Product description Metawell® is manufactured in a patented production process during which one respectively two thin metal sheets are bonded to one or either side of a corrugated thin metal sheet with a hotmelt glue. Metawell® standard panels are produced in widths of 1250 mm respectively 1500 mm (others on request). Thanks to the continuous production off coils also special lengths can be supplied. Metawell®'s unique structure makes it a very light but nevertheless extremely rigid

metal sandwich panel which allows for considerable weight savings particularly when used in big formats. It has also got convincing acoustic and dynamic properties. Since the panels can be painted, coated with films or laminates as well as carpets and other materials all kinds of optical claims can be satisfied. Metawell® panels have various approvals and are fully recyclable.

Marine applications Metawell®'s low weight and its high rigidity make it an ideal semi-finished panel for a wide range of applications in all kinds of vessels. By varying the material thickness of the single panel layers and using different alloys for the cover sheets the panel type can be specified according to its final use, which makes Metawell® suitable for a broad range of applications. Metawell® panels can be supplied cut to size or in the shape that is requested, which helps to reduce labour cost and assembly time at site. For those who prefer to process the panels themselves and for urgent requests standard panels in various lengths are constantly kept on stock.

As purely metal sandwich elements the panels meet the test criteria of the IMO resolution A653.1 and MSC.61(67). Fire approvals (CERTIFICATE OF FIRE APPROVAL foll. IMO FTPC T2 and T5), MED certificates are available for the standard panels. For years Metawell® has been used mainly in cruise liners and fast ferries, but also in smaller fast and patrol boats for: • raised floors • wall linings • ceiling elements • ship furniture

Surfaces Metawell® is an ideal backing for the most different surface materials. There are various alternatives: Paints Primered Metawell® panels are suited for paint-coats since this surface allows for direct painting in many cases without any further pre-treatment (apart from cleaning).

When Metawell® panels are painted the temperature resistance of 100°C has to be respected.

On demand the panel can be supplied with either a spray-painted top sheet - which allows for an individual colouring even of smaller quantities - or, if bigger quantities are involved, with a coil-coated top sheet.

Foils Metawell® can be easily coated with selfadhesive films. Other foils can be applied using e.g. double-sided adhesive tapes.

Flat laminates

Natural stone

Principally all Metawell® panels can be coated with flat laminates. However, when using Metawell® panels with flat laminates, the temperature and humidity conditions which the panels will be exposed to have to be taken into account.

Metawell® panels covered with 3-4 mm thick marble or granite make for a rather exclusive appearance. Their low weight of about 13 kg/m2 is most advantageous especially when bigger-sized panels are required. These panels can be obtained up to a maximum size of 1250 x 2450 mm.

In case considerable variations of ambient temperature and humidity are to be expected, the panels should be laminated on both sides (laminate and counter-move) to avoid deformations because of different material expansions. The type of adhesive used has to match both materials that are bonded.

Carpets and other layers In view of the requirements regarding the compressive strength of floors carpets are mainly used in combination with specially strong Metawell® panels (With stronger floor layers such as wood or tiles, other panel types may be considered). Metawell -panels have low weight compared to solid metal sheets with the same material and rigidity.

Their even surface and high rigidity make Metawell® panels an ideal backing for all kinds of decorative materials (laminates, foils, mirrors, natural stone, carpets).

High rigidity The rigidity of the panel Metawell® Alu hl 05-02-05 hl / H6, with an overall height of 6 mm, is comparable to that of a solid aluminium sheet being 4.8 mm thick but more than three times as heavy.

Good dynamic behaviour All Metawell® panels perform particularly well with vibrations and oscillations. Easy processing Metawell® panels can be cut with traditional tools (see "processing and design tips").

Favourable sizes The continuous manufacturing process off coils allows for a customer-tailored production to the length requested, which helps to reduce the scrap rate. various cover sheet The availability of different surface finishes, thicknesses of cover sheets and heights of corrugation makes it easy to find the most suitable panel type for the individual application. Thus the panel type Alu hl 08-02-05 hl / H5.5 with its 0.8 mm thick primered top sheet is an ideal panel for painted ceiling elements while the panel type Alu cc 08-03-05 hl / H10, thanks to its rigidity, is particularly suited for wall applications.

Temperature resistance Metawell® panels can tolerate temperatures up to +100°C. Airborne sound insulation The values Rw vary between 23 dB and 27 dB depending on the panel type. Approvals The panels have the Lloyd's Register Type approval "Certificate of Fire Approval" and are certified after the Marine Equipment Directive (MED 96/98/EC). Wall linings When using Metawell® panels in big formats the number of horizontal joints in the walls can be reduced. Metawell® Aluflex is the ideal panel for parapet linings and curved parts because it

Installation Hat profile system With the help of hat profiles all kinds of walls can be quickly assembled while leaving the desired flexibility with regard to design and shape. Tolerances may be evened out when adjusting the panels and profiles on the spot. The hat profile system shown is suitable for all Metawell速 panels on condition that Metawell速 Aluflex is additionally stuffed in order to guarantee a sufficient clamping strength.

