Maye’s TYPOGRAPHY Journal Mariem Andrade

Fall 2013

Date: October 3rd, 2013 at 2:30pm Location: Main St.

On my short break between class and work, walking down Main St., I saw this Restaurant’s name, which is actually my initials. Mariem Isabella Andrade (MIA) haha.... Also, my handwriting is very similar to a scriptfont.

Date: October 6th, 2013 Location: Main St.

Before this project was assigned, I hadn’t notice this beautiful mural right before the The Alley Kat (where I rehearse). This mural has many things painted on it, but the “I LOVE YOU” is the only bright yellow and centered script on the wall. It made me happy.

Date: October 6th, 2013 Location: Main St.

I was a bit early to rehearsal and hungry, so I decided to eat at the restaurant right next door to the bar.. When I sat, I was facing this frame. The edgy, yet curved ‘A,’ and the weird scoop of the ‘l’ caught my attention... over all, the frame was very eye catching.

Date: October 6th, 2013 at 2pm Location: Tacos To Gogo Restaurant on Main St.

Tacos To Gogo is a mexican restaurant right next door to The Alley Kat. When I stood up to get napkins and a fork, I saw this awesome restrooms sign. I’ve always like black lettering style, but had never seen it used for a restroom sign, so I decided to snap a shot.

Date: October 6th, 2013 at 2pm Location: Main St.

This particular sunday I parked at school and walked for 2 hours down Main St. until I reached The Alley Kat. On my journey I passes a store with this window sign, it isn’t the best picture, but I just really liked the color scheme and the saying, “Be fearless” in a simple font.

Date: October 6th, 2013 at 6pm Location: Main St.

On my way back to school from the Alley Kat, on Main St., I decided to look around Forever 21. I thought I would find cool T-Shirt graphic, but instead I was stunned by this wall (going down the stairs). It reminded me of a word cloud, then I ended up straighting up after reading, “Keep an eye on your posture!

Date: October 6th, 2013 at 7pm Location: Some bar on Main St.

On my way back to school from the Alley Kat, I really needed to use the restroom and this place tooked decent.. In the hall to the restoroom, I freaked out thinking I saw a ghost, but it was my reflection. I love the figure ground the mirror creates from different angles, and the “PERFECTION SPIRIT in glittered letters.

Date: October 6th, 2013 Location: Main St.

I was in the car when I realized the cool font on my purse, so I took a picture of it. This would be a Bauhaus based-modern font.

Date: October 12th, 2013 Location: My room

I was looking through my library, (specifically lookging for serif fonts) and I found a couple, but this one was my favorite. I like the color contrast between the different shades of blue incorporated in the letters, and how they complete the cover with the picture elements.

Date: October 8th, 2013 at 11pm Location: intersection of 45 and E Tidwell

Chacho’s is a mexican restaurant I pass by every night when I’m going home. I liked the incorporation of the Mexican Mariachi sombrero design inside the letters (it also reminded me of tacos). Also, the twisted left side of the ‘h,’ i think, was a very nice extra detail.

Date: October 11th, 2013 Location: Main St.

Walking down Main St. after rehearsal, I crossed paths with this awesome clock at a red light. I love the combination of the humanist/old style font of the letters with the modern style of the roman numerlas. Also, the way “MAIN AT TEXAS - HOUSTON wraps around the arms, completing the clock deisgn.

Date: October 12th, 2013 at 12pm Location: 45S

I was on my way home from a friend’s house and I took a different route. I came across this sign for the first time and wasn’t able to take a picture, but since I REALLY liked it, I googled it...... Loved the use of the “Ü.”

Date: October 9th, 2013 at 2pm Location: 45N on my way to school

A hand written, geometric sans-serif! From the German Bauhaus school! I lost count of how many time I tried taking this picture. Turns out I just needed to switch lanes and have someone else take it for me... ha..ha.... I really just loved the random motivation and inspiration this sign gives me daily.

Date: October 6th, 2013 at 2pm Location: Natachee’s Restaurant, next to the Alley Kat, on Main St.

The mixture of the different fonts caught my attention at first, then I fell in love with the fun serifs in, “SUPPER’N.”

Date: October 6th, 2013 at 2pm Location: The Tinderbox is a store right next to The Alley Kat.

