The Foundation intends to make sure all Americans understand the tremendous contribution that the Marine Corps makes in defense of our nation.

This past year, I had the honor of joining the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation’s Board of Directors as its chairman. I believe strongly in our mission, to preserve and promulgate the history, traditions, and culture of the Marine Corps and educate all Americans in its virtues.
As you know, the number one way we achieve this mission is through the National Museum of the Marine Corps. I am excited to work alongside my fellow board members, the Foundation leadership, as well as our staff and colleagues at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. I am grateful to each of them for making sure the Museum remains a special place dedicated to the men and women who have proudly served, and continue to serve, our nation as Marines.
I would also like to thank you, our supporters, for making it possible for us to ensure that the Museum tells the story of every man and woman who earned the title “Marine”. We asked you to support our cause and you came through. Your generosity was key to helping us achieve our goals this year.
Next, I would like to share several new initiatives that will be introduced in 2023 to enhance the visitor experience and broaden our reach. An expansion of Semper Fidelis Memorial Park is underway and should be complete this year. In addition, the laser simulated Rifle Range in the National Museum has been updated and improved. You will now be able to fire the M16, M1 and M4 – an opportunity to test your marksmanship skills since you last qualified.
In early 2023, we will release an updated Virtual Tour of the National Museum of the Marine Corps. For those of you who won’t be able to visit in person,
this online tour will allow you to walk each gallery and view artifacts up close. The tour also features a searchable collections database that will be a terrific resource for our students, Marines, and their family members.
And finally, we are already preparing to celebrate the 250th Birthday of the United States Marine Corps in 2025. In two short years, we will celebrate this momentous occasion, and the Foundation intends to make sure all Americans understand the tremendous contribution that the Marine Corps makes in defense of our Nation. Stay tuned as plans begin to come together for what will be a memorable year.
Thank you again for your generous contributions in support of our mission. Together, we will ensure the National Museum of the Marine Corps remains a sacred place dedicated to the men and women who proudly serve our Nation as Marines. I look forward to seeing you at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
Semper Fidelis,
Gen Gary Thomas, USMC (Ret) Chairman, MCHF

This has been an exciting year here at the finest military museum in the world, the National Museum of the Marine Corps! So much happened this last year. Throughout 2022, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation honored the history and celebrated the legacy of our Marine Corps –and supporters like you made it all possible. Thank you!
I hope many of you had a chance to visit and participate in some of the highlights of 2022. We hosted multiple reunions – Iwo Jima veterans and their families in February, Chosin veterans and their families in September, a Basic School class from the Vietnam War, and a rifle company from Operation Iraqi Freedom to name a few – that showcased how your museum honors and remembers the service of all Marines from all eras. Our Summer Concert Series included Navy and Marine Corps bands including the Commandant’s Own Drum and Bugle Corps and the President’s Own Marine Corps Band. The world famous Budweiser Clydesdales packed the parking lot on a beautiful day in September with one of the largest crowds we’ve seen in years.
Another highlight was the 2022 Annual Awards Ceremony, in-person at the Museum for the first time since 2019. The program celebrated distinguished leadership and outstanding portrayals of Marine Corps history, traditions and culture. We presented the Lejeune Recognition for Exemplary Leadership Award to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the Heritage Award to Vice Chairman of the MCHF Board of Directors Paul Kalsbeek. They received their awards alongside 19 other honorees being recognized for excellence in journalism,
photography, and the arts. We are looking forward to another terrific night at the museum with our 2023 Awards Ceremony on April 29, 2023.
We’ve continued to enhance the visitor experience inside the Museum with special featured movies in our large screen theater, a new and improved laser rifle range, and new menus and specials at Tun Tavern and Devil Dog Diner. The Museum installed new collections including an exhibit of Marines in Space (you’ll be surprised how many Marines have been and currently are astronauts!), recently acquired combat art, and other additions to the collection. Work on new galleries is well under way and can be viewed from the balcony above. Once complete, these new galleries will seamlessly blend with those that are currently open, continuing the thread of our legacy that began in 1775 and continues today.
The Museum continues to be a tremendous educational resource for students of all ages, and we are extremely proud of the education programs we support. The Foundation provides two full-time public school teachers who teach classes and make it easier for schools to access the Museum’s resources. In addition to in-person classes here in the Museum, the education team provides expanded virtual events
and distance learning programs, ensuring that the history and legacy of our Marines can be shared with an even wider audience.
Beyond the Museum walls, we’re also hard at work expanding Semper Fidelis Memorial Park. This expansion will add space for over 20,000 new bricks, 20 new monument locations, 2 new Rally Points, an outdoor pavilion to be used for small ceremonies, a footbridge, and the use of an actual Marine Corps Medium Girder Bridge to cross the wetlands. Once completed, our visitors will have another half mile of additional pathways to reflect on Marine Corps history, gather with friends and loved ones, and honor the sacrifices made for our Country. For those that can’t make it to Quantico, the Foundation has sponsored a traveling art exhibit of combat art from the Museum’s collection at select museums across the US. Check our website to see if it is in a town near you! And early in 2023, we will roll out a new virtual tour of the Museum that you just have to see. Again, look for that on our website.
None of this important work would be possible without the generous support and steadfast dedication of our donors. Every gift helps us to tell the proud history of our Corps, preserve the legacies of all Marines, and honor the sacrifices that these brave men and women have made to protect our Nation. Thank you.
I am honored to serve as President and CEO of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. Being a part of the great work your Foundation continues to do is its own reward, but to witness the steadfast dedication to our Marines by supporters like you is an honor. I look forward to what we will accomplish together in 2023!
Semper Fidelis,
MajGen

USMC (Ret) President & CEO, Marine Corps Heritage Foundation

The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation had a busy and exciting 2022. Each year, we host and support a variety of programs and events at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and beyond its walls. Take a look back at our year in review.

