CHAIRMAN’S LETTER
LETTER FROM GENERAL GARY THOMAS, USMC (RET)

I would like to thank each of you for supporting our mission to preserve and share the history, culture, traditions and virtues of our Marine Corps. Our Corps’ legacy continues to live on here at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and through programs beyond its walls, and you have made it all possible. Your generosity allowed us to achieve our goals this year.
The Foundation intends to make sure all Americans understand the tremendous contribution that the Marine Corps makes in defense of our nation.
One major initiative that you made possible is the expansion of Semper Fidelis Memorial Park adjacent to the National Museum of the Marine Corps. The expansion will nearly double the length of the current ADA compliant pathways creating space for more bricks, more monuments and more Rally Point locations, providing our visitors even more opportunities to learn about Marine Corps history and the sacrifices made to protect the freedom of our Nation.
The park expansion includes the construction of the Semper Fidelis Memorial Park Pavilion. The pavilion’s footprint and landscape design will evoke the image of a senior enlisted rank insignia in the Marine Corps. The pavilion is made possible through the generous contributions of Marine veteran, distinguished entrepreneur, visionary leader, and philanthropist Tim Day, his wife Sandy Day, and the Timothy T. Day Foundation. Another feature of the park expansion is the exciting new addition of a Marine Corps Medium Girder Bridge (MGB), a lightweight bridge that is assembled without help from heavy equipment. This bridge could very well be the final MGB ever built as the Marine Corps has recently divested itself of its bridge-building capabilities. The park expansion will open to the public in Spring 2024.
The Foundation has also been hard at work planning the celebration for the Marine Corps 250th Anniversary in 2025. One of the ways we will mark this occasion is to mint a commemorative coin in honor of the 250th anniversary. Thanks to your support with this grassroots effort, it is now official.
In July, President Biden signed into law the 250th Anniversary of the United States Marine Corps Commemorative Coin Act. Through these coins, all Americans will be able to honor Marines for their 250 years of unwavering dedication to duty, service and sacrifice for our Nation. Proceeds from coin sales will support future educational, historical and cultural programs at our National Museum as we look ahead to preserving and honoring the next 250 years of Marine Corps history. Watch your email and our website for updates on purchasing these coins in 2025.
We are also working on a new campaign called From the Few for the Marine Corps’ 250th that will share our legacy with all Americans in a brandnew way. The campaign will bring the Corps’ story closer than ever to the American people. Much work remains between now and 2025, and we will need your continued support to make this possible. None of this important work would be possible without the generous support and steadfast dedication of you, our donors. Every gift helps us tell the proud history of our Corps, preserve the legacies of all Marines, and honor the sacrifices that these brave men and women have made to protect our nation. Thank you. I know we can count on your continued support in 2024.
Semper Fidelis,
General
Gary Thomas,
USMC (Ret) Chairman, Marine Corps Heritage Foundation

PRESIDENT’S LETTER
LETTER FROM MAJGEN JAMES W. LUKEMAN, USMC (RET)

The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation had another successful year thanks to the continued support of donors like you. Your steadfast commitment and generosity are the reason we are able to fulfill our mission of sharing the legacy of our brave Marines and their families. Throughout 2023, the Foundation honored and celebrated our Corps’ history through a variety of initiatives, programs and events here at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and beyond its walls.
Our 2023 Annual Awards Ceremony, held in April, honored Marines and civilians for their exemplary work in advancing and preserving Marine Corps history, traditions and culture in various fields. We presented the Honorable Richard V. Spencer, former Secretary of the Navy and past MCHF Vice Chairman of the Board, with the Heritage Award and Sergeant Thomas J. Brennan USMC (Ret), founder of the nonprofit newsroom The War Horse, with the Lieutenant General John A. Lejeune Recognition for Exemplary Leadership Award. They received their awards alongside 18 other honorees who were recognized for excellence in journalism, literature,
photography, videography and the arts. We are looking forward to another terrific event at the Museum with our 2024 Annual Awards Ceremony this spring.
We are proud of the programs we support at the Museum, particularly the Education Department programs that reach beyond the Museum’s walls and into classrooms and homes across the Nation. The Foundation employs two full-time public school teachers who teach classes and made it easier for schools and over 8,000 students to access the Museum’s resources this year alone.

