This year we will begin a two year travelling exhibit of Marine Corps artwork from the Museum collection. Our first stop is the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona beginning in February for about six months. The show will travel to other museums in the western U.S. until early 2023 and we hope to see you when the show comes to a town near you.

STATE OF THE MARINE CORPS HISTORY DIVISION For the past forty-one years, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation has provided those interested in Marine Corps history with a comprehensive account of the rich and colorful lineage of the United States Marine Corps.

Of the numerous programs which the Foundation supports, the Interns and Special Assistants Program has played an integral role in fulfilling the objectives of the Marine Corps History Division.

2020 proved to be an unconventional year for both the Foundation and History Division. For the first time in some years, the History Division operated without the assistance of the traditional summer intern program, allowing special assistants and fellows to join archivists, historians and other employees in accomplishing their duties. Despite the absence of summer interns and COVID-19’s global impact, special assistants and fellows continued to carry out the Foundation’s goal of preserving and promulgating the history, tradition and cultures of the United States Marine Corps.

NMMC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

Throughout 2020 the NMMC Education Department offered programming designed to engage patrons of all ages in the rich content of the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

Staff began the year focused on delivering interactive and engaging instruction through our History and STEM Trunk Programs, Family Days, Homeschool Programming and PreSchool Playdates. However, when the COVID-19 closure occurred, the Education Department quickly adapted and transitioned from in-person programming to supporting audiences in the virtual setting. The Education Department actually saw the Museum’s closure as an opportunity to generate a variety of original content on Marine Corps topics for students and families which could be accessed virtually.

The newest series of programs, called NMMC at Home, are educational modules that cover a wide variety of topics and are available under the “Education Resources” tab on the website.

VIRTUAL NMMC AT HOME PROGRAMS The first two virtual NMMC at Home programs created — The History, Natural Science, and Legacy of the Wilkes Expedition (1838-1842) and JAG — incorporate video, downloadable content and, for JAG, live-stream interaction with Museum staff. Both programs had 100 participants each in their debuts.

Included in the Wilkes program is a three-part video outlining the history and legacy of the expedition, science experiments, activities on botany, taxonomy and becoming a naturalist, as well as an activity on how to create a museum display.

JAG follows a Museum caper in which the students analyze a “crime scene,” collect clues and evidence, interview suspects and witnesses and, once they have a suspect in custody, write their legal argument for the prosecution!

HISTORY TRUNK PROGRAMS The National Museum of Marine Corps’ History Trunk Programs cover Virginia Standards of Learning curriculum in addition to the heritage of the United States Marine Corps for elementary, middle and high school levels. Two programs are currently offered at the elementary level which focus on the Colonial/Revolutionary War era and the differences between the past and the present. At the middle and high school levels, there are five different Trunk Programs: Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War I, World War II and Cold War (Korea-Vietnam). Prior to the closure in March, the History Trunk Program was able to reach more than 6,000 students for in-person instruction. In the months following closure, the Teacher-in-Residence (TIR) worked closely with the Distance Learning staff to deliver

DISTANCE LEARNING STUDIO The NMMC Distance Learning Department continued to grow significantly throughout 2020. With the unexpected closure of the Museum, the demand for distance learning programming increased exponentially. This past year we successfully presented more than 30 programs reaching almost 1,500 students. The Distance Learning Department also had the pleasure of presenting virtual field trips and collaborating with veteran’s organizations to do so. Distance Learning staff partnered with Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Program dedicated to the health and well-being of veterans and their families, to deliver a World War I virtual field trip as part of Home Base’s “Adventure Series” program.

Our synchronous programming has been extremely well received allowing staff members here at the Museum to present virtual Trunk Programs, whereby students connect with a Museum educator online through videoconferencing technology. Additionally, the Distance Learning Team and TIR are currently working to extend virtual programming by having asynchronous videos of the Trunk Programs available online for those teachers that do not have the technological capabilities for a video call. As a result of these initiatives we hope to greatly increase the number of students we can reach with engaging United States History and Marine Corps content.

FAMILY DAYS Prior to the closure, the Education Department hosted two Family Days.