The Traveling Combat Art Exhibit titled “Honor, Courage, Commitment: Marine Corps Art, 1975-2018” continued its tour to the St. George Art Museum in St. George, Utah from February to April and the National Museum of the Air Force in Dayton, Ohio from June to November. Most of the exhibit’s art was initially on display in the National Museum of the Marine Corps’ Combat Art Gallery. Featuring over thirty works of art by 15 combat artists, the exhibit focuses on the Marine Corps following the Vietnam War through today. The 34 works on canvas and two sculptures provide a window into the experiences of the artists, many of whom saw active combat. Their directive for creating their art from the Marine Corps was simple: “Go to war, do art.” The exhibition will complete its tour in 2023 with planned stops at Turtle Bay Exploration Park in Redding, California and The George H.W. Bush Presidential Library & Museum in College Station, Texas.

In June, eight trees from Belleau Wood, France were planted during a ceremony on the 104th anniversary of the start of the Battle of Belleau Wood at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. The trees planted were grown from acorns that were recovered at Belleau Wood and now stand as a living memorial to the Marines, soldiers and sailors who fought there.
As of July, the address to the National Museum of the Marine Corps and Marine Corps Heritage Foundation officially changed to 1775 Semper Fidelis Way. A small ceremony was held with a ribbon cutting in honor of the new name. In attendance were representatives from Marine Corps Base Quantico, Prince William County and Virginia Department of Transportation.
The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation’s annual Summer Concert Series returned this summer with stellar performances from the United States Navy Band’s Country Current and United States Navy Band Cruisers in June, followed by performances by the United States Navy Concert Band, “The Commandant’s Own” United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps and “The President’s Own” United States Marine Corps Band in August. The free outdoor concerts drew in hundreds of attendees from the local community.

The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation installed over 1,400 new commemorative bricks and two plaques in Semper Fidelis Memorial Park on the grounds adjacent to the National Museum of Marine Corps, for a total of over 38,000 memorial bricks throughout the Park presently.
In May, the Foundation was honored to welcome the New Zealand Embassy during a visit to the Park. 2022 marked the 80th anniversary of United States Marines arriving in New Zealand. A plaque is prominently displayed in the Park and is an exact match to its sister plaque that is located on a wall bordering Frank Kitts Park on the Wellington NZ waterfront.
In September, the Foundation had the honor of installing a brick with Luis Clemente, son of legendary MLB player and Marine Roberto Clemente, along the pathway in the Park. The brick honors Clemente’s time in the Marine Corps Reserve as an infantryman. Luis shared his enthusiasm to have a memory of his father at the Museum and mentioned that his father was “very proud to be a Marine.”
It was announced in the spring of 2022 plans for the expansion of Semper Fidelis Memorial Park. Once completed, the expansion will have space for 22 memorials, including two grand memorials that are upwards of 1200 sq. ft, with a focus on honoring modern-day Marines. Two other vital elements are the benches spaced out for quiet reflection and the Memorial Pavilion, which provides a view of the Museum and creates an additional site for peaceful contemplation, similar to the Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel. The Semper Fidelis Memorial Park Expansion will offer our visitors another half a mile of pathways to become more aware of Marine Corps history and the sacrifices made to protect the freedom of our Nation. A groundbreaking ceremony took place in September. YEAR IN REVIEW

In September, the Foundation welcomed 51 Korean War and Frozen Chosin veterans to the National Museum of the Marine Corps for their annual Chosin Few Reunion. The veterans toured the Museum and visited the Chosin Few monument in the Semper Fidelis Memorial Park. The Battle of the Chosin Reservoir stands as one of the most iconic conflicts of the Marine Corps. The battle is the origin of the famous quote by General Oliver P. Smith “Retreat, Hell! We’re not retreating, we’re just advancing in a different direction.”
Nearly 1,500 visitors gathered to see the world-renowned Budweiser Clydesdales at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in September. Visitors were able to take pictures with the world famous hitch and see the Clydesdales in action multiple times throughout the event. The horses have traveled across America entertaining millions every year since their founding in 1933 to celebrate the repeal of Prohibition.

The Medal of Honor Theater located on the first floor of the National Museum of the Marine Corps offered a variety of Marine Corps and military themed films throughout the year. Featured films included Hidden Figures for the 60th Anniversary of Friendship 7 Space Mission, captained by LtCol John Glenn USMC, first American to orbit the Earth; Megan Leavey in honor of National K9 Veterans Day; Midway for the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Midway; Guadalcanal Diary and The Gift. The year closed out with the ever-popular Holiday Film Series in conjunction with visits from Santa to the Museum.
The Foundation hosted the premiere of the documentary The Gift in July.
The documentary centers on the heroism and bravery of Corporal Jason Dunham, who was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously in 2007. On November 10, 2006, at the dedication of the National Museum of the Marine Corps, President George W. Bush announced that Corporal Dunham would receive the Medal of Honor, making him the second recipient of the Medal of Honor for actions in the Iraq War and the first Marine recipient for actions since the Vietnam War. The documentary is told through presentday interviews with the Dunham family and Marines who served alongside Corporal Dunham and shows how his sacrifice has affected Kilo Company’s men over the past 17 years. Corporal Dunham’s parents and family watched the premiere alongside the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Kilo Company Commander LtCol Trent Gibson and over 30 members of Kilo Company.

“The National Museum of the Marine Corps was the perfect wedding venue to represent our separate upbringings, our current careers, and the values and commitments we share with each other, our families, and the Marine Corps. We couldn’t imagine being married at any other venue.”