Our redesigned virtual tour that launched in Spring 2023 has been an invaluable resource for all, taking the Museum beyond its walls using state-of-the-art technology. We continue to enhance the virtual experience with additional artifact descriptions, expanded details and links to related artifacts for many of its exhibits. Once you see the Museum virtually, you will really want to come see it in person.
Additionally, the Foundation oversees the Medal of Honor Theater, Museum Store, Tun Tavern, Devil Dog Diner and the laser simulated Rifle Range. In 2023, Tun Tavern offered weekly specials, weekly Happy Hours and events like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Brunches. The Medal of Honor Theater continues to show our signature film We, the Marines as well as offers visitors alternative films like the familyfriendly film Max, the documentary The Gift that tells the story of Medal of Honor recipient Corporal Jason L. Dunham, and various holiday films with a free Cookies, Cocoa and Craft event for kids. The newly renovated Rifle Range continued to bring in visitors and groups to test their marksmanship in the Museum’s Making Marines gallery – even the Foundation and Museum staff teamed up to compete in a friendly group tournament competition!
Our team has been hard at work with two major initiatives this year – the expansion of Semper Fidelis Memorial Park that will nearly double the footprint of the current park and the Traveling Combat Art Exhibit. The traveling exhibit has been so successful
at raising the public’s awareness for the Marine Corps and its contributions to the Nation that a second traveling art show is in the works, this time with entirely different Marine Corps art. We hope to get this on the road in 2024 through 2026. Stay tuned!
The Foundation hosted two Virtual Town Hall events in 2023 to better connect with you, our supporters. I enjoyed answering your questions and keeping you up-to-date on happenings at the Foundation and National Museum of the Marines Corps. We look forward to continuing to grow this program and hope you’ll join us for the next one.
I’m proud to be a part of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation and the great work we continue to do. It goes without saying that everything we do here at the Foundation to preserve and share the history, traditions, and culture of the Marine Corps is only possible because of your contributions. Your support makes a difference. Thank you. I look forward to what we can accomplish together in 2024.
Semper Fidelis,
MajGen James W. Lukeman, USMC (Ret) President & CEO, Marine Corps Heritage Foundation

MARINE CORPS HERITAGE FOUNDATION YEAR IN REVIEW
The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation hosted and supported another full year of programming and events at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and beyond its walls. Here is a look at our year in review.

TRAVELING COMBAT ART EXHIBITION

The Traveling Combat Art Exhibition titled “Honor, Courage, Commitment: Marine Corps Art, 1975-2018” completed its tour in 2023 with stops at the Turtle Bay Exploration Park in Redding, California from January to April and The George H.W. Bush Presidential Library & Museum in College Station, Texas from May to January. Featuring over thirty works of art by 15 combat artists, the exhibit focused on the Marine Corps following the Vietnam War through today. The 34 works on canvas and two sculptures provided a window into the experiences of the artists, many of whom saw active combat. A second traveling art show is in the works of different Marine Corps art with plans to begin its tour in 2024 through 2026.
2023 STUDENT CONCERTO COMPETITION
Seven exceptional high school students gathered in February in John Philip Sousa Band Hall at the Marine Barracks Annex in Washington, D.C. before a live audience and a panel of judges for the final round of the Marine Band’s 2023 Concerto Competition. The annual event was hosted by “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band with scholarships provided by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. The first place winner received a $2,500 scholarship and second and third place winners received $1,000 and $500 respectively.

Ruth Johnson successfully won a Marine Band French horn audition on March 7, 1973, and went on to become the first female to enlist in “The President’s Own.” Marine Band Director Lt. Col. Dale Harpham explained his decision to enlist Johnson: “At the time, there were no legal ramifications against admitting women. I wanted to see this happen because I wanted the “Marine Band” to be the best.” Weeks later the Marine Corps announced job opportunities for women in each of its bands, and in 1975 many more occupational fields throughout the Corps were opened to women.

The free outdoor concerts series drew in over 2,500 attendees from the local community making it the Foundation’s most successful concert series to date.

NEW VIRTUAL TOUR
The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation continues to find innovative ways to connect people with the rich history and traditions of the United States Marine Corps. One of the most remarkable achievements of the year was the development and launch of a new Virtual Tour of the National Museum of the Marine Corps. This digital experience brings the Museum’s exhibits and Marine story directly to people’s homes, schools, and devices.
The Director of Visitor Experience led this endeavor to bring together the work of Marine Corps University’s curators, historians and archivists with technology experts not to replicate or replace the Museum, but enhance the Museum’s ability to reach more individuals. The virtual tour was designed to provide visitors with an engaging and informative journey through the Marine Corps legacy, allowing them to dive deeper into the history, traditions, and culture of our Corps.

The MCHF’s Virtual Tour of the National Museum of the Marine Corps is a multifaceted project that is set to redefine how the Marine Corps’ history is shared with the world. Using cutting-edge technology, this digital experience offers a lifelike visit to the museum without leaving the comfort of one’s home.
Visitors can navigate through the Museum’s various galleries, just as they would in person, by using a user-friendly interface. They can move through the Museum chronologically or jump to specific points within the galleries for more targeted exploration. High-quality imaging technology captures every current exhibit in remarkable detail, making it feel like you are actually there, but this virtual tour goes beyond just static displays. Visitors can access detailed information about artifacts, view high-resolution images, and even access audiovisual content to enhance their understanding of Marine Corps’ history.
With links to extensive information and resources, from the USMC & MCU, it offers an in-depth look at the Marine Corps’ contributions. Further expanding upon the educational capabilities of the Virtual Tour, is a unique tool, the Collection Finder. Serving as a digital catalog, the Collection Finder enables users to search for specific artifacts within the Museum’s vast collection. Users can search by keyword, time period, category and more to find artifacts, detailed descriptions, and even related artifacts.

THE SEMPER FIDELIS MEMORIAL PARK TRAIL EXTENSION, ALONG WITH ITS HISTORIC MEDIUM GIRDER BRIDGE (MGB), A LIGHTWEIGHT BRIDGE THAT IS ASSEMBLED WITHOUT HELP FROM HEAVY EQUIPMENT, ARE EXPECTED TO BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC IN SPRING 2024.