In order to reach out to more people and provide greater opportunities for Scouts, the Education staff decided in late 2019 to join Family Day themes with Scouting badge requirements. Our Family Day and Scouting tie was met with overwhelming enthusiasm and doubled attendance numbers at our 2019 September Robotics Family Day. In January, our Family Day theme was fitness and we connected the program to several personal fitness badges for BSA, Girl Scouts, American Heritage Girls, Trail Life USA and Pathfinders. We typically do not see large attendance

numbers in January, but we had more than 1,100 participants, up from 75 in 2019. In February, our Family Day was hosted on February 23 for the 75th Anniversary of the flag raising on Iwo Jima. The families and Scouts became “war correspondents” for the day, watching a brief video on WWII war correspondents, including information on Joe Rosenthal’s famous photo. Then they wrote their own news articles, interviewed veterans and created an art project based on the island of Iwo Jima. We had more than 2,000 participants for this Journalism Family Day, up from just over 100 for our Family Day in 2019!

PRE-SCHOOL PLAYDATE Two Pre-School Playdates were held prior to the COVID-19 closure; Let it Snow in January and Love is in the Air in February, for approximately 320 participants total over the two days. Participants made thematic crafts, listened to stories, sang songs and played in our special Pre-School Playdate play space.

HOME SCHOOL DAYS One in-person Home School Day, entitled “Lighter than Air,” was hosted on February 5. Almost 900 students were in attendance. During this program, the students watched an introductory video on the science and history behind gas laws, pressure and the machines Marines use that utilize lighter than air technology, like balloons, blimps, and Landing Craft Air Cushions (LCACs). The students participated in several projects including a barrage balloon maze and creating and launching their own hot air balloon.

During the last week of January, the Education Department hosted “SeaPerch Camp” for 20 homeschool students during which they built underwater remotely operated vehicles, or ROVs. SeaPerch is a nationwide educational program as well as a competition that aims to increase participation in robotics programs. SeaPerch introduces students to basic engineering, design and science concepts while fostering key skills including critical thinking, collaboration and creativity. The students who participated had all participated in previous Homeschool Science programs and were required to submit an application to be a part of the program. They wrote short answers to questions asking how science will influence their lives after high school.

For three days, the students constructed the ROVs, which involved cutting PVC, drilling drainage holes, waterproofing the motors, soldering the circuit boards and more. The Education team also presented information on how the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps have had an impact on exploration throughout their histories. We hosted a member of the Underwater Archeology Branch from the Naval History and Heritage Command to give a presentation on the importance of underwater archeology. On the fourth day, the whole group traveled to the Naval Surface Warfare Center to tour the facility and test the newly constructed ROVs with the engineers at the center.

HISTORY DAY The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, with assistance from the Museum’s Teacher-in-Residence, continues to sponsor a Marine Corps related category of the National History Day Contest in Region 5. At the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, the TIR visited multiple classrooms within Prince William County Public Schools to introduce the National History Day theme of “Breaking Barriers” in history and worked with more than 200 students to select topics and begin the initial stages of research. There were a number of entries connecting the Marine Corps with the History Day theme.

She visited the Museum, interviewed our outreach curator, Kater Miller, and included that interview as a central piece of her exhibit. She researched and explained how the Marine Corps modified tracked landing vehicles (originally called Alligators and used as civilian rescue vehicles) to become important tools for amphibious landing and island hopping campaigns that took place in the Pacific during World War II. The design changes helped the Marines with “breaking barriers” to successful amphibious assaults throughout the Pacific

The Teacher-in-Residence program allows a selected teacher the opportunity to develop curriculum that teaches the rich history and heritage of the United States Marine Corps and introduces the National Museum of the Marine Corps to teachers and students from across the country.

The primary focus of the TIR program is to deliver in-person programming to area schools through our History Trunk Program, however additional TIR programs and initiatives include the following: • Student Leadership Programs—This one-day program reaches both advanced level students seeking leadership programs to help them as they assume leadership roles in their schools and prepare for college as well as atrisk students who may not otherwise complete their high school education. The Teacher-in-Residence is currently working with Prince William County Schools to make this program available virtually for students.

• Educator Leadership Program—This program is designed for principals, teachers, college counselors and administrators to assist them in creating a program for fellow educators that will incorporate Marine Corps History to boost morale and find focus for their school year. This is a great way for the Museum to connect with local teachers and the school community.