Throughout 2022, the Foundation’s Events team managed over 300 private events including weddings, promotions, retirements and other celebrations in the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel and the Medal of Honor Theater. Hear from a few of our clients on what hosting an event at the Museum meant to them.
“
We strive very hard to ensure the perpetuation and memorialization of the legacy of our WWII Iwo Jima and Pacific Island veterans through a number of events and education. A visit to the museum does that in spades and is the perfect way with the life-like characters and the running visual history of the Marine Corps in the Pacific. The set-up is perfect and provides for a memory that will forever remain with those who have the pleasure of visiting. The hospitality and knowledge of the docents is second-to-none.”
- LtCol Raul A. Sifuentes, USMC (Ret) on Iwo Jima Association of America, Inc. annual event

In September, the laser simulated Rifle Range located in the National Museum of the Marine Corps’ Making Marines Gallery completed renovations and upgrades to the indoor exhibit thanks to a generous donor. The range now features new rifle options including the M1 Garand, M16 and M4. Former drill instructor and current Museum docent, First Sergeant Randall E. Shuck USMC (Ret) is featured as the voice commanding visitors as they prepare to test their marksmanship. The exhibit honors and reminds visitors that every Marine is a rifleman.

“
There was no better way to end a 35-year Federal government career with the Marine Corps than to have my retirement party at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Because of the pandemic, I had been locked down for two years and hadn’t had a chance to see my family or co-workers. It was great to be with my Marine Corps family and my relatives to celebrate the end of my wonderful federal career. We received excellent customer service from the staff. They were attentive, courteous, and professional. We were able to select a custom menu and the food was well-prepared.”
- Michelle Smoot on her retirement
It was incredibly meaningful to both of us that we could gather with family, friends, loved ones, and fellow Marines in the beautiful Semper Fi Memorial Chapel that day to celebrate our dual retirement. As we sat in the beautiful chapel bathed in natural light and bittersweet feelings, we found it was a perfect and meaningful location to close out our joint 44 years of service that was begun together, in Quantico, VA on a hot summer day, over two decades ago.”

YEAR IN REVIEW

The National Museum of the Marine Corps (NMMC) had a busy year as the NMMC staff, made up of 47 federal civilian NMMC employees and small Marine detachment, developed and established a new, postCOVID-19 museum experience for its visitors.
Pre-COVID visitation was approximately 400,000 visitors; post-COVID fiscal year (FY) 2022 visitation saw the return of 302,959 visitors to the NMMC. The NMMC staff, with support from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, are responsible for NMMC operations, educational programs, exhibits, collections, visitor services, public affairs, and other professional museum activities.
The Director finalized preparations for the 10-year American Alliance of Museums (AAM) reaccreditation. With input from NMMC senior staff, the Director completed the AAM reaccreditation self-study and submitted it in late October 2021. The AAM’s Visiting Committee conducted a two-day, accreditation site visit on 28 and 29 March 2022, touring both the NMMC and its off-site collections storage facilities. The committee met with the NMMC’s Director and Deputy Director and staff from each of the NMMC’s branches, the President of Marine Corps University (MCU) and Commanding General (CG) of Education Command (EDCOM), and MCU staff.
The AAM’s Visiting Committee members said they were truly impressed with the amount of planning, execution, dedication, teamwork, mutual respect, and overall professionalism among all the NMMC staff. One committee member said that there was a remarkable level of thoughtfulness behind all that the NMMC staff does. On 14 July 2022, the AAM advised the Director that the NMMC was awarded reaccreditation, acknowledging that the NMMC maintains a gold standard among professional museums, meets national standards and best practices for U.S. museums, and remains a member of a community of institutions that holds themselves publicly accountable to the principles of excellence. Through a rigorous process of self-assessment and review by its peers, the NMMC continued to show that it was a good steward of the resources held in the public trust and committed to a philosophy of continual institutional growth.
The closure of the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum (FLAM) at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar created a time-sensitive project that required immediate attention and dedication of man-hours. The FLAM had displayed and stored 36 NMMC-owned aircraft along with approximately 20 large ground vehicles, thousands of micro artifacts, and hundreds of linear feet of archival material. To preserve and protect these artifacts, the Director worked with MCU to finalize a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Government and the Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation (FLHF), a non-profit that hopes to renovate an old hangar in El Toro, California, in order to build a Marine aviation museum. The MOU establishes the requirements for the FLHF to borrow NMMC-owned artifacts for display in its potential future museum. While the aircraft would

remain secured at the former FLAM in anticipation of FLHF requesting the aircraft for loan to its future museum, all other items had to be evaluated by NMMC curators to determine if they meet the requirements of the NMMC Collections Rationale. NMMC staff traveled to Miramar in June to inventory and evaluate the artifacts and to determine which artifacts would need to be shipped to the Museum Support Facility (MSF); additional staff returned in August to pack and ship the selected micro artifacts, artwork, and firearms.
The NMMC has started planning for the 250th birthday of the Marine Corps. The Project Manager coordinated a series of “blue sky” meetings with NMMC, MCU, MCB Quantico staff, former staff, and volunteers. The list of ideas generated from these meetings has been pared down into feasible exhibitions, educational programs, special events, and other activities. The NMMC Director envisions the commemoration to launch on the day after the 249th birthday in 2024, run throughout 2025, and end in 2026, which marks the 250th birthday of the United States. The NMMC Artist in Residence’s primary responsibilities are to create combat art and illustrations for the Marine Corps combat art collection and to manage and promote the Marine Corps Combat Art Program (MCCAP). The Artist worked on the Historical Illustrations Project, which will be completed in time for the 250th birthday of the Marine Corps in November 2025. The Historical Illustrations Project consists of 25 to 30, large-scale paintings that feature key moments in Marine Corps history, from the Vietnam era to the present. He recommended commissions for other artists to produce combat art and illustrations to accent the Historical Illustrations Project: Marc Poole, president of the American Society of Aviation Artists, will produce a two-dimensional work featuring Marine Women in aviation in World War II, and Joe Winslow, a Marine historian, will create a bas relief sculpture depicting Marines in action in Operation Phantom Fury.
The Artist drafted MARADMIN 267/22 which asked Marines across the Marine Corps to submit portfolios for the MCCAP. This resulted in 22 submitted portfolios which will be evaluated in the new fiscal year. He held artist workshops to mentor and train combat artists and began a semimonthly artist workshop in which Marine artists will be given PME in drawing and art by a veteran artist.