SEMPER FIDELIS MEMORIAL PARK
The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation installed over 1,300 new commemorative bricks in Semper Fidelis Memorial Park on the grounds adjacent to the National Museum of Marine Corps, for a total of over 41,000 memorial bricks throughout the Park presently.
In May, the Foundation provided visitors an opportunity to place miniature American flags throughout the pathways of Semper Fidelis Memorial Park in honor of Memorial Day. The effort was such a success visitors were invited to line the Park with American flags for Veteran’s Day in November. Nearly 500 American flags were displayed during both occasions.
Throughout the year, construction work continued as part of the Semper Fidelis Memorial Park Expansion project. Concrete for the pillars on the new pavilion were poured and stonework began. Progress was made on grading the pathways and installing storm drains throughout the expansion.
In August, work began for the Semper Fidelis Memorial Park Pavilion. Benches will be spaced for quiet reflection, while the pavilion’s interior will offer a serene vantage point with a tranquil panorama of the National Museum of the Marine Corps and its encompassing grounds. In October, the installation of a historic Medium Girder Bridge (MGB) was completed.

VIRTUAL TOWN HALLS
In 2023, the Foundation introduced a new virtual town hall series that gave supporters timely updates for the Foundation and National Museum of the Marines Corps as well as an opportunity to ask Foundation President & CEO questions in real time. In February, attendees heard from guest speaker Lin Ezell, former director of the National Museum of the Marines Corps and curator of the Traveling Art Exhibit. Attendees got a behind the scenes look at a few artifacts held in the Marine Corps Secure Weapon Storage Facility from the Museum’s Arms and Armor Curator Jonathan Bernstein. Additional virtual town halls are being planned for 2024.
CLASSIC CAR SHOWS
New in 2023, the Foundation hosted two classic car shows in the parking lot of the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Over 1,700 visitors gathered to see antique cars in May with a special performance by the United States Navy Band Commodores. This gathering was one of the highest Sunday visitor counts the Museum has had post pandemic. A second antique car show was hosted in October with attendance numbers over 1,300.

SPECIAL TOUR
In February, Foundation staff visited Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1), on Marine Corps Base Quantico, for a behind the scenes tour to learn more about the different aircraft used within the Marine Corps and their maintenance.

PRIVATE EVENTS
Throughout 2023, the Foundation’s Events team managed over 300 private events including weddings, promotions, retirements and other celebrations in the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel and the Medal of Honor Theater. Hear from a few of our clients on what hosting an event at the Museum meant to them.
The National Museum of the Marine Corps is a very special part of our story. My husband and I met while working at the museum; he was stationed there and I worked as a photographer and videographer. We would often walk the trails through the Semper Fidelis Memorial Park to the Chapel. When the time came to choose the venue for our special day, we had our heart set on the Museum. Working with the MCHF events staff was a delight. They worked quickly and efficiently to make our wedding day very special and memorable.
- Jennifer Bass on her wedding
“When you have to say a final farewell to a great Marine, there is no better place to assemble and pay tribute than the National Museum of the Marine Corps. The superiority of the setting is obvious, but less obvious (unless you’ve experienced it) is that the Special Events staff hosts an event like they are part of the family— very attentive, professional, and caring. I and the other guests were equally impressed with the catering by Aramark, simply first class. I, and the many guests who attended the celebration of life, are very grateful for the flexibility, dedication, and high standards that the Special Events staff paid to our event.”
- LtGen G.S. Newbold, USMC (Ret) on a celebration of life

EXHIBITS BRANCH
The Exhibits Branch provided in-house fabrication and installation for the “New to the Collection” art, Go to War…Do Art exhibit, Beirut bombing anniversary exhibit, and a massive change-out of graphics and artifacts of the Legacy Walk Timeline. Other projects started this year include designs for a modification to the Korean War Gallery to include the topic of Women Marines, and a permanent display area at the base of the mast in Leatherneck Gallery. YEAR IN REVIEW
Installation of the 24,000 square foot post-Vietnam galleries, Galleries 13 and 14, made remarkable progress. Remaining artifact display cases were installed and wired for lighting and environmental monitoring, and the case security system was installed and commissioned. Progress continued on an exhibit of Marine sea-based deployments during the 2000s. Custom-fitted artifact mount fabrication began for the 600+ artifacts that will be on display, and work continued on the hand-sculpted and painted finishes on the tableaus. Installation of artifacts into cases has begun, the theatrical exhibit lighting is underway, and by the close of FY2023, the exhibit installation was substantially complete.

COLLECTIONS BRANCH
The Collections Branch is responsible for curating and preserving the material history of the Marine Corps and consists of the Collections Management Section and the Office of the Registrar, the Restoration Section, and the Curatorial Section.
ARMS & ARMOR
The Arms & Armor (A&A) Curator provided subject matter expertise to numerous commands, museums, writers, researchers, and the public, and authored articles for Leatherneck magazine. A&A additions to the collection include an M1944 carbine captured by a Marine from F Company, 2d Battalion, 5th Marines in January 1969 north of Hue City; and a Marine Corps Officer’s sword identified to LtCol Samuel B. Puller, General Puller’s brother who was KIA on Guam in July 1944. A&A also worked alongside StratComm for the filming of an episode of Gun Stories, featuring Marine Corps sniper rifles and hosted by actor Joe Mantegna.
ART
Many of the Art Curator’s efforts have been directed toward the conservation of all artifacts, historical furniture, and artwork in the Home of the Commandants. Additionally, noteworthy FY2023 art acquisitions include 145 works from the estate of John Deckert and a mixed media painting titled Shoulder to Shoulder by Peter G. Varisano, Army Artist during Operation Desert Shield.

