English 4 Cycle 2 2011/2012 English 4 has two distinct components: “Before the Regents” and “After the Regents”. Each of you was programmed in to this course because you need to pass the exam next month. Therefore, it is my job to help you as best I can to pass this test. After the Regents, we will transition in to what will seem like a separate course, an elective called “Outsiders in Literature. Unit 1-Reading Comprehension Strategies (12/14-12/23) The first unit will focus on the following skills and concepts: 1. How do I take notes during a read aloud? 12/06 2. How do I select and apply learning strategies during a read aloud? 12/07-09 3. How do I use the multiple choice questions to help me listen with purpose during the 2nd read aloud? 12/07-12/09 4. What are some strategies I can use to answer multiple choice questions? 12/1212/14 5. How should I notate the text(s) while reading? 12/15-12/16 6. How can I check my answers? 12/19 7. Practicing the test and rating it 12/20-12/22 Unit 2-Literary Analysis of theme and literary elements (01/3-01/5) The second unit will focus on the following skills and concepts: 1. How should I notate during this part of the test? January 3-5 2. How do I discuss theme? January 5-7 3. What are some literary elements and how do I discuss them? 1/10-1/13 4. Practicing and Rating 1/14-1/15 Unit 3-Critical Lens Essays 01/6-01/11 The third unit will focus on the following skills and concepts: 1. How do I write an introduction? (restate, interpret, agree/disagree) January 17 2. What books have I read? What are their themes, characters, settings, authors and what literary elements does the author use? January 18 3. How do I develop my essay using an analysis of a literary element? January 19-20 4. How do I conclude my essay? January 21 5. Practice test and rating –Until Regents