The Artist planned and executed the Sixth Annual Marine Corps Combat Art Symposium, held at NMMC from 8 to 10 September 2022. The symposium’s theme was collaboration, and it focused on collaboration not only among Department of Defense’s combat art programs, but also across disciplines and institutions in the civilian world, to include The Citadel and the University of Hartford. More than 40 people attended, including visiting combat artists, presenters, curators, and guest speaker and renowned illustrator C. F. Payne. He organized and promoted the Fourth Annual Marine Corps Student Art Competition. Various state education departments were notified of the competition and asked to disseminate the competition’s flyer.

During FY2022, the 24,000 square foot space that will become the post-Vietnam (and Final Phase) gallery space was outfitted with walls, life safety systems, and electrical service. Exhibit fabrication contractor Explus, Inc., of Sterling, Virginia, applied more than 500 bags of concrete to exhibit walls and platform decks, hand sculpting it into textures that ranged from dirt to bricks. FY2022 also saw the last macro artifact positioned in the new galleries as the UH-1N Huey helicopter was installed onto its display mount and 90 life-cast figures were installed onto the nine themed tableaus. These figures were placed around macro artifacts to demonstrate the operational issues that Marines face during deployment.
Twenty display cases were installed which will display accessioned artifacts in a climate-controlled atmosphere to protect the artifact from harm and preserves it in accordance with the museum industry’s best practices. Over 200 individual graphic panels were installed highlighting major strategic operations and historic events in a manner that is easy for visitors to understand.
As work on the new galleries continued, the Exhibits Branch also continued with renovations and new installations in other parts of the NMMC. In October 2022, the Exhibits Branch installed the “We The

People” traveling art exhibition in the Combat Art Gallery. The exhibition, by artist Mary White, is comprised of 50 large-scale watercolors of a veteran from each state.
The exhibition Spaceflight: The Marine Astronauts was installed in June with hanging graphics and three exhibit cases with artifacts from the NMMC’s collection and artifacts on loan from NASA and the Smithsonian.
In April 2022, the last contract needed to complete work on Galleries 13 and 14 was awarded and a kick-off meeting with the contractor occurred for designing, engineering, and installing the audio, video, media, and special effects in the new galleries as well as retrofitting and upgrading current historical galleries.
The Collections Branch is responsible for curating and preserving the material history of the Marine Corps and consists of the Collections Management Section and the Office of the Registrar, the Curatorial Section, and the Restoration Section.
The Collections Management Section (CMS) is responsible for all aspects of collections management, both physical and intellectual, for the NMMC and oversees the nearly 65,000 artifacts and artwork that are housed in four collections storage spaces, on exhibit at the NMMC, and on loan to other museums and Marine Corps units. The Registrar formally accessioned 1,370 new artifacts into the NMMC permanent collection and the Collections Committee approved these artifacts for inclusion in the permanent collection. The Registrar, with assistance from a Museum Specialist, managed nearly 200 outgoing loans of artifacts to Marine Corps units and private and public historical institutions and museums. Both the CMS and Curatorial Section moved to the MSF in February 2022, relocating from their offices in Building 2014 aboard MCB Quantico providing a larger space for the triage and processing room so that the CMS staff can properly care for incoming collections and document existing collections.

The Restoration Section, who preserve, restore, transport and safeguard all macro artifacts destined for permanent and temporary exhibit in the NMMC, assisted contractors with the lifting of the UH-1N Huey helicopter onto its stand then installed the helicopter’s blades, infrared missile jammer, ordnance racks, armament, and in-house fabricated mounting plates for the cast figures. The staff prepared four unmanned aerial vehicles for hanging in Galleries 13 and 14. The preparation included the disassembly, condition inspection, required repairs, reassembly, identification of rigging locations on the artifact, design of rigging mounts, and fabrication of incorporated rigging mounts. The Restoration Section staff assembled, inspected, and repaired ship berthing racks at the MSF prior to their delivery and assembly in Gallery 13. The team utilized original spare berthing parts to fabricate an additional rack needed for the display. It was identified that the M60 tank was missing a

center guide link on its left track. The staff researched, acquired, and installed a new center guide link. The team also researched historically accurate application methods for the missing “V” marking and acquired materials to complete the work.
The Restoration Section completed a ground-up restoration of an M151A2 MUTT [multi-utility tactical truck] produced by Ford GPW with a tube-launched, optically tracked, wire-command link guided missile (TOW) launcher configuration. The restored macro artifact depicts the Beirut, Lebanon, 1982–1984 deployment era and honors the sacrifices of the 220 Marines and 18 Sailors killed in the suicide bombing on 23 October 1983. After a four-year hiatus, restoration work picked up again on the Roebling Alligator 3 project. The new restoration team reassembled all current parts, completed the disassembly and the rebuild of the Alligator 3 powertrain, cast over a dozen track paddles, and repaired numerous damages deemed structurally unsafe.