AVIATION
The Aviation Curator presented 13 collections as well as one deaccession recommendation to the Collections Committee. Significant additions include the first VH-3D Presidential helicopter stricken from service; the flight helmet worn by then-Capt Timothy B. Howard during his service in Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada; and a large collection of flight and personal gear belonging to World War II Marine John R. Stanton, a F4U Corsair pilot who served on Okinawa in 1945.
CULTURAL AND MATERIAL HISTORY
The Cultural and Material History (C&MH) section recommended 30 collections with more than 260 artifacts for inclusion in the NMMC’s permanent collection. Significant artifacts added to the collection by the C&MH Curator include: an original painted drum from the 1952 parade season of Commandant’s Own, the Drum and Bugle Corps; a collection of items associated with Marine Barracks Washington mascot Chesty XV; and a USMC contract 1913 Dietz Cold Blast Model No. 2 lantern. The C&MH Curator wrote several “Saved Rounds” for Leatherneck magazine and supported several loans of artifacts to the Gerald Ford Presidential Library and Museum, the Marine Corps Embassy and Security Guard Battalion, the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum, and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. UNIFORMS AND HERALDRY
Uniforms and Heraldry (U&H), the most active curatorial discipline at the NMMC, accessioned 27 collections with 300+ individual artifacts in FY2023. Most notable was the acquisition of a Civil War enlisted uniform that was facilitated through and funded by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation (MCHF). This extraordinarily rare uniform represents the most complete Civil War collection ever added to the NMMC. The MCHF also generously funded the purchase of items associated with Col A. F. Moe, a World War II-era officer who served with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in the China Burma India theatre.
Additional acquisitions include valor medals from the surviving daughter of Iwo Jima casualty Robert Lewis Stallings; a symbolic dress uniform from KIA Marines of Operation Enduring Freedom; a World War II Navy Cross from the surviving daughter of PFC Warren Welch; and a Vietnam War Medal of Honor from Cpl William Morgan. NMMC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

Over the course of 2023, the Education Department, Distance Learning, and the Teachers in Residence (TIR) provided a wide variety of in-person and online programs designed for all ages to engage with the rich history of the United States Marine Corps. Through the efforts of the entire Education Branch, Museum education programs reached over 45,000 visitors, our highest attendance since before the COVID-19 Pandemic. Museum education programs, both in-person and online, continue to grow and celebrate the legacy of the United States Marine Corps.

HISTORY TRUNK PROGRAMS
Through history trunk programs, the Museum’s Teachers in Residence can take the National Museum of the Marine Corps into local classrooms. The Museum’s history trunk programs connect the history of the United States Marine Corps with the Virginia Standards of Learning curriculum at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The NMMC trunk programs utilize replica artifacts that correspond with major conflicts in American history, giving students hands-on opportunities to interact with the history of the Marine Corps. NMMC trunk programs combine inquiry learning, historical thinking skills, and Marine Corps history to extend classroom learning beyond the standards.
The Museum offers three history trunk programs for the elementary level which focus on the difference between the past and the present, the Colonial and Revolutionary War eras, and the American Civil War. Five programs are available to middle and high schools covering the Revolutionary War, the American Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Cold War which includes the Korean War and the Vietnam War. All NMMC trunk programs include

modifications for English language learners and students with special needs so that all programs are accessible to all students.
Through the support of the Distance Learning staff, the NMMC trunk programs are available online to schools across the country and the globe in synchronous and asynchronous formats. Teachers in Residence or Museum Educators can present live virtual programs to interested classrooms. The trunk program lessons are available to teachers through the Canvas Learning Management System, many with videos filmed by the Distance Learning staff. We estimate more than 6,500 students have engaged with Museum resources since 2021 when the resources were made available online.
The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation’s Teacher in Residence program continues to support Stafford County and Prince William County Public Schools. During the 2022-2023 school year, the Teachers in Residence conducted 333 programs with a total student attendance of 8,500 students from 45 different schools across four school districts: Stafford County Public Schools, King George County Public Schools, Prince William County Public Schools, and DoDEA Americas Mid-Atlantic District.
YEAR IN REVIEW