The almost humanist sans-serif font caught my eye; for example, even though the bar of the H is not centerd, it still the same height as the middle bar of the E, or how the top part of the R plays with the dimension of the D.. etc. I just loved the unproportional balance within the letters and how they look together.

Date: October 6th, 2013 at 2pm Location: The Tinderbox’s window display

Serifs! I was determined on finding as many serif fonts as I could.. In this sign though, if you look close, you can almost see the adjustment of the tracking (kerning), like between the NO and both sides of the X.

Date: October 6th, 2013 at 2pm Location: The Tinderbox’s window display

Serifs! Though is hand written, is very precise in the weight, and tracking of the letters, make this picture one of my favorites. I love the detail involved with the repetition design, sand clocks, and stars creating the relation between the deisgn and the words.

Date: October 6th, 2013 at 2pm Location: My Flaming Heart’s window display

Aside from the serifs at the bottom line, “THE BEHRENS DRUG COMPANY,” I thought the way the person who wrote, “NARCOTIC” and the numbers, was interesting because he/she was almost mimicking the top font.

Date: October 6th, 2013 at 2pm Location: My Flaming Heart’s window display

More serifs!!! The font of the title, “THE BESTFIT ASSORTMENT No. 175” actually plays with the different weights within a letter, making it a transitional font.

Date: October 6th, 2013 at 2pm Location: My Flaming Heart’s window display

I really wanted to go in, but sadly the shop was closed... I caught myself really looking at everything on the display and found some more serifs and decided to snap a shot.

Date: October 6th, 2013 at 2pm Location: On Main St. near The Alley Kat Bar

This is a cool shop right next to The Alley Kat. Aside from wacky awesome dresses, you can find really interesting antiques, and weird stuff (see pg. 20-22). The caligraphic/Black Lettering style font suits the shop perfectly.

Date: October 6th, 2013 at 3pm Location: The Alley Kat Bar on Main St.

This is where I have rehearsal every sunday. Although I liked how all the letters are lowercase, I happened to notice the sign had serifs and began thinking of the entire image of the bar. The font I believe is Garamond (old style), which fits perfectly with the old, almost vitorian decor inside.

Date: October 6th, 2013 at 2pm Location: On Main St. near The Alley Kat Bar

This is a restaurant right next to The Alley Kat Bar. I liked how the font is very different, playful, and red. The place itself is very colorful and different; the chairs are different colors, the walls are covered with all sorts of crazy wallpaper. Lastly, it has serifs. :)

Date: October 12th, 2013 at 10am Location: My room

I was looking through my library and thought the way the ‘A’ mimiked japanese letters was ingeinous.

Date: October 12th, 2013 at 10am Location: My room

This picture shows a sandwich of 2 different serif fonts (in caps, lowercase, italic, and bold) incorporated in the old philosophy textbook, squeezed by 2 books with regular and plain helvetica like fonts. Which one did you look at first? WELLNESS OR WISDOM?

Date: October 12th, 2013 at 10am Location: My room

I was specifically looking for serif fonts in my library and.. Even though TRUE TO THE FAITH and THE BOOK OF MORMON are both religious books, the designer probably chose the same font because is an old style classic.

Date: October 12th, 2013 at 10am Location: My room

An old purse’s decorative tag with indented lettering is my only rubbed font. Though the rubbing didn’t come out as well as I thought, I really liked the NEIMAN and MARCUS almost mirroring eachother. Also, the cursive, unison and perfect collective balance of the name.

Date: October 2th, 2013 at 9am Location: Dining table at my house

I was having breakfast when I saw this slip and noticed the serifs, so I took a picture. Same font in both, caps and lower case. Pretty font..

Date: October 17th, 2013 at 8am Location: O’Kane Gallery Storage room

I loved how the shape of the letters mimick the art itself.

Date: October 17th, 2013 at 8am Location: O’Kane Gallery’s office

Even though it has serifs, the font of the title, “POSTERS,” reminded me of the blocky style of De Stijl. So I deicded to take a picture, since I hadn’t found many like this.

Date: October 17th, 2013 at 8am Location: O’Kane Gallery’s office

This book cover is actually done by a british designer names Abram Games. It surprised me to find out that he found a job as a, “lettering artist” at 18 years old!

Date: October 17th, 2013 at 8am Location: O’Kane Gallery’s storage room

At work, I was looking for take and I found this cool one which actually had the brand printed on it. I found it interesting and cool how the bottom part of the stem of the L is bent, simulating the tape.