2019-2020 CONCERTO COMPETITION FOR HIGH SCHOOL MUSICIANS Eight high school musicians from the far corners of the United States gathered on February 22, 2020 in John Philip Sousa Band Hall at the Marine Barracks Annex for the final round of the Annual Student Concerto Competition hosted by “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in conjunction with the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.

The finalists were chosen from a pool of more than 100 applicants based on their musical talent. In this public performance, the students played their prepared concertos before a panel of judges consisting of Marine Band Director Col Jason K. Fettig, Assistant Directors Maj Ryan J. Nowlin and Capt Bryan P. Sherlock, and guest adjudicator Dr. Christopher M. Cicconi, Assistant Professor of Music Education at Towson University.

Because there was such close competition between so many very talented young musicians, for the first time in the history of the Concerto Competition, a third-place winner was chosen. Due to the conditions caused by the pandemic, the United States Marine Band had to make the difficult decision to discontinue plans for the 2021 concerto competition. However, the Band is very excited to launch a new phase of their competition this spring and invite all string, piano and harp players to look for next year’s competition application in May of 2021. Musicians of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments will be able to compete once again in 2022-2023 competition.

GALLERIES & GROUNDS Continued work on the historical galleries was a primary focus in 2020, along with the completion of the Legacy Walk expansion. Preparations also began in late summer to expand Semper Fidelis Memorial Park which covers the grounds adjacent to the Museum. Walking trails will be extended by more than a mile allowing for additional memorial paver bricks and new monument locations to honor the memory and sacrifices of all military personnel, their families and friends.

Due to COVID-19, the Foundation made the decision to delay the 2021 Awards nomination process, which would normally be well underway at this point, to the fall of 2021 to ensure that the 2020 recipients receive the recognition they deserve. The 2020 Annual Awards Program will be held on 24 April 2021. At that time, we will honor eighteen individuals from across the Nation for their outstanding portrayal of Marine Corps history and service in compelling works of art and literature. The 2020 winners were notified of their selection and received their awards but will be recognized on stage in the spring.

The Foundation was very pleased to select Major General Charles Bolden USMC (Ret), a Marine aviator, astronaut and NASA Administrator, for the 2020 Lieutenant General John A. Lejeune Recognition of Exemplary Leadership Award. The John A. Lejeune Recognition for Exemplary Leadership is bestowed each year on someone who has demonstrated leadership in their chosen profession, or appointed or elected position, that is clearly exemplary and worthy of emulation. The recipient must epitomize the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment and practice the leadership traits and principles ascribed to by the United State Marine Corps.

The Major Megan McClung Award, given for a distinguished example of reporting by an individual covering U.S. Marines abroad, was awarded to Dan Lamothe for his article in The Washington Post, “Maybe This is How Vietnam Vets Felt: Americans Who Fought in Afghanistan Wait to See How Their War Ends.”

The General Oliver P. Smith Award, given for a distinguished example of local news reporting by an individual that illuminates the U.S. Marine Corps’ relationship with local communities, was awarded to Erika Ritchie for her article in The Orange County Register, “Marines Who Went to ‘Hell and Back’ Nearly 10 Years Ago Rely on Camaraderie, Community to Heal.”

The Master Sergeant Tom Bartlett Award, named for the late Managing Editor of Leatherneck magazine and a leading Marine photojournalist and given for superior writing pertinent to Marine Corps history during the preceding year by an enlisted writer in any medium, was awarded to LCpl Ryan Hageali USMC for his work entitled “A Marine’s Mom.”

PLANNED GIVING When we talk about legacy gifts, often we refer to gifts through a will or trust.

However, there are some assets, such as bank or brokerage accounts, donor advised funds, retirement accounts and life insurance which can be gifted, in whole or in part, directly to a charity, such as the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.

Typically, gift designations are specified by a percentage of the account or policy value. The process is actually quite simple and straightforward. Contact the plan administrator or account manager and request a beneficiary designation form. Complete the form using our legal name – Marine Corps Heritage Foundation – and Tax Identification Number (TIN) – 26-0803466 – and return it. Anthony (Tony) Vanchieri grew up in a small town in New Jersey with limited opportunities. As a young boy, Tony always admired the Marine Corps, having listened to his stepfather’s stories about his Marine Corps service in Korea and how he felt that the Corps experience was different from that of the other branches of the military – physically, emotionally and mentally demanding with a certain “esprit de corps” seemingly unique to the Marine Corps.
