Modern and Classic Boatbuilding

“Before the days of GRP boatbuilding, people could go direct to almost any boatyard and commission the boat of their choice. Nowadays there is very little opportunity to do this. Our mission at Cockwells is to bring back this service to those who appreciate fine vessels and a high level of craftsmanship. Individuals who come to us are looking for something different we make sure they do not have to compromise. Dave Cockwell

The Company Cockwells specialises in building and restoring classic yachts, both power and sail. Dave Cockwell, master shipwright and founder of Cockwells, has dedicated his working life to building and restoring wooden boats. After several years of running his business at Underfall Yard in Bristol, in 2002 he and his wife Jo moved to Cornwall where they set up Cockwells Modern and Classic Boatbuilding in Falmouth.

The Cockwells Team Our staff are selected not only for their high levels of skill and expertise but also for their enthusiasm and commitment to what we do.

All our skilled craftsmen have a lifelong passion for traditional, bespoke methods; each has knowledge and experience all but lost in the modern boatbuilding industry. At Cockwells we combine these skills with state-ofthe-art engineering and modern boatbuilding techniques to create truly uniqueorresults. Both in the workshop and the office our dedicated team work closely together to deliver beautiful vessels individually designed and meticulously finished. Apprenticeships At Cockwells we are committed to training. We believe that wooden boatbuilding is a contemporary and relevant skill which must be passed on to future generations. We run a four-year apprenticeship programme providing young people with hands-on training working alongside our skilled shipwrights. We see this as a crucial part of our company’s development.

Saw Mill and Timber Supply At Cockwells, quality control begins at the source. Historically boatbuilders would always store and saw wood they required on site. Learning from this tradition and with the support of Working Woodlands, Cockwells invested in a Forrester 150 sawmill, which is capable of cutting 1.5 metre diameter lumber up to 15 metres in length. Dave Cockwell now personally sources all the timbers used in the yard both locally and further afield. Timber is selected both in rounds and standing trees and transported to our farm in Cornwall where it is seasoned until ready for use.

Scottish Boatskin Larch, Opepe and English Oak is stored ready for selection for planking, keels and frames. This old-fashioned approach enables us to guarantee the quality of our raw materials and allows us to select perfect timbers so the natural grain of the wood then matches the contours of the vessel. Cockwells is also a timber supplier to other boatbuilders and amateurs alike, both locally and further afield.

“A boat builder who stands out from the crowd. Dave Cockwell is different for all the right reasons.”

Sustainability Cockwells’ tree planting scheme is operated in conjunction with The Silvanus Trust. The scheme ensures that, every year, in Cornwall, we plant a minimum of five times the number of trees we use. The trees are planted in sustainably managed woodlands and our hope is that in 100 years from now some of them will still be around to support boatbuilders of the future, whilst in the meantime they enhance our local environment and help to reduce atmospheric CO2.
