barnacles and another boat with hard racing anti-fouling was totally weed encrusted. Needless to say, I am delighted with the performance of your product”.

“Superb is the only applicable comment. The underwater surface of Bullfrog is very clean with no evidence of weed or barnacle growth. The yacht on the next mooring was used as a control. This had a ‘very well known brand Antifoul’ applied and is substantially fouled.” Rick Bratt, Weymouth Marina (using Seajet 033 Shogun)

4 Innovative Technology Did you know that the Japanese are leading the world in developing high performance anti-fouling paints? With the resources of Chugoku Marine Paints, SEAJET products provide you with the cutting edge technology for you to improve the appearance and performance of your boat.

We research many formulations to bring you the best. The above is one of our test raft facilities for anti-foulings

5 Protect the Environment and Go Faster

• Seajet Speed for the hull • Seajet Peller Clean for propellers, inboards, outboards and stern gear

This year sees the introduction of new, non-toxic alternatives to anti-foulings for the hull and the propeller.

Clin d’Oeil Environment Award (Paris 2002)

SEAJET SPEED

Does your propeller foul? Then use our transparent PELLER CLEAN (containing Seajet Speed) to keep fouling at bay. With PELLER CLEAN, you can now protect your boat from fouling and be kind to marine life.

9

Seajet 039 Platinum and 034 Emperor provides a jump in performance, even compared to Seajet 033 Shogun. This is due to our unique, patented new resin technology, which makes the self-polishing mechanism so predictable over time that we can apply Seajet 039 Platinum to protect for three years or more. 8

Helpline 01692 406 822

Do you hate repainting each year? SEAJET SPEED will last up to three seasons. The higher initial cost of paint is soon paid back compared to a normal high performance anti-fouling, which is repainted every year. And you save all that time and effort!

Are you a racer? The added benefit is for motorboats and serious sailboat racers. Compared to anti-foulings, SEAJET SPEED has a lower frictional resistance through the water. This can help provide that extra bit of speed required to win!

The surface can be wiped clean

We call these Foul-Release Coatings. Fouling normally washes off the non-stick, slippy surface when you are motoring or sailing. For inactive boats and those cruising below 5 knots, a quick wash and sponge off will remove any fouling and make the coating look like new.

Unlike anti-foulings, which use toxic agents in the paint to keep fouling off the hull, these products use silicone to provide an ultra slippy surface, that fouling finds it difficult to adhere to.

Comparative performance testing shows relative performance, where 10 is perfection in all fouling conditions worldwide and 0 is no anti-fouling. Apply 1 extra coat on the waterline and leading edges for a season. Apply 1 extra coat on the waterline and leading edges if the boat is kept in the water all year round. Slime may need to be removed by gentle sponge cleaning or low pressure washing. Fouling conditions can vary. Seajet 034 Emperor is best against slime fouling.

Painting Guide

Anti-fouling your boat

Choosing the anti-fouling to suit your needs

The severity of fouling can vary dramatically depending on temperature, water salinity, water flow, time of year and amount of sunlight. To make the choice easier for you, Seajet Anti-foulings are designed to cope with a wide spectrum of fouling. We have three types of product:

Self-Polishing Anti-fouling – the normal choice This includes Seajet 033 Shogun, Seajet 039 Platinum, Seajet 034 Emperor and Seajet 031 Samurai Anti-fouling. Expect high performance because the surface is constantly eroding, which exposes fresh active compounds (called biocides) to dissuade any fouling from attaching. It is ideal for yachts and motorboats up to 40 knots. This polishing mechanism allows Seajet anti-fouling to last for 2 years or more in normal conditions. Just high-pressure wash to revive them. Seajet 039 Platinum provides a jump in performance, even compared to Seajet 033 Shogun. This is due to our unique, patented new resin technology, which makes the self-polishing mechanism so predictable over time that we can apply Seajet 039 Platinum to protect for three years or more. We also use the latest generation biocides to achieve maximum performance against all fouling types.

12

Helpline 01692 406 822

23

Foul Release Coatings – the racer and environmental friendly choice This includes Seajet Speed and Seajet Peller Clean coatings. These are not anti-foulings but work due to their slippy, non-stick surface, which cleans due to the speed of the boat. Slime may attach but is easily cleaned and removed with a sponge. Seajet Speed is suitable for yachts and motorboats up to 30 knots. The ultra smooth surface can even help reduce drag and increase speed through the water. Expect high performance and easy clean.

