WHAT IS A LEARNINGBASED APPROACH 

Literature-based reading instruction involves teaching reading through exposure to literature. In other words, students learn how to analyze texts by reading and analyzing texts. The focus of literaturebased instruction is to help children develop literacy skills through having real-life literary experiences. This is in stark contrast to programs that teach reading by talking about grammar rules and showing students one word or sentence at a time. In literaturebased instruction, everything is instead based in literary texts.

BACKGROUND Language Based Approach Language Based Approach is one of the method of teaching literature in English that used literary text for the specific drills design to build the languages skills rather than focusing on the literary skills. In 1988 Carter verified that (LBA) helped students to focus attention on the way as to how the language is used.

THE LITERATURE CORNER

MAGAZINE

Ambato 15, Mayo 219 

Proponents of literature-based instruction usually focus on the importance of using authentic literature, rather than the "canned" variety found in basal textbooks and other programs.

Books that are written to teach children to read tend to be boring, contrived and less vibrant than authentic literature.

Many teachers choose literature-based instruction because they feel that it addresses higher level thinking skills than basal level instruction. Rather than forcing children to give pat answers to basic questions about a story, literature-based instruction encourages children to think deeply and share their thoughts about a story.

Reading authentic literature can improve vocabulary, reading comprehension, reading ability and language growth.

DISADVANTAGES 

proaches.

From the teacher's

perspective, teaching using a literature-based approach can be more difficult than using other approaches. First-time teachers may find it especially challenging, since literaturebased approaches inherently have less structure than many other ap-

Teachers also may struggle with effectively assessing a child's progress. Because literaturebased instruction is less widely used than other forms of instruction, teachers often spend hours choosing literature selections, as

well as developing activities and evaluations that reflect the content.

EXAMPLE 1

GENRE ANALYSIS

In the implementation of genre analysisin literature review writing, the writing instructors and supervisors can show the students explicitly the purpose, elements, and linguistics features of literature review. By analysing how writers conventionally sequence material to achieve particular purposes, the writing ins-

tructors and supervisors can begin to describe each element and show how they are realized linguistically. This information can then be used by students as models to develop their skill in writing literature review.

EXAMPLE 2 DISCOURSE ANALYSIS

Discourse Analysis focuses

on the structure of naturally spoken language as found in conversation interviews, commentaries and speeches. It is an attempt to disciver linguistic regularities in discourse using gramatical, phonological and semantic criteria

HOW THIS TECHNIQUE IS APPLIED IN LITERATURE

Ambato 15, Mayo 219

The language-based approach is used to incorporate literature and language skills. LBA framework is used to create these activities to provide meaningful interpretation and evaluation of the text. In the classroom, teachers guide students on the specific literature piece based on their proficiency level, lexical and discourse knowledge. These creative activities will also allow teachers to adapt the activities in accordance to the text used in the classroom and also based on students' proficiency levels.

OBJECTIVE OF LANGUAGE– BASED APPROACH 

The paramount aim of language-based approaches is to be learner-centred, activity based and to advance with particular attention to the style of the language in use.

The approach focuses on standard, widely used and widely known procedures for enhancing the development of language, competence and sensitivity. This approach

leads to productive use of the language

CONCLUSION 

The language-based teaching strategies are student-centred and activity-oriented. These activities should help students with intensive and extensive reading, and understanding, as well as to enjoy the language and content of the literary text.

The overall aim of languagebased approach to using literature is to let the students derive the benefits of communicative and other activities for language improvement within the context of suitable works of literature.

All that the teacher needs to do is to keep a balance between literature and language and select the activities and tasks and presents them confidence.