With this system a cover profile is pinched onto the profile that protects the construction against vandalism. It can be taken off with the right tool if, in case of damage, single panels have to be exchanged. Tongue and groove Panels with an overall height of about 10 mm (e.g. Metawell速 Alu cc 08-03-05 hl / H10) are particularly suited for butt joints with tongue and groove systems. A simple slitting cutter is used to mill e.g. a 4 mm large and 7 mm deep groove into the

middle of the corrugation. Then, a flat aluminium profile in a groove-matching size (here 4 x 12 mm) is stuck into the corrugation. After that the second Metawell速 panel, which shows the same groove on the long panel side, is butt-jointed. 速

The decisive advantage with the Metawell tongue and groove system is provided by the remaining corrugation: By using a 0.3 mm thick aluminium alloy with high yield strength the corrugation ends act like

a strong spring element, which considerably protects the cover sheets in the milled areas. This connection levels out certain tolerances of angle drifts and allows for a tight fit of the profile. If needed the aluminium profile can additionally be fixed with the help of an elastic bond system (e.g. a moisture curing onecomponent system).

Concealed fastening Hook systems Hook systems are ideal for the concealed attachment of Metawell速 wall linings in vessels. Support profiles are fixed to the body structure and levelled. The wall elements are mounted onto the profiles with hooks.

These hooks can be fixed to the panel back with blind rivets. The rivet locks in the space between the panel's two cover sheets with the effect that the visible side of the panel shows no optical impairment.

Corners A special advantage of Metawell® panels fixed with a hat profile is the simple way to form corners. Metawell® single panels with cover sheets of ≥ 0.8 mm thickness, that are milled on their back, can be used as corner elements. Depending on the direction of the folding, inner or outer corners can be formed. Since the folding is done by hand, the corners can be adjusted at site. By milling the panel back different folding radii (depending on the milling geometry) can be realized.

Thus it is possible to level out angle tolerances of the construction almost automatically. Being a purely metal sandwich panel Metawell® possesses very low insulation values. Therefore usually floating insulations are used. The relevant material is inserted between the structure and the Metawell® panels. As there is a clear distinction between the functions "wall lining" and "insulation" the heat and fire insulations can be individually adjusted to the place of use.

Ceiling applications Thanks to their low weight, their evenness and their high rigidity even big-sized ceiling elements out of Metawell® panels require only a light sub-construction. Lights and other fittings such as loudspeakers can often be inserted directly into the panel and need not be additionally suspended. The advantage of a frame design is that a lot of

well-known sub-construction systems and almost any Metawell® panel type can be used. Metawell® panels are particularly well suited for radiant ceilings because of their good heat conductivity. Further information is available on request.

Of course other suspension techniques can be considered with Metawell® panels. Our technical department can help the designer/user to choose the panel type that is best suited for the individual application. To find the most appropriate panel type the following should be considered:

• Metawell® panels with a cover sheet of 0.5 mm thickness are used as substrates for foils and coatings (e.g. rough plaster, spatula technique).

In case no coat is applied on the surface the corrugation may be seen in sidelight ("corrugation shining through") due to the panel structure and the thin cover sheet. • Metawell® panels with an 0.8 mm thick or even thicker cover sheet are used for panels that are colour-coated or folded. The panel type Alu hl 08-02-05 hl / H5.5 has an optically even surface which thanks to the primer - is an ideal substrate for most types of paintings.

Raised floors Thanks to their rigidity and their specific purely metal structure Metawell® panels are particularly well suited for the use in raised floors and platforms.

Usually one Metawell® panel covers several fields of the sub-construction, which helps to reduce assembly cost and time.

There are several Metawell® panels that can be considered for floors applications. The choice of the panel type depends on the compressive strength that is requested in view of the point loads and on the maximum weight the total construction is allowed to have.

In view of its higher compressive strength the Metawell® panel Alu hl 10-03-10 hl / H6 is particularly suited for floor areas which are constantly frequented and covered only by carpet.

Load assumptions Usually floor panels are dimensioned following the expected areas loads. The standard loads assumed are 300 kg/m2 and 500 kg/m2.

As basis for dimensioning calculations the following load cases are assumed: • area load 300 kg/m2 • point load 100 kg in the centre The panels' performance with other loads can be determined by calculation. The point load is not simulated as mere point load in the literal sense of the word but spread onto a circle with a diameter of 60 mm ("shoe contact area").