Hard Anti-fouling – the budget choice This includes Seajet 035 Hard Racing and Seajet 037 Coastal Anti-fouling. These products do not polish or erode. Instead, the biocide leaches out, like water from a sponge. Expect moderate performance and a more economical price. Their harder consistency makes them suitable for drying moorings. We recommend coating annually. Seajet 035 and 037 is suitable for yachts and motorboats up to 70 knots.

For more details visit www.marinemegastore.com or call 0871 8732404

Question: Is Seajet compatible with my existing anti-fouling? Answer: The good news is that Seajet Anti-fouling is compatible with virtually all anti-foulings. We recommend you use a binder coat of SEAJET 011 on unknown systems or when over-coating hard or insoluble matrix type anti-foulings. Teflon-based anti-foulings can normally be over-coated except for VC17m must be removed. Please refer to the Anti-fouling Compatibility table in the “Painting Guide” section. Question: What preparation is required? Answer: In brief – for underwater areas, lightly wet sand the existing paint and any exposed primer. Touch up using the recommended primer. Check compatibility with existing anti-fouling, as a sealer coat of Seajet 011 may be required. For above-water areas, sand down to a matt finish and remove dust before applying Seajet Varnish or Glosskeep Topcoat. Consult detailed instructions for more info.

22

Question: Can Seajet Anti-fouling be applied to all types of boats? Answer: Yes. Seajet Anti-fouling is hard enough to be applied to motorboats up to 40 knots and even to vessels on a drying berth. Seajet 033 Shogun Anti-fouling will give better anti-fouling performance than any hard anti-fouling.

Round up quantities to the nearest pack sizes. For instance if 4.5 litres is required, order 1 x 21⁄2 litre tin and 3 x 750ml tins. Use all the specified anti-fouling, even if it means applying an extra coat. Any priming or sealing can be done with SEAJET 011 Underwater Primer.

Boat in feet 20 25 30 35 38 40 44 51

Question: How much Seajet Anti-fouling do I need? Answer: Figures in the table below show quantities for two coats for the warmer waters of Southern Europe and the Caribbean. In Northern Europe, we recommend you apply one coat per season, so half the quantity shown below. You need less anti-fouling with SEAJET technology.

But apart from looking unsightly, heavy fouling makes your boat dangerously slow and difficult to manoeuvre in an emergency; which is no fun in heavy weather.

Plankton is most concentrated around our coasts, and in harbours and estuaries, where agricultural run off and water from sewage treatment works provides a rich source of food on which these organisms can thrive. Indeed, plankton is often dense enough to be visible during the day, and can sometimes be seen glowing on really dark nights. Everything in the sea is bathed in this ‘soup’ of living matter, and can become badly fouled within just a few weeks unless protected by an effective anti-fouling.

The seas around our coasts contain a mass of rudimentary animal and plant life forms, all competing for somewhere to live and grow. Known as plankton, these tiny organisms include the larvae of literally billions of barnacles, mussels and other sea creatures, together with seaweed spores from all around the world.

Why use Anti-fouling? Anti-fouling your boat is never much fun, especially in winter. But it’s important if you want to keep your boat’s bottom clean.

For more details visit www.marinemegastore.com or call 0871 8732404

And as if that’s not bad enough, wooden craft can suffer expensive damage from the dreaded marine borers Teredo and Gribble, which can reduce hardwood planking to a pulp in just a few months. All of these problems can be avoided by painting your boat with a top quality anti-fouling: so you can always be sure of maximum speed, minimum fuel consumption and good handling all through the season.

Chugoku Seajet 031, 033, 034 and 039 Self-polishing Anti-fouling is the ideal anti-fouling for glass fibre, wood and steel, and can be used at speeds of up to forty knots! In fact, motor boats owners who’ve traditionally used hard racing anti-fouling will find that Seajet 031, 033, 034 and 039 give better results throughout the season without wearing through.

Helpline 01692 406 822

27

The advanced self-polishing mechanism of Seajet 031, 033 and 034 Anti-foulings mean that only two coats are required for two years protection

Seajet Anti-foulings are also eco-friendly; so you can be sure that it protects the environment as well as your boat. Eventually though, most of the anti-fouling polishes away, and has to be replaced.