SPECIALTY TRUNK PROGRAMS
This year, the Teachers in Residence collaborated with middle school English teachers in Stafford County to create cross-curriculum trunk programs to support the reading of All Quiet on the Western Front and Code Talker. The cross-curriculum trunks use the Museum’s replica artifacts to provide historical context on World War I for All Quiet on the Western Front and World War II for Code Talker. By supporting the English curriculum with historical context, students develop a better understanding and appreciation for the books they read in class. A total of 1,875 students from 74 different English classes attended cross-curriculum trunk programs during the 22-23 school year.
The Teachers is Residence continue to develop leadership programs for students of all grade levels. This year, the Teachers in Residence created leadership programming for middle and high school students focused on the leadership traits and principles of the United States Marine Corps. In these programs, students study the leadership traits and principles of the Marine Corps as well as examples of Marine Corps leaders. Students then apply their knowledge of leadership through team building exercises and leadership scenarios with the goal of helping students become strong leaders in their schools and communities.
In the Honor, Courage, and Commitment Leadership Program for elementary schools, students learn about the three core Marine Corps values of honor, courage,
and commitment by studying Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipients from World War I, World War II, and the Cold War. A total of 280 elementary, middle, and high school students participated in leadership programs during the 22-23 school year.
The Stafford County Teacher in Residence has partnered with SCPS Job Coaches to provide leadership trunk programs for students with special needs. Based on the leadership principles and traits of the United States Marine Corps, these leadership programs draw upon the storied lineage of the Marine Corps for positive leadership examples. Through critical thinking exercises, team building challenges, and leadership simulations, students build the necessary communication skills and self-confidence to succeed in the workforce. A total of 175 special needs students from three different high schools completed leadership programs during the 22-23 school year.
In conjunction with the NMMC’s Education Department, the Teachers in Residence offer a number of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) programs to students at the Museum, in their school classrooms, and virtually. Our “Ships to Shore” program exploring Marine Corps life aboard ship during the Revolutionary War continues to be highly requested. Students investigate the density of objects and fluids through hands-on science demonstrations before constructing their own sea-worthy, load-bearing ship. Ships are made from construction paper, which represents the wooden ships, and packaging tape, which represents the tar or pitch used to waterproof wooden ships.
DISTANCE LEARNING
The Distance Learning staff with support from Marine Corps Heritage Foundation special assistants created, filmed, and presented synchronous and asynchronous programming to more than 9,000 virtual visitors over the past year. Distance Learning offers programs to local, national, and global audiences. The Distance Learning staff offers live virtual gallery tours, partners with different organizations to create specialty programs, and facilitates virtual professional military education classes. In addition, the Distance Learning staff supports the Teachers in Residence through the creation of asynchronous learning for students and educators.
9,000+
In 2023, programming was presented to over 9,000 virtual visitors
Distance Learning virtual tours are hosted by a Teacher in Residence, an Education Specialist, or a Distance Learning staff member. Virtual programs reached national audiences, with specialized programs for multiple states and multiple school districts within Virginia. All Distance Learning programs include downloadable supplemental activities for all grade levels to help viewers engage with the content. Distance Learning provides virtual tours through seven of the Museum’s galleries: Leatherneck, Defending the New Republic, Global Expeditionary Force, World War I, World War II, Cold War (Korea), and Vietnam.
Throughout 2023, the Distance Learning staff developed and presented programs on special topics such as Black History Month and Read Across America. Distance Learning presents each special topic multiple times to provide ample opportunities for students across the country to participate in the program. Special topic presentations drew thousands of online visitors to the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
Distance Learning continues to provide adult educational programming through partnerships with various organizations, such as Veterans Organizations, while facilitating professional military education (PME) courses for both USMC and USMCR organizations.

NMMC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
FAMILY DAYS
The Museum’s Education Department organizes a Family Day one Saturday each month. Each Family Day has a unique theme and activities for all ages. Family Days celebrated Black History Month in February, Women’s History Month in March, and Month of the Military Child in May. Other Family Days focused on Marine Corps topics such as military technologies, physical fitness, and amphibious landings. The 2023 Family Days wrapped up with holiday themed events: Halloween, Veteran’s Day, and a visit from Santa. Family Days attracted more than 4,600 visitors to the National Museum of the Marine Corps in 2023.
PRESCHOOL PLAYDATE
The Education Department presented a Preschool Playdate monthly in 2023 to accompany each Family Day. During 2023, each Preschool Playdate was also presented in an online synchronous format by the Distance Learning staff. Playdate themes correspond to the Museum’s Family Days, often sharing topics. Preschool Playdates include songs, books, and activities accessible to young learners. In 2023, 272 preschoolers attended Preschool Playdates in person while 2,100 preschoolers attended virtual Preschool Playdates.
HOMESCHOOL DAYS
Once per quarter, the Education Department welcomes local homeschool students to the Museum for Homeschool Days. This year’s homeschool topics included Music of the Marine Corps, Marine Corps Vehicles, and the Navajo Code Talkers. Each Homeschool Day includes activities for early and late elementary school levels as well as middle and high school students. In 2023, 670 homeschoolers attended Homeschool Days.

SUMMER CAMPS
The Museum’s Education Department continued their Summer Camp programs over the summer of 2023. The Museum offered two different camps over five weeks for students from Grades 4 to 6. In June, the Museum held two sessions of Marine Corps History and Leadership Camp. Attending students toured the galleries, studied the leadership traits and principles of the United States Marine Corps, and completed leadership simulations. 42 total students attended across the two weeks of Marine Corps History and Leadership Camp.
In July, the Museum offered three sessions of the Marine Corps STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) Camp concentrating on the intersection of STEAM topics with the Marine Corps. Students explored the Combat Art Gallery and learned about the significance of the USMC Combat Artist Program. Students also conducted activities concerning science and engineering. 58 students attended over the three weeks of Marine Corps STEAM Camp.