But considering area loads alone is mostly not sufficient for practical use as the subjective feeling of the "user" is also very important. In order to get as close as possible to the real application, the point loads in the centre of the panels, which appear e.g. by walking on the panel, must not be neglected.

Point loads in the middle of the panel usually present the worst load case.

Any superstructural parts and furniture should be fixed directly to the substructure in order to avoid point loads. Compressive strength The compressive strength that is requested for floor panels is strongly dependent on the utilization itself and the individual floor covering. In view of the compressive strength the panel type Alu hl 10-03-10 hl / H11.5 should be considered for floors without high point loads only or for floor areas that are fitted with a strong floor covering (e.g. parquet). For normally stressed floor areas with thin floor coverings (e.g. carpet) the panel Metawell® Alu hl 10-03-10 hl / H6 should be used.

Grid distance of the substructure The grid distance is dependent on the bending moment that is allowed and the total construction. Preferably the most economic use of the chosen panels (favourable formats to avoid scraps) should be taken into account, too. Therefore the subsequent examples are based on panel widths that can be produced out of MetawellÂŽ panels with as little waste as possible. Of course, rectangular grids can be used as well. Support of the panels It is only theoretically possible to fix a floor panel absolutely firmly (see case 'a'). Even when the panels are screwed to the substructure, there is some rotation movement. For any further study it therefore seems more reasonable to take case 'b' as

a model in order to have the requested safety regarding the deflection. If a panel covers several fields, the deflection is about 10 to 20% less. Limits for the deflection Floor panels are usually dimensioned respecting the following limits: â&#x20AC;˘ deflection < 0.5% of the smallest edge length (L/200) or â&#x20AC;˘ deflection < 1.5 mm The smaller of the above values should be assumed as maximum deflection allowed so that the yielding of the panel is not felt by those who walk on it. Deflection diagrams The deflection diagrams attached hereafter are valid for "area loads of 300 kg/m2" and "point loads of 100 kg in the centre of the panel" for a panel that is supported on all four sides with a support width of 25 mm. The data may serve as guidelines only. It is strongly recommended to make tests subject to the individual application parameters, as the support conditions and floor coverings vary from application to application, which makes a merely mathematical assessment impossible. All particulars are given without obligation; errors and modifications are reserved.

Notes regarding the design The following design examples refer to the two standard cases: • floor with area load (300 kg/m2) • floor with area load (500 kg/m2) Since the loads enter linearly into the deflection of the panels it is no problem to project the deflection with other loads than those shown in the diagrams.

However, conferring with the plant is recommended in case different grid distances are used. The subsequently described applications assume a twistable support as this case is nearer to reality than the non-twistable support. The thus determined deflections are therefore safe. They do not contain any further safety factor.

This Metawell® panel type in size 1500 mm x 3000 mm can cover nine grid fields.

• load: surface load 300 kg/m2

With a grid width of 500 mm the deflection diagram of Metawell® Alu hl 10-03-10 hl / H6 (page 43) shows a deflection of about 1.1 mm for a surface load of 300 kg/m2. Thanks to the supporting effect of the neighbouring panel fields the real deflection may be expected to be even lower.

• flooring: carpet (approx. 6 mm) • grid width: 500 x 1000 mm • support width: 25 mm • deflection: < 1.5 mm With carpet as floor covering the compressive strength of the stage floor depends solely on the floor panel. In view of the expected point loads (e.g. stiletto heels) the panel Metawell® Alu hl 10-03-10 hl / H6 should be taken because of its better compressive strength.

Design example 2: Given conditions for a raised restaurant floor with parquet flooring:

• load: surface load 500 kg/m2 • flooring: parquet (design free) • grid width: 750 x 750 mm • support width: 25 mm • deflection: < 1.5 mm The floor's compressive strength is ensured by the parquet covering. That is why the panel type Metawell® Alu hl 10-03-10 hl / H11.5 can be used. The support performance the parquet has been neglected for the calculation because of its rigidity - a mathematical statement would be extremely difficult - that means that the calculated design always contains some "safety".

Diagrams for a surface load of 500 kg/m2 are not available, but thanks to the linear influence of the load the deflection can be projected with the factor 500/300. With a surface load of 300 kg/m2, a grid width B of 750 mm and a grid length L of 750 mm the deflection diagram of Alu hl 10-03-10 hl / H11.5 (page 46) shows a deflection of approx. 0.6 mm. Multiplied with the factor 500/300 the deflection to be expected is approx. 1.0 mm with a surface load of 500 kg/m2. Thanks to the supporting effect of the neighbouring panel fields the real deflection may be expected to be even lower.