The movement of water actually helps to smooth the surface, and constantly exposing a fresh layer of biocide to the outside world. So that Seajet Anti-foulings work just as well at the end of the season as it does at the beginning.

Within just hours of launching, this novel anti-fouling starts to dissolve from the outside, releasing biocide into the water at a carefully controlled rate. But there’s much more to it than this.

How does the Seajet Self-Polishing mechanism work? Chugoku Seajet 031, 033, 034 and 039 are self-polishing (or eroding) antifoulings, which react with seawater to give optimum performance all through the sailing season.

And Seajet has been shown to be highly effective in all climates; from Norway, where it was voted Best Buy by two influential boating magazines, to the warm waters of the Mediterranean, where it’s become one of the most popular brands.

You’ll also need a few basic tools, including a scraper for scraping off any loose paint; some wet or dry paper and sanding blocks to give the bottom a light sand down; a bucket of water for the wet or dry paper; and brushes or a roller for putting your new anti-fouling on. And don’t forget some masking tape to mask off the waterline.

Anodes are best removed before anti-fouling, but if this isn’t possible, they can easily be masked up with some aluminium cooking foil.

Boat inspection After lifting out and scrubbing off, the hull should be closely examined for damage and fouling attachment.

This area was covered by the lifting straps during washing down, and needs to be thoroughly scrubbed to remove all traces of fouling.

Grass, weed and loose paint should be removed using a scraper – with the sharp corners on the scraper rounded off with wet or dry paper to avoid gouging the surface.

Barnacles need more thorough treatment, as their cement contains a hormone, which encourages young Barnacle ‘Spat’ to settle nearby. So after scraping Barnacles off, their remains should be wet sanded until they are no longer visible.

29

Loose paint and blisters should also be removed by scraping back to a sound substrate. Larger areas can be dealt with by slurry blasting. However, most chemical paint strippers should never be used on glass fibre, as they will quickly destroy the protective gel coat.

But the self-polishing nature of Seajet avoids a thick build up of anti-fouling, reducing the need from scraping off. Another benefit is that blue water sailors can apply multiple coats of anti-fouling. Chugoku are a recognized world leader in new anti-fouling technology, which we mainly sell to large ship owners. With our new polishing resin technology used in Seajet 039 Platinum, the polishing mechanism delivers extremely long term performance for three years or more. No one has better technology. Seajet 039 Platinum is an environmentally friendly version of the old TBT (tri-butyl tin) anti-fouling, which worked so well. The new patented resin developed by us in Japan is called a Self-Polishing Copolymer. Combined with the latest marine biocides, this offers fantastic performance and reliability over time and is therefore ideal for blue water sailors, serious racers or those who won’t accept anything less.

28

And don’t paint while wearing a woolly sweater or hat – as the fibres will get onto the paintwork.

Before we start painting Firstly, you’ll need to wear the right clothing. Painting can be a messy job, so you’ll need old clothes or a pair of overalls; rubber gloves; and a hat. We also recommend that you wear a pair of safety glasses, especially when working underneath your boat.

For more details visit www.marinemegastore.com or call 0871 8732404

Osmosis is a common problem on glass fibre boats, and is not usually serious unless the hull is very badly blistered. Small, localised blisters can be often treated by drilling them out with a countersink drill, and then filling the holes with epoxy filler; although this will not provide a permanent cure. Widespread blistering, or large swellings in the gel coat are a more serious matter, and should be dealt with by a professional.

Preparing the Surface

31

Applying Anti-fouling If possible, apply your anti-fouling during late morning or early afternoon in calm, dry weather. Don’t antifoul too late in the day, especially when skies are clear, as the rapid fall in temperature will encourage overnight dew, which will spoil your newly applied paint. Surface moisture when painting will also cause loss of adhesion and peeling.

If you don’t know what anti-fouling was last used on your boat, or the condition of the boat is not ideal, the best solution is to apply a full sealer coat of Seajet 011 Underwater Primer. This will give good adhesion to the following coats

However, for small areas of touch up, or if a single component primer is preferred, apply Seajet 011 Underwater Primer. Observe the correct over coating intervals between each coat – this information is on the tin. Use a brush for small areas or a roller for large areas. But will Seajet anti-fouling be compatible with any anti-fouling that is already on your hull? In most cases it will be. However, there are certain Teflon based anti-foulings, which need to be removed beforehand.