TEACHER IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM
The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation has sponsored the Teacher in Residence (TIR) program at the National Museum of the Marine Corps for the past fourteen years. The TIR program allows selected teachers from Stafford and Prince William Counties the opportunity to develop ways to teach the rich history and heritage of the United States Marine Corps and to introduce the National Museum of the Marine Corps to teachers and students across the country. Teachers in Residence primarily deliver in-person programming within area schools through our historical trunk programs detailed previously. Additional TIR programs and initiatives are discussed below.
DIGITAL GALLERY GUIDE
This year, the Teachers in Residence developed a digital gallery guide specifically for visiting school groups but available to all visitors. The gallery guide connects information in the Museum to State and National standards for middle school United States History. The guide leads users from the Revolutionary War through the end of the Cold War and through each of the main galleries of the Museum. The gallery guide is available to school groups and visitors on the Museum’s website by selecting the Teacher page under the Education dropdown menu then scrolling down to the Gallery Guide section of the page.
LEADERSHIP PROGRAMMING
The Teachers in Residence continue to grow leadership education at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. The Teachers in Residence now offer two leadership trunk programs, one for elementary school students and one for middle and high school students. The Teachers in Residence welcomed over 250 students from local schools to the Museum for field trips focused on Marine Corps leaders and leadership. In March and April of 2023, the Teachers in Residence hosted Spring Break Leadership Programs for high school students

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE MARINE CORPS
2023 INTERNS
The primary focus of the National Museum of the Marine Corps (NMMC) is the preservation and exhibition of the Marine Corps’ material history. While preserving history, the Museum also invests in both the Museum’s and the Marine Corps’ future.
In partnership with the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, the Museum executes a dynamic college intern program and also utilizes special assistants to provide specialized skills and fill gaps in the daily operations of the Museum and care for its collections. These individuals are immersed in and gain appreciation for the past, while they are also learning and applying the skills and the reverence needed to ensure the future of this Museum and museums throughout the world. The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation and the Museum are grateful for the time and talents of our interns and our special assistants.

“Since our Basic School Class (3-67) members all have fond memories of training at Quantico, it was important that we gather in the National Museum of the Marine Corps, where we were surrounded by tangible memories and touchstones of our years in the Corps. At our banquet, we all felt like we were back on active duty and ready to take any beach or hill that we were ordered to.”
MAJOR FRED C. LASH, USMC (RET) President, TBS Class of 3-67 on hosting their reunion

This was an incredibly special day for me, alongside all of my friends and family. Even more special, was that I was commissioned by my father, a retired Marine Officer who was also promoted at the museum during his time of service. There was truly no better place to have the ceremony than in the NMMC itself, as we were surrounded by the history and legacy of the Marine Corps. From the ceremony to the catered reception, the NMMC made this transition seamless for all of us. The events and catering staff did a phenomenal job of presenting customized options to ensure the moment would be one we would never forget!

REVIEW
STATE OF THE MARINE CORPS HISTORY DIVISION YEAR IN
The Marine Corps History Division (HD) continued to grow and improve in 2023. Each Branch continues to fill vacancies and develop their teams of historians and archivists. The Division continues its mission to research, write, and publish official histories across the 248 years of Marine Corps history.
The team has added significant collections and capacity for more Archival material. The Oral History program is reaching out and working with senior leaders across the Marine Corps conducting and recording important oral history interviews. The Field Histories Branch continues to support the oral history program as well as conduct field collection of materials from units and exercises. HD continues to expand its

operational capacity and activities, spurred on by the professional growth and dedication to the history mission by the people who make up this team.
Notable in 2023, HD has experienced a year of renewal, growth, and stabilization. After dramatic organizational change in 2021 and the departure of the last permanent HD director in April of that year, HD has experienced unusually high staff turnover. This includes its leadership. Since April 2021, HD has been managed by a succession of three Acting Directors (Richard Jaques, Robert Peterson, and Craig Swanson) seconded from other organizations within Marine Corps University (MCU). All the while, there has been an ongoing effort to recruit and bring aboard new staff members while conducting three separate job searches for the new HD director.
In December 2021, Mr. Rob Peterson, MCU’s Director of Plans, was detailed to replace Richard as Acting Director. Mr. Peterson continued in this role through April 2023. At that point, Mr. Peterson returned to his VPAA Plans position and Dr. Craig Swanson was appointed as Acting Director (while also maintaining his position as Associate Dean of Academics at Command and Staff College). This latest change of leadership coincided with a new nationwide job search for a permanent HD director. The USAJOBs search resulted in 16 applicants. The

Hiring Committee determined that nine were “fully qualified” based on guidance from the MCU CG, the Position Description, and the Solicitation of Interest. The Hiring Committee conducted virtual interviews with the top five then invited the three final candidates to MCU for in-person meetings with the CG, top MCU leadership, and HD staff members. This phase of the hiring process should be completed 12 October. It is likely the CG will make her final selection for the new HD Director