The Curatorial Section saw outstanding collection growth and productivity in FY2022. New collections and artifact donations targeted specific gaps in the permanent collection. A notable transition is occurring as World War II era donations slow and Korean War and Vietnam era collections begin to increase. Curators concentrated on artifact research, acquisition, writing, and social media efforts. Monthly postings to Facebook and Instagram highlighted artifacts from the collection and were met with great success, promoting the collection to the public more efficiently and broadly. During the year, each curatorial section proposed numerous new exhibits or upgrades to legacy galleries. This marks a transition from Final Phase work to maintaining the quality and care of exhibits that have remained relatively unchanged since the NMMC opened in 2006.
In FY2022, Arms & Armor continued the complete overhaul of the collections storage space in Building 2121, working with the Collections Manager in designing and installing new fixtures to better

preserve the collection. Arms & Armor provided subject matter expertise to numerous commands, law enforcement agencies, writers, researchers, and the public. The staff continues the regular Weapons Wednesday video series, highlighting items from the collection not normally seen in the NMMC. This has rapidly become the NMMC’s most popular social media video product. The Arms & Armor Curator also wrote an article for Leatherneck magazine covering the M1 rifle recovered from Makin Island that was used in the Makin raid of 17 August 1942.
During FY2022, the Art Curator was involved in several exhibitions. The exhibition Go to War . . .
Do Art: 80 Years of the Marine Corps Combat Art Program is scheduled to open in February 2023.
The Art Curator completed the final script, framing, photography, and conservation of the 80 works of art. The Art Curator identified art selections for the New to the Collection art exhibition and began working on the future exhibition to commemorate the 250th birthday of the Marine Corps.

During FY2022, the Aviation Curator continued to work through donation offers and collections, with 18 collections presented to the Collections Committee for accession, along with two collections proposed for deaccession. The Aviation Curator is developing a new exhibit around the NMMC’s AH-1W Super Cobra, known for its 9/11 memorial paint scheme.
During FY2022, the Cultural & Material History (CM&H) Curator accessioned 22 collections with more than 31 artifacts. The C&MH Curator wrote several articles and “Saved Rounds” for Leatherneck magazine that included a photo essay documenting the 75th anniversary of the Toys for Tots Program.
During FY2022, C&MH worked closely with the Marine Barracks, 8th and I regarding the upcoming packing, transport, and conservation of artifacts, historical furniture, and works of art currently on loan and display in the Home of the Commandants.
Uniforms & Heraldry (U&H) accessioned 38 collections with nearly 400 individual artifacts in FY2022. U&H remains the most active curatorial discipline at the NMMC. Under the Marine Corps’ Force Design 2030
plan, high numbers of de-activated and re-designated unit organizational flags and guidons continued to be transferred to the NMMC. The majority of these came from aviation support units, combat engineers, and armor battalions. The U&H staff continued to pursue the accessioning of the U.S. Marine Corps (Quartermaster) Standard Sample artifacts, which will continue in the next fiscal year. The Curatorial Section Chief participated in a documentary on Medal of Honor recipient Woody Williams (with West Virginia Public Broadcasting). He also provided artifacts and history for a Fox Nation feature utilizing the collection of a World War II Marine who served aboard the USS Hornet. U&H curators presented exhibit updates, artifact rotations, and interpretive plans to the Exhibits Committee to add rare and significant artifacts to existing galleries that includes a Civil War officer dress cap and case that belonged to Colonel George M. Welles, Corporal William Morgan’s Vietnam-era Medal of Honor, and a major Korean War Gallery exhibit devoted to Director of Women Marines Colonel Julia Hamblet. YEAR

The Education Branch provided on-site and distance learning educational programming to students, adults, families, and veterans. Two Teachers in Residence (TIRs), funded through the MCHF includes one from Prince William County Public Schools and the other from Stafford County Public Schools. They provided additional resources and serve as liaisons with their respective school systems and assisted the Education Branch in developing and executing curricula.
The Education Branch supported a range of educational needs: pre-school children to K–12 students, adult learners, and PME that included 34,239 students in organized school groups. Family day, preschool and homeschool programs, and summer camps all attracted significant numbers along with the Distance Learning program that reached 7,930 virtual visitors last year.
In October 2021, the Education staff and TIRs presented a World War II Trunk Program to 92 students from Fredericksburg Christian School, which included classroom instruction gallery immersion, and a uniforms and weapons (both U.S. Marines and Japanese) lesson. The Marine Corps History Division (HD) continues to grow in 2022 from the significant organizational change during 2021 with the streamlining of its civilian structure into two branches – a Histories Branch primarily focused on researching and writing Marine Corps official history, and an Archives Branch to integrate and manage HD’s previously distinct collections of oral histories, historical reference files, and archival collections.
Each Branch continues to expand and develop its team of historians and archivists. The team has added significant collections and capacity for more collections to the Archive. The Oral History program is reaching out and working with senior leaders across the Marine Corps. The incredible HD continues to research, write, and publish official histories across the 247 years of Marine Corps history.

Mr. Richard Jaques, Marine Corps University (MCU)’s Director, Academic Support Division and Deputy Vice President for Academic Affairs, was detailed as Acting Director for much of 2021, while the University continued its search for a permanent Director. In December 2021, Mr. Rob Peterson, MCU’s Director of Plans, was detailed to replace Richard as Acting Director. Mr. Peterson continued in this role throughout 2022.
HD welcomed Dr. Henry Himes to the Histories Branch in January 2022, and Dr. Lisa Budreau in April 2022. Dr. Tyler Reed joined Archives Branch in October 2022. HD is promoting Alyson Mazzone to Archivist-Team Leader in 2023, and will be hiring two additional archivists in 2023. Additionally, HD will be hiring both a Reference Historian and a Deputy Director in 2023, while the process to hire a permanent Director continues.
HD’s third section, the Field Historian Branch comprised of Marine Corps Reserve Component members of MCU’s Individual Mobilization Augmentee Detachment (IMA Det), retained its internal notional practice of focusing individual Det members’ collection efforts with the geographically closest Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) elements, along with assigning members to the Joint Staff’s Joint History and Research Office (JHRO). The Field Histories Branch continues to support the oral history program as well as conduct field collection of materials from units and exercises.