Priming the underwater hull On bare and filled areas, you’ll need to apply touch-ups of primer to ensure good adhesion of the following coats. For a high performance epoxy primer, use Seajet 117 or 118 Epoxy Primers. This is particularly recommended when all the existing paint is removed and full coats of the primer system are required. Seajet 2-pack Multipurpose Epoxy Primers are also designed to seal prepared gel coat on glass fibre boats and is ideal for using on metal keels.

Applying primer

16

For more details visit www.marinemegastore.com or call 0871 8732404

Surface preparation Surfaces to be painted must be clean, dry and free of oil or grease. Bare surfaces must first be primed with a suitable priming scheme, filling between coats with an epoxy profiling filler to make good any undulations.

30

Finally, wash everything down to remove dust.

Propellers can be cleaned with a power drill and wire brush to give a smooth polished finish. The copper in bronze propellers usually keeps most fouling at bay, but a couple of coats of Peller Clean or Seajet 034 anti-fouling can be used in areas where heavy fouling is a problem.

Apart from being safer, the lubricating action of the water means that the job won’t take as long as you might expect.

Anti-foulings must never be dry sanded or burnt off with hot air strippers, as even at the end of a season they will contain toxic chemicals. So wet sanding with fresh water is the only safe answer.

Existing anti-foulings don’t usually need any special preparation, but they can be lightly wet sanded to remove small lumps and ‘blebs’ in the paintwork.

For more details visit www.marinemegastore.com or call 0871 8732404

Before you start painting, put a plastic sheet down to protect the ground, and wet the ground with water to prevent dust rising onto the job. If you’re working on a cold day, keep the paint in a warm place until you are ready to use it. Alternatively, warm the paint by standing in a bucket part filled with hot water. Warm paint is much easier to apply, and gives a much smoother finish.

Apply an extra coat to leading edges …

www.seajetpaint.com

Generally, you should apply two coats of Seajet Anti-fouling and for Seajet 033, 034 and 039, this can last up to 2 seasons in temperate water. It’s a good idea to give an extra coat of anti-fouling at the leading edges of the boat and above the waterline as this is where it faces more water-flow.

Throw away the roller head and clean other equipment in Seajet Thinner A.

As soon as the paint feels ‘tacky’, remove the masking tape before the paint dries hard. This will give you a smoother edge to the paint – and one which doesn’t ‘stand proud’ of the surface.

33

Ready for Launch Your new Seajet anti-fouling can be wait up to six months before re-launching, but you should wait until the next day – any sooner, and there’s a good chance that it’ll polish away too quickly. True colour will be seen after immersion because there may be some colour fade when polishing starts to release the pigments.

… and the waterline

17

For more details visit www.marinemegastore.com or call 0871 8732404

Stir the paint thoroughly with a flat bladed knife. Heavy pigments mean that antifoulings can easily settle. Thinning should not normally be necessary. Don’t use paint direct from the can; put an appropriate amount into a roller tray and replace the lid on the can. This prevents contamination and premature ageing of the main can contents. Mix the paint occasionally during the work; otherwise, the heavy biocides in the anti-fouling can settle to the bottom.

32

Remember to use the recommended quantity of anti-fouling or it may not last the season!

When using a roller, apply the paint in a ‘criss-cross’ pattern as if you were using a brush. This helps spread the paint evenly. Alternatively, get someone else to follow you with a paint pad. Don’t work the pad backwards and forwards; or try to spread it too thinly.

Anti-foulings are best applied with a roller, but keep a brush handy for those awkward areas that are difficult to reach with a roller. Lambs wool rollers hold the most paint, and can quickly cover a large area. But they can leave quite a rough surface, which is not ideal for racing boats. For is smoother finish, use a foam or mohair roller.

Surface preparation

Preparation is the key. Good preparation will result in a beautiful finish. So take your time.

Loose paint should be removed by scraping back to a sound substrate. Larger areas can be dealt with by slurry blasting or mechanical sanding. However, most chemical paint strippers should never be used on glass fibre, as they will quickly destroy the protective gel coat.

Use SEAJET Thinner to remove any grease spots. Then wash and degrease with SEAJET BOAT WASH.

18

Preparation can vary depending on the surface to be coated, so follow our painting specification for specific details of preparation.