by mid-October and the final phase of the hiring process can move forward.
In 2021, HD’s re-organization consolidated its structure into three branches. The Histories Branch primarily focused on researching and writing Marine Corps official history. The Archives Branch integrates and manages HD’s previously distinct collections of oral histories, historical reference files, and archival collections. HD’s third section, the Field Historian Branch comprised of Marine Corps Reserve Component members of MCU’s Individual Mobilization Augmentee Detachment (IMA Det), retained its internal notional practice of focusing individual Det members’ collection efforts with the geographically closest Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) elements, along with assigning members to the Joint Staff’s Joint History and Research Office (JHRO). This reorganization also resulted in the disestablishment of the Reference Branch, from which resources and historical content were transferred to the Library and Archives Branch.
HD welcomed Dr. Henry Himes to the Histories Branch in January 2022, and Dr. Lisa Budreau in April 2022. Dr. Tyler Reed joined Archives Branch in October 2022. HD is promoting Alyson Mazzone to ArchivistTeam Leader in 2023. In June 2023, Mrs. Mary Rose joined the division as Deputy Director. Also, in 2023, HD welcome Mrs. Arielle Evans, Ms. Krystjana Bruce, and Mr. Jacob Petrie to the Archive Branch. Mr. Dieter Stenger also joined the Archive Branch as its new Reference Historian.
HISTORIES BRANCH
The Chief Historian is Dr. Brian Neumann. Dr. Neumann came to HD in October of 2020, having previously taught at Texas A&M and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, before joining the U.S. Army Center of Military History

(CMH) in 2010 and subsequently serving on the Chief of Staff of the Army’s Operation ENDURING FREEDOM Study Group and as the CMH WWI subject matter expert.
Dr. Seth Givens has since begun research on U.S. Marines in Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2003, Volume 1 of HD’s approved 4-volume definitive history project on Marine operations in Iraq, post 9/11.
Other writing projects underway include:
• U.S. Marines in WWI: Soissons
• Women in the Marine Corps: Volume 3: 2001-2021
• U pdate to Pride, Progress, and Prospects
• M arine Barracks Washington
• U.S. Marines in the Frigate Navy
In addition, in 2023 HD will began work on
• 9/11 Commemorative (25th Anniversary)
• A Concise History of the United States Marine Corps (250th Anniversary Commemoration)
• Marines in the Revolutionary War (250th Commemoration)
• U.S. Marines in WWI: Belleau Wood
• A H istory of Marine Corps Aviation, 1976-2001
• During 2023, Histories Branch will develop a definitive history project of Marines in Operation Enduring Freedom and continue its work on Oral History Collection.
ORAL HISTORY
Dr. Jessica Sheets joined HD in September 2021 as the Oral Historian. She developed an SOP for the Oral History Program and has since focused on conducting end-of-tour interviews with general officers, primarily active duty. Interviewees include Gen Berger, Gen (Ret) McKenzie, LtGen Furness, LtGen (Ret) Rudder, MajGen Renforth, MajGen Watson, BGen Ellison, and 14 more. MCHF Assistant Eugene (Reggie) Reid provided archival support to Dr. Sheets as she conducts research in preparation for oral history interviews of Gen (Ret) Peter Pace and Gen (Ret) Joseph Dunford.
ARCHIVES BRANCH
The Chief Archivist is Mr. John Lyles. Mr. Lyles has been with the Archives for a number of years and was promoted to Branch Supervisor in 2022. Under his guidance and mentorship, the Archives Branch continues to develop and refine key programs such as the Command Chronology Program, Commemorative Naming Program and the Lineage and Honors program. corps. For the archival collection itself, the Branches’ priority continues to focus on digitization of its holdings. Digitization is a multifaceted process that involves digital conversion, metadata creation, digital object upload and ingest, and database management. The scope and scale of the digitization project involves more than one million photographs, 20,000 large format maps and drawings, 35,000 oral histories, and estimated between 25-30 million pages of textual documents. Much of the work on this project is supported through the efforts of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.
FIELD HISTORY BRANCH (IMA DET)
The Field History Branch is led by Colonel Erich Wagner. Under his leadership, this IMA Detachment has been extremely active in its collection efforts – both documentary records and oral histories. Of highest recognition, the IMA Det, through an
incredible, team-wide effort, captured oral histories of the Afghanistan/HKIA NEO Joint Task Force participants, from Marines with the MEU to key leaders at Marine Forces Central Command, and also the last Marine Security Guards in Afghanistan as well as Marines and Afghans during Operation Allies Refuge in Quantico and across the United States. This project alone captured 225-plus oral history interviews, and will prove an invaluable source of research material to inform both the public and future decision-makers. In addition, Det members interviewed Marines who served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, and participated in exercises from COLD RESPONSE in Norway and Southern Command’s UNITAS. The Field History Branch also continues to work with the Joint History and Research Office (JHRO), where they continue to ensure that joint historical plans and products will include Marine Corps perspectives and contributions.
During 2023, Field History Branch continues to work closely with Dr. Sheets and the Oral History Program to develop and implement a comprehensive collection plan for collecting key oral histories. In addition, they are making connections with MEFlevel exercise and operations cells in order to send participants to large-scale exercises and activities in order to collect historical material in real time.
The Foundation provided History Division with numerous special assistants who supported the Archives Branch. One example includes cataloging over 15,000 digital images.
MCHF SUPPORT
HD continues to receive and benefit from MCHF’s enhancement support. Through MCHF’s generous support, HD’s effort during all or part of 2023 were significantly enhanced by the efforts of five individuals. The Foundation continued its support for one resident General Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr. Memorial Dissertation Fellow. Dr. Ross Phillips provided valuable support and assistance with archival processing and reference expertise while completing his dissertation. Dr. Phillips left History Division in July of 2023 to take a teaching position as the Class of 1957 Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Naval Heritage with the United States Naval Academy. Dr. Phillips successfully defended his dissertation in the same month. It should also be noted that Dr. Laurence Nelson, resident General Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr. Memorial Dissertation Fellow, who departed in 2022 for employment with the Army’s Center for Military History, successfully defended his dissertation in September of 2023.
The Foundation provided HD with numerous special assistants. Michael Jacobs (January – June 2023), supported the Archives Branch by cataloging over 15,000 digital images related to an ad hoc 35mm Slide Collection covering Marine Corps combat operations from Vietnam to Desert Storm. Mr. Jacobs accepted a position as Curator at the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience.
Victoria Simonsen (January 2023 to present), supported the Archive Branch by reprocessing various personal paper collections, contributing to social media posts that greatly increased the public’s awareness of our holdings and assisting the digitization and cataloging of fragile and at-