The Chief Historian Dr. Brian Neumann came to HD in October of 2020, having previously taught at Texas A&M and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, before joining the U.S. Army Center of Military History (CMH) in 2010 and subsequently serving on the Chief of Staff of the Army’s Operation ENDURING FREEDOM Study Group and as the CMH WWI subject matter expert.
In 2022, HD finally published On Our Terms: U.S. Marines in Operation Dewey Canyon, 22 January to 18 March 1969 by Dr. Seth Givens as part of HD’s Vietnam Commemorative Series. Dr. Givens has since begun research on U.S. Marines in Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2003, Volume 1 of HD’s approved 4-volume definitive history project on post-9/11 Marine operations in Iraq.
Other writing projects underway include:
• U.S. Marines in Vietnam: Helicopter Aviation
• U.S. Marines in WWI: Soissons
• Women in the Marine Corps: Volume 3: 2001-2021
• U pdate to Pride, Progress, and Prospects
• M arine Barracks Washington
• U.S. Marines in the Frigate Navy
In addition, in 2023 HD will begin work on:
• 9/11 Commemorative (25th Anniversary)
• A Concise History of the United States Marine Corps (250th Anniversary Commemoration)
• M arines in the Revolutionary War (250th Commemoration)
• U.S. Marines in WWI: Belleau Wood
• A H istory of Marine Corps Aviation, 1976-2001
During 2023, Histories Branch will develop a definitive history project of Marines in Operation Enduring Freedom and continue its work on Oral History Collection.

The Chief Archivist Mr. John Lyles was promoted to Branch Supervisor in 2022. Under his guidance and mentorship, the Archives Branch has taken on key programs previously performed by the former Historical Reference Branch, such as the Commemorative Naming Program and the Lineage and Honors program – key contributions to the Marine Corps goal of honoring exemplary and inspiring service of individuals and promoting unit morale and esprit de corps. The HD priority of effort is to digitize the archive’s holdings to professional standards and make those holdings remotely accessible into a single online archive for outside researchers. This is a massive project, involving more than one million files, photos, and oral histories. Much of the work on this project is supported through the efforts of the Heritage Foundation.
During 2023 the Archives Branch will begin to actively collect materials from Marine Corps units around the globe, in partnership with the Field History Branch, as well as continue to build the digital archive and its accessibility.

The Field History Branch is led by Colonel Erich Wagner. Under his leadership, this IMA Det has been extremely active in its collection efforts – both documentary records and oral histories. Through an incredible, team-wide effort, the IMA Det captured oral histories of the Afghanistan/HKIA NEO Joint Task Force participants from Marines with the MEU to key leaders at Marine Forces Central Command, the last Marine Security Guards in Afghanistan, and Marines and Afghans during Operation Allies Refuge in Quantico and across the United States. This project alone captured 225-plus oral history interviews, and will prove an invaluable source of research material to inform both the public and future decision-makers. Det members also interviewed Marines who served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, and participated in exercises from COLD RESPONSE in Norway and Southern Command’s UNITAS. The Field History Branch also continues to work with the JHRO, where they continue to ensure that joint historical plans and products will include Marine Corps perspectives and contributions.
During 2023, Field History Branch will continue to work closely with Dr. Sheets and the Oral History Program to develop and implement a comprehensive collection plan for collecting key oral histories. In addition, they are making connections with MEF-level exercise and operations cells in order to send participants to largescale exercises and activities in order to collect historical material in real time.

Over the course of 2022, the Education and Distance Learning Departments provided a wide variety of in-person and online programs designed for all ages to engage with the rich history of the United States Marine Corps. The Teachers in Residence collaborate with both departments to connect local area schools to the content and programs of the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Through the combined efforts of the full education team, visitors now have more ways than ever to experience the Museum and discover the legacy of the Marine Corps.

The National Museum of the Marine Corps trunk programs cover Virginia Standards of Learning curriculum in addition to the heritage of the United States Marine Corps for the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The NMMC trunk programs contain artifacts and reproductions that correspond to major conflicts in American history, giving students hands-on opportunities to interact with the history of the Marine Corps. We offer three programs for the elementary level which focus on the difference between the past and present, the Colonial and Revolutionary War eras, and the Civil War. Five programs are available to middle and high schools covering the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Cold War (Korea & Vietnam).
Thanks to collaboration with our Distance Learning Department, the NMMC trunks now exist online in synchronous and asynchronous formats. Teachers in Residence are able to present live virtual trunk programs to interested classrooms. The trunk curriculums are also available to teachers through the Canvas Learning Management System. We estimate that more than 5,000 students were able to engage with online Museum resources this year.
The Teacher in Residence program expanded to Stafford County Public School for the 2021-2022 school year. In their inaugural year, the Stafford Teacher in Residence visited 9 different schools for 56 programs with a total student participation of 1,365 students. The Teacher in Residence program for Prince William County Public Schools continues to thrive. The Prince William Teacher in Residence conducted 88 programs for 9 different schools reaching nearly 3,400 students.
In conjunction with the NMMC’s Education Department, the Teachers in Residence offer a number of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs to students at the Museum, in their classrooms, and virtually. Our “Ships to Shore” program exploring Marine Corps life aboard ship during the Revolutionary War continues to be highly requested. Students investigate the density of objects and fluids through hands-on science demonstrations before constructing their own sea-worthy, loadbearing ship from construction paper, representing wooden ships, and packaging tape, representing the tar or pitch used to waterproof wooden ships.
In addition, the Teachers in Residence created a Medal of Honor trunk to cover standards for the Department of Defense Education Activity history curriculum. The Medal of Honor trunk highlights
a Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipient from World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The Medal of Honor program makes use of artifacts from each of the above conflicts to help students gain a deeper understanding of the circumstances Marines face when deployed. The Medal of Honor program provides students with a deeper understanding of the core Marine Corps values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment.
The Stafford County Teacher in Residence has partnered with SCPS Job Coaches to provide leadership trunk programs for students with special needs. Based on the leadership principles and traits of the United States Marine Corps, leadership programs draw upon the storied lineage of the Marine Corps for positive leadership examples. Through critical thinking exercises, team building challenges, and leadership simulations, students build the necessary communication skills and self-confidence to succeed in the workforce.