35

Sanding is required to obtain a smooth surface and key the surface. Surfaces to be painted must be clean, dry and free of oil or grease. Existing paints need to be sanded to remove small lumps and ‘blebs’ in the paintwork. Flatten back with P180-P280 abrasive paper. Finally, brush off dust and use lint free tack rags to remove remaining traces of dust.

Before we start painting SEAJET topcoats are designed to protect your boat against the elements and keep her looking like new. Where conventional alkyd paints can soon fade and need repainting regularly, SEAJET topcoats provide a longer term solution. The main benefit is that you need to paint less frequently than when using conventional paints. This is due to:

Improved gloss retention Improved colour retention Improved resistance to UV light A tougher, harder surface which is more resistant to knocks and scratches

34

You’ll also need a few basic tools, including a scraper for scraping off any loose paint; some wet or dry paper and sanding blocks to key the surface by sanding down; and brushes or a roller for putting your new paint on. And don’t forget some masking tape to mask off the waterline.

TIP: Don’t paint while wearing a woolly sweater or hat – as the fibres will get onto the paintwork.

So how do we tackle the painting work? Firstly, you’ll need to wear the right clothing. Painting can be a messy job, so you’ll need old clothes or a pair of overalls; rubber gloves; and a hat. We also recommend that you wear a pair of safety glasses.

Note: Repainting interval depends upon the ambient sunlight, which varies around the world. For the Caribbean and Mediterranean, reduce the above figures by half.

Conventional Topcoats – Repainting is required after 1–2 years SEAJET UV VARNISH – Repainting necessary after 2–3 years (or longer) SEAJET UNYTHANE TOPCOAT – Repainting necessary after 2–3 years (or longer) SEAJET GLOSSKEEP TOPCOAT – Repainting is required after 3–5 years (or longer) SEAJET 132 POLYURETHANE TOPCOAT – Repainting is required after 5–10 years

Bare surfaces must first be primed with our recommended priming scheme. This can be different for different surfaces, so please consult our paint specifications for primer recommendations. Fill and fare between coats with an epoxy profiling filler to make good any undulations or damage. We recommend using SEAJET SPEED FILLER for small patch repairs. Consult professionals for larger repairs. Apply the filler with a spatula, making sure the spatula used is twice as wide as the hole to be filled. This reduces low spots. You can sand after only 30 minutes, using 280-320 grade abrasive sand paper. Repeat if required for a perfectly smooth surface. You can overcoat SEAJET SPEED FILLER with any SEAJET primer or topcoat.

36

TIPS: Make sure you pick a dry day. Preferably paint in the morning to avoid evening condensation settling on the surface. You can dampen the ground underneath the boat to avoid dust rising.

Flatten back between coats using 320–400 abrasive paper. Two or preferably three coats will give a long lasting finish.

For ease of application, our finishes are one component and can be applied to any prepared surface. For best results, apply using a short haired roller and lay off with a long haired, high quality, soft bristled brush. Use a criss-cross pattern and always finish the last stroke in the same direction.

Whereas a typical conventional paint will last for 1–2 years before repainting, our high performance topcoats will keep your boat looking like new for longer:

Applying the Finish Coat

TIPS: Two coats of undercoat will give an even better finish. Stir thoroughly before use with a flat blade or stirring stick. Remove sanding dust with a brush and then a lint free tack rag.

Seajet topcoats can be applied directly to existing paint or fibre glass. First rub down to remove any imperfections using 280 then 320 abrasive paper. However to obtain a uniform and consistent colour, an undercoat is recommended. This also acts to seal the filler and prevents moisture being absorbed. SEAJET UNIVERASAL PRIMER UNDERCOAT should be applied and then flattened back using 320 grade abrasive paper.

Wood needs protection to avoid mold or rot setting in. To keep the natural beauty in wood, SEAJET UV VARNISH is designed to resist the elements. Ultra violet light will start to break down normal varnishes, so we have selected special resins and additives which ensure SEAJET UV VARNISH keeps its gloss and appearance over time. For even high UV and scratch protection use Seajet Polyurethane Gloss Varnish. Interiors can be painted with Seajet Satin Varnish. As an alternative use Seajet Teak Oil to enhance the beauty of the wood and give a natural looking finish.

38

TIPS: Once a varnish has been applied, it needs yearly maintenance. We recommend topping the system up with at least one coat per year. Apply varnish with a loaded brush or roller, then brush out firstly across the grain, followed by along the grain. Work a small, one square metre area at a time to avoid it drying before you have finished brushing. Avoid painting varnish when damp or in direct sunlight.