risk documents to enhance their preservation and access. Ms. Simonsen has tentatively accepted a position with the National Archives and Records Administration. Carrie Moulton (January 2023 to present) has been a jack of all trades for the Archives. Ms. Moulton has assisted in processing collections, creating social media posts that educate the public on Marine Corps history and the archival holdings of the History Division, and by tackling the reorganizing of a large photograph collection that was found in a state of disorder. Finally, Mr. Reggie Reid (September 2022 to present) assisted with processing archival collections and has been instrumental in the transcription and digitization of oral histories. Mr. Reid has demonstrated extraordinary acumen in leveraging technology to digitize legacy analog media formats.
The relationship with MCHF fellowship and assistant programs continues to be mutually beneficial. The fellows and assistants receive a personal immersion into an active service history office. There is no doubt that their time at HD positively impacts their basic knowledge and appreciation of the profession, provides meaningful and progressively responsible experiences, and contributes to their future career successes. HD benefits not only by receiving an extra set of hands to assist with the management of the collections, but by allowing staff the opportunity to develop their administration skills, mentor young professionals, demonstrate project management capabilities, and to exercise aspects of leadership.
During 2023, the Archives Branch began to actively collect materials from Marine Corps units around the globe, in partnership with the Field History Branch, as well as continues to build the digital archive and its accessibility.

LEAVE A LEGACY WAYS TO GIVE
Legacy gifts often refer to gifts made from your will or trust. These gifts can often be easy to arrange. If your will or trust is up-to-date, and you want to include a gift to the MCHF, you may be able to simply amend your will or trust.
Another easy way to make a legacy gift is to name the MCHF as a beneficiary of assets such as bank or brokerage accounts, donor advised funds, retirement accounts and life insurance. These assets can be gifted, in whole or in part, directly to the MCHF, usually by percentage of the account or policy value. The process is actually quite straightforward. Contact the plan administrator or account manager and request a beneficiary designation form (or download it from the company’s website). Complete the form using our legal name — Marine Corps Heritage Foundation — and Tax Identification Number (TIN) 26-0803466 and return it. If you’re adding the MCHF as a beneficiary, please let us know so we can acknowledge your generosity.
If you’ve already made a legacy gift to the MCHF, please be sure that the gift language in your will or trust or on your beneficiary designation form has our correct TIN and current address.
MAKE A GIFT TODAY
If you, like Dave, have already made a gift to the MCHF from your will or trust or as a beneficiary of another asset, but haven’t notified us, or — if you are considering doing so, please contact Gayle Union at (703) 586-7463 or union@marineheritage.org
THANK YOU!

“The Museum has attained the status of hallowed ground, and it is a magnificent place that teaches visitors about the history of our Corps. The MCHF is very meaningful to both me and my wife, Tina, and its support of the Museum is vital. I’m proud of our Corps and of being a Marine. I hope to inspire other Marines to make a legacy gift to the MCHF. And, I’m proud to say that Wally Campbell remains a great friend and mentor!”

LTCOL DAVID (DAVE) JONAS, USMC (RET.)
Dave Jonas was the first in his family to become a Marine, although he hadn’t given much thought to the Marine Corps until he began college. It was at that point that he decided that being in the Marine Corps would be a challenge, so he enrolled in the PLC program, with the intention of only fulfilling his initial obligated commitment.
What Dave hadn’t counted on was serving under great leaders like his first Marine boss, Colonel Wally Campbell. Wally understood what it meant to look out for his Marines. After Dave had met his obligation and planned to leave the Corps, Col Campbell posed a question that altered Dave’s plans in a big way. He asked him what it would take for him to remain in the Corps. Dave wanted to command a unit and Col Campbell made that happen. Says Dave, “I had opportunities only the Corps could have made possible -- commanding two units including Headquarters Company, 5th Marines and deploying on two WESTPACs as the 13th MAU (MEU) SJA. Wally shaped my leadership style and paved the way for me to serve 20 years.”
Dave has the distinction of being the first judge advocate in the history of the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marine Corps to argue a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. In his last tour in the Marine Corps, he served as the Pentagon’s nuclear nonproliferation planner for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The skills that Dave learned in that role positioned him to become a member of the career Senior Executive Service as the General Counsel of the National Nuclear Security Administration and the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board. He also teaches a course he created, Nuclear Nonproliferation Law & Policy, at Georgetown and George Washington University law schools. He was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for his work with the Joint Chiefs from 1997 to 2001.