The Distance Learning staff with support from Marine Corps Heritage Foundation special assistants created, filmed, and presented synchronous and asynchronous programming to nearly 8,000 virtual visitors over the past year. The Distance Learning staff offers live virtual gallery tours, partners with different organizations to create specialty programs, and facilitates virtual professional military education classes. In addition, the Distance Learning staff supports the Teachers in Residence through the creation of asynchronous learning for students and educators.
Distance Learning virtual tours are hosted by a Teacher in Residence, an Education Specialist, or a Distance Learning staff member. Virtual programs reached national audiences, with specialized programs for 9 different states and several school districts within Virginia. All Distance Learning programs include downloadable supplemental activities for all grade levels to help viewers engage with the content. Distance Learning provides virtual tours through 7 of the Museum’s galleries: Leatherneck, Defending the New Republic, Global Expeditionary Force, WWI, WWII, Cold War (Korea), and Vietnam.

Throughout the past year, Distance Learning developed and presented programs on numerous special topics including Women in the Marine Corps, Month of the Military Child, Black History Month, and Hispanic Heritage Month. Distance Learning presents each special topic multiple times to increase the opportunity for schools and students across the United States to engage with Museum educators. Distance Learning’s presentations on special topics draw thousands of additional online visitors to the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
Distance Learning continues to provide adult educational programming through partnerships with various organizations, such as Veterans Organizations, while facilitating professional military education (PME) courses for both USMC and USMCR organizations.
The Museum’s Education Department continues to organize monthly Family Days, each with a unique theme and with activities for all ages. Family Days commemorated Black History Month in February and Women’s History Month in March. In April, visitors learned about Operation Shufly and Marine involvement in the Vietnam War. Over the Summer, Family Days presented a number of educational topics such as Marine Corps Aviation, Animals in the Marine Corps, and Marines in Space. The Marines in Space Family Day in August featured a panel of active duty and retired Marines involved in several NASA projects, including active duty astronaut Joe Acaba. In September, the Education Department welcomed robotics teams from local schools and from Marine Corps Base Quantico to the Museum for their Robotics Family Day. Over the past year, Family Days have welcomed more than 2,500 visitors to the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
Preschool Playdates began again in March 2022 and also occur monthly. Over the course of the year, 245 preschool students attended in-person Preschool Playdates. Playdate themes correspond to the Museum’s Family Days, often sharing topics. For example, the March Preschool Playdate also celebrated Women’s History. The Education Department with help from the Distance Learning staff began offering virtual Preschool Playdates in September 2022 with over 350 attendees for the very first virtual Preschool Playdate on robotics entitled “Babybots.” Moving forward, each in-person Preschool Playdate will be accompanied by a virtual option to reach preschool students beyond our local area.
Homeschool Days also returned to the Museum this year beginning again in January 2022. Homeschool Days occur quarterly with activities for the early and late elementary school levels as well as middle and high school students. Homeschool Days focus on either STEM topics or Marine Corps History, providing local homeschool students with unique educational experiences within the walls of the Museum. In 2022, more than 500 students attended Homeschool Days.

The Education Department expanded their Summer Camp programs for Summer 2022, offering 3 different camps over 5 weeks for students of different age groups. For two weeks in June, the Museum welcomed 4th Grade to 6th Grade students for two sessions of USMC Tactics and Leadership Camp. Attending students explored the history of the Marine Corps by analyzing the equipment and tactics used during the Revolutionary War, World War I, World War II, and the Cold War. Students also heard from guest speakers emphasizing the importance of leadership to Marines in any era, highlighting the leadership traits and principles of the Marine Corps.
In July, local middle and high school students participated in USMC Leadership Camp. Students took part in leadership simulations, heard from guest speakers, and immersed themselves in the leadership traits and principles of the Marine Corps. Special Assistant for Distance Learning
James Colbert is a production special assistant for the Education Branch, Distance Learning Section. James plans, films, and edits asynchronous educational content for various age groups and grade levels. His keen eye and creative prowess have significantly contributed to the production and delivery of six new asynchronous videos currently available for viewing on the NMMC website.
James assists the Teachers-in-Residence in filming content used during in-person trunk programs, commemorative events, and special topic programming. He has been instrumental in helping to deliver presentations such as “The 20th Anniversary of 9/11” and the most recent series of “Leadership Camp.”
Additionally, James supports all day-to-day administrative duties related to video production, to include assisting the Distance Learning Chief with creating and managing filming schedules and organizing video content.

Special Assistant for Combat Art Program
Kate Brennan joined the Marine Corps Combat Art Program (MCCAP) as a special assistant. Her love of history, art, and museums began in childhood with family visit to museums, historical estates, and national parks. After high school graduation, she spent a summer working with the Highland Support Project teaching art to children in Guatemala. She attended Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) where, after successfully completing the VCU Art Foundations Program her first year, was accepted into the VCU School of the Arts: Craft and Material Studies Department (Ceramics) and subsequently the Art History Department—graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Kate has been assisting the Artist in Residence on events including the student art competition, Combat Art Symposium, the Second Saturday workshops, and developing new content for the MCCAP Facebook and Instagram pages. Kate plans on pursuing her graduate degree in art and artifact conservation in the near future.

Special Assistant for Strategic Communications

Kaylyn Barhart is a social media special assistant for Strategic Communications. She immediately immersed herself into the Museum’s very active social media platforms. Kaylyn helps create content and ensures it is released on the appropriate platform; photographs events and artifacts; updates the website; and posts special event information to online news outlets, community calendars, and social networks. She is creating a new social media feature to help online audiences learn more about the Museum. Kaylyn is a junior at George Mason University, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication.