The objective is to achieve a glass like finish. This can only be achieved with multiple coats. So thin the first coat by 50% on bare wood. Thin the second coat by 25%, the third by 10% and then apply additional coats, thinning if necessary by 5%. Apply a total of 7 or 8 coats for a glass like finish. Sand between coats with P320–P400 for a better finish. For interiors, apply two coats of Satin Varnish over Seajet UV Varnish.

For existing varnish in good condition, clean with SEAJET BOATWASH. Wash down with fresh water and let it dry. Flatten back with P280–P320 abrasive paper and clean the surface with a tack rag.

Remove any old varnish layers in poor condition by sanding or stripping. To improve adhesion to the wood, degrease oily woods like pine, by wiping with SEAJET THINNER. Sand the surface with P80–P180 along the grain, followed by P280– P320, until it is very smooth. Some extra effort at this stage will be rewarded with a better quality finish. Remove all dust by thinner wiping and allow to completely dry.

Steel corrodes when exposed to salt and water and for long term performance, it essential to prepare the surfaces well. Abrasive grit blasting or water blasting is recommended to a white metal finish (blast standard Sa21⁄2). Mechanical abrasive discs can be used, but be careful not to polish the surface or adhesion may be affected. Use angle grinders to smooth welds or round sharp edges. Enough primer must be applied to protect the steel against water. So apply all the recommended coats to avoid areas of low film thickness, which will lead to premature breakdown. We recommend a minimum dry film thickness of 225µ (microns or micrometers) of primer for long term protection.

Protecting aluminium is important because it oxidises in air producing white rust. For good long term results, aluminium needs similar protection to steel surfaces. The difference is the initial adhesion primer. Seajet 017 Epoxy Bonding Primer is a high performance primer designed to give excellent adhesion to aluminium surfaces. This is the perfect start for all areas of an aluminium boat and better than using an epoxy primer.

For cast iron and steel keels, follow the same advice for steel in the sections above. For best results on pitted and hand prepared metal, we recommend using Seajet 118 Epoxy Primer instead of Seajet 117 Multipurpose Epoxy Primer. For lead keels, abrade the surface with 80–120 grade wet and dry or emery cloth. Then follow the specification for aluminium in the sections above.

Seajet products will minimise the fouling growth on these areas. These areas receive a lot of punishment due to cavitation, so repainting can be a required yearly, but it is often worth it to improve speed through the water. Our systems are the same for all surfaces, whether bronze, aluminium or plastic.

Your Safety

Your safety is our top priority, so please follow our guidance below to prevent accidents. Protect yourself using the right equipment to avoid skin or eye contact: • Cap or hat • Dust or face mask • Gloves • Boiler suit • Glasses or goggles

Warning Labels

Safety symbols are for your protection. They warn you if a product may be irritating or harmful to you or the environment.

Flammable material Solvents are flammable and may explode. Keep away from naked flames and sparks.

Irritant The material may cause a skin rash.

Harmful The material may cause harm if inhaled, eaten or in contact with the skin.

Harmful to the environment Dispose of waste paint thoughtfully at a recycling centre. Do not throw away as household waste.

Toxic These products can cause harm or even death if they are inhaled, ingested or allowed to penetrate the skin.

Helpline 01692 406 822

53

• Always read the health and safety advice on our labels. • Avoid solvents on your skin. Solvent wiping will degrease your skin and can lead to dermatitis. In case of fire, use a CO2 extinguisher or sand. Water will spread the solvent and the fire. • Always work in ventilated areas. Allow plenty of airflow when painting as the build up of solvent can cause sleepiness and nausea. Wear a suitable respirator if in doubt. • Wet sand anti-foulings because the dust is toxic. • Do not eat or smoke when handling paint. • Handle cans with care and keep sealed. Dispose of waste paint at a recycle centre

How Much Paint to Use You need less anti-fouling using SEAJET technology. This is kind to the pocket and the environment. This is because SEAJET anti-foulings have such highly controlled self-polishing mechanisms. This mechanism provides more efficient release of biocides, which are the chemicals that discourage marine life from attaching. One coat is enough for a season in Northern Europe, even for a motorboat. Use two coats in the warmer waters of Southern Europe and the Caribbean.