Special Assistant for Collections Management Section
Kennis Pieper joined the Collections Branch, Collections Management Section in May of 2022 and has already inventoried and photographed hundreds of artifacts including medals, footlockers, uniforms, and artwork. As part of the Collections Management Section, she has the rare opportunity to view and handle almost all of the Museum’s historical artifacts as they begin their journey in the NMMC. Kennis earned her Master of Arts in art and museum studies from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., and her Bachelor of Arts in art history from George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia. Her previous experience in museum collections includes the Smithsonian Institution and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, which provided her with a strong background in collections processing, artifact handling, conducting inventories, photographing artifacts, and documenting artifact conditions.
Special Assistant for Art Collection
Lily Kondrich works as a special assistant for the Collections Branch, Curatorial Section, with the Art Curator. She has a Master of Arts degree in museum studies and Bachelor of Arts degree in history, with an emphasis on military history, from George Washington University, Washington, D.C. Due to her strong background in military history and research, she has been conducting research on various artists and subjects in the art collection. She assists the Art Curator by conducting research that either proves or disproves the validity of the events depicted in a particular piece of the art. She reviews works of art for which there is limited or no cataloging information to help the curator make decisions regarding the potential accessioning or disposition of the artwork. She also works with the Museum’s contracted photographer to update a spreadsheet of works to be photographed, keep track of works as they are photographed, and assist in the handling of the artwork.
Your generous donations allow the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation to support ongoing programming at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

THANK YOU!

Special Assistant for Collections Branch
Melva Kottmyer works as a part-time special assistant providing editorial support to various Museum projects. Melva retired from Federal Service in December of 2021 after 38 years of service. Thirtytwo of those years she provided editorial support to the United States Marine Corps and retired as Head, Doctrine Publishing and Standardization Section. Since joining the Museum in June, she has provided editorial support to various projects, including Combat Art 80th Anniversary Exhibit, Legacy Walk Timeline update, and the new historical galleries that will tell the Marine Corps story from 1976 to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

THERESA LYON
Special Assistant for Education
Theresa Lyon served in the Marine Corps in the communications field. As an editorial special assistant for the Education Branch, Theresa ensures that all written products are well composed and grammatically and historically correct. She edits and corrects all education content on the NMMC website and also assists the Strategic Communications Chief with developing the monthly social media content template for the Museum’s many platforms and helps to create new content for all the platforms.

* The donor listing includes donations received from November 1, 2021 to November 30, 2022
When we talk about legacy gifts, often we refer to gifts through a will or trust. However, there are some assets, such as bank or brokerage accounts, donor advised funds, retirement accounts and life insurance which can be gifted, in whole or in part, directly to a charity, such as the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.
Typically, gift designations are specified by a percentage of the account or policy value. The process is actually quite simple and straightforward. Contact the plan administrator or account manager and request a beneficiary designation form. Complete the form using our legal name – Marine Corps Heritage Foundation – and Tax Identification Number (TIN) – 26-0803466 – and return it. If you’re adding the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation as a beneficiary, please let us know so we can acknowledge your generosity.
If you, like Gordy, have already made a gift to the MCHF from your will or trust but haven’t notified us, or, if you are considering doing so, please contact Gayle Union, (703) 586-7463, or union@marineheritage.org.
THANK YOU!

Gordon (Gordy) Evans’ older cousin was a Navy corpsman on Okinawa in the battle of 1945 and his father was a SgtMaj in the Army in 1918. Gordon, however, idolized the Marines. The John Wayne movie, Flying Leathernecks, which detailed the exploits of U.S. Marine Corps aviators in WWII, was a favorite and helped fuel his dream of becoming a Naval Aviator.
George Murphy, an actor and one-term U.S. Senator from CA, and a golf buddy of his dad, got him an appointment to the Air Force Academy, but Gordy, much to his father’s chagrin, didn’t want to spend four years at a military institution – he wanted to go to a civilian university. As a freshman at Cornell, he joined the Air Force ROTC, but didn’t like how things were done, so in 1965, five days after his 18th birthday, Gordy enlisted in the Marine Corps and had his sights on becoming a pilot. He was told to enroll in the PLC program because he could go to Vietnam as a commissioned officer, which is what Gordy wanted to do. After graduation, during his pre-commissioning physical he failed the eye exam, which nixed his opportunity to be a pilot. As a Regular Commissioned Officer, he intended to be a career Marine anyway, so he attended TBS (Alpha Co. 1-69). A chance game of pool and a few beers
with a Navy Chief corpsman changed everything. The corpsman told Gordy he seemed like a decent fellow and asked, if he still wanted to fly, he should come by the Quantico airfield dispensary where the corpsman would personally administer the eye exam, and that Gordy would be pleased with the results – and he was! Having passed the eye exam, his company officer put him back in the aviation pipeline. He went through Air Force flight training, flew jets and earned USAF Pilot’s wings, but still wanted those Navy wings of gold. He subsequently earned his Naval Aviator wings and flew combat missions in Vietnam. He volunteered to stay in country with the 1st ANGLICO, where he and his radio team provided air support for the ROK Marines. Gordon intended to go on Active Reserves, but his year-round job as a farmer didn’t afford him time off for training. Although a disappointment, Gordon never lost his affinity for the Corps.

“The life lessons acquired in the Corps have applicability to any discipline you choose to follow in your life – you learned how to deal with people and take care of them regardless of the situation. For example, I would never ask my troops (or my employees) to do anything I wouldn’t or couldn’t do, and if I didn’t know how to do it, I had them teach me. I would not be who I am today had it not been for the values, ethics and leadership that I was honored to receive in the Corps,” says Gordon. He added, “As a firm believer in education my legacy gift to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation will provide support to an organization that educates visitors about the Marines’ significant role in our nation’s history – and that’s very important to me.”
