Dear Members, As we roll into a new month, we have more exciting news to share from the Salamander golf resort collection. We are thrilled to announce that Reunion, Hammock Beach’s sister resort, has been selected as the new home site of the North Florida PGA of America. North Florida PGA Executive Director and CEO, Rich Smith and World Golf Hall of Fame Member Annika Sorenstam, joined me this past Friday at Reunion to deliver this announcement. This selection further enforces Salamander’s commitment to grow the game of golf and respect the traditions of the game. It is the first time any of the PGA’s 41 sections has chosen a resort as its home base. We are creating a true hub for the game, in the center of the golf capital of the world – Florida. This month, I encourage you to get out and play, especially with the younger members of your family. They are the future of our game.

I am happy to announce
• With regards to residency at HB – 36% are full time residents, 12% are residents 6-9 months, 52% are here fewer than 6 months per year
that our member survey has been completed with good participation at approximately 35% on the part of the membership. We are in the process of summarizing the data and will be distributing the results very shortly. In the meantime, I have summarized some of what I think are the more important results from the survey.
A few areas that rated very well were: • Coffee Bar, Sushi Bar, Atlantic Grille and Delfinos – both in service and quality • Value of the Member Prix Fixe menus • Golf Shop, Atlantic Grille, Fitness center and Membership staff service rated high • Accurate billing on club statements Some areas for improvement were: • Bunkers at the Ocean Course – which is being addressed this year and Greens at the Conservatory • Cleanliness in pool bathrooms and spa locker rooms • Overall club maintenance and cleanliness A raffle of prizes was conducted for those members who took the time to complete the survey. In response to member feedback to freshen up the wine selection at the member functions, the Food and Beverage Committee put together a small group to do a blind wine tasting with Jeffrey Sacchet in an attempt to make some positive changes to the member wine offerings. We think we have made some good changes which will upgrade the selection of wines. Hess Select Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are being brought back to replace the Bonterra Chardonnay and Joel Gott Cabernet Sauvignon. We will be substituting the Shooting Star Merlot with Rodney Strong Merlot. Hopefully, this will meet with membersâ€™ satisfaction. All other wines will stay the same. These changes will come about at all Member Manager Receptions, Member Mixers and offered on the member prixe fixe menus in Delfinos and the Atlantic Grille, once the inventories of the existing wines have been depleted.
Progress continues on the Ocean Golf Course with the eradication of the mole cricket problem. With continued warm weather, we should begin to see significant improvement in the rough throughout the golf course and the course should round into shape just in time for the upcoming Club Championship scheduled for May 18-19. Once again, congratulations to those members who participated in the Menâ€™s Interclub golf competition against Plantation Bay Country Club, Grand Haven and Sugar Mill. For the second time in three years they were victorious and brought the trophy back to Hammock Beach. CHIP AND RUN WITH A 3 WOOD BY BRAD HAUER, DIRECTOR OF GOLF
Todayâ€™s tip will help you with a tricky shot that happens all too often. Todayâ€™s tip takes us to the base of the green on 2nd hole at the Conservatory or the 15th hole on the Ocean Course. If your second shot comes up short, your ball will more than likely roll back down into this collection area. This shot is extremely difficult as you must get the ball up and over the false front of the green. Many times I see players trying to lob the ball up over the hill with a sandwedge, resulting in leaving the ball short. The secret to this shot is to play a low running shot, not a high lob shot. Choosing a 6 iron or putter are good choices, but next time try your 3 wood instead.

Simply play the shot as you would a basic chip shot. In your setup, place the ball position in the back of your stance and let the face of the club stay square to the target. The swinging motion with your arms would be similar to a hybrid swing between a putting and chipping stroke; keeping your body very still with no weight shift, let your arms come back with a slight hinge in the wrists. Feel the clubhead stay low to the ground on the way back and on the way through to your finish. By using a 3 wood for this shot, you will let the mass of the clubhead do the work for you. You will be amazed at how much easier it is to run the ball up the hill. It is worth your time to take several minutes to practice this shot; it really only takes about 30 balls of practice before you start to get the feel for this shot.

TO HIT BETTER VOLLEYS, REMEMBER TO LEAD WITH THE BOTTOM EDGE OF THE RACQUET B Y H A R R Y G I L B E R T, DIRECTOR OF TENNIS
Many players tend to volley with their forehand or backhand groundstroke grip which keeps the racquet face too closed.
The closed racquet face will send volleys down rather than out into the court, either causing balls into the net or too short in your opponentâ€™s court. In the first photo, I have my forehand grip and you can see the racquet face is closed. In the second, I have switched to a more continental grip (by moving my index knuckle a quarter turn to the top of the handle) and now I am leading with the bottom edge. This will send the ball deeper in the court and result in a better volley. This grip change might feel as though you are not as stable at first, so get some practice in on leading with the bottom edge.

Ladies Tennis Play Day Over 30 members and guests participated in a Ladies Play Day in conjunction with a HEAD Demo Day on Saturday, March23rd at The Tennis Center. The participants demoed the new HEAD racquets, participated in a Round Robin, followed by a courtside luncheon including a raffle for prizes.

National Physical Fitness and Sports Month by Thor Holm, Director o f S p a , R e c re a t i o n & F i t n e s s
Hammock Beach Resort is teaming up with the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition in honor of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. During the month of May, we challenge you to include a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity every day. Did you know that regular physical activity increases your chances of living a longer, healthier life? It also reduces your risk for high blood pressure, heart disease and some types of cancer. Yet in Florida we ranked 34th in the nation for physical activity and Flagler County Ranked 23rd out of 67 counties. Flagler county ranked very high relative to access to recreational activities three times better than the national average. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that people: • Aim for 2 ½ hours of moderate aerobic activity each week. Moderate Activity includes things like fast walking, dancing, swimming and raking leaves. • Do muscle strengthening activities-like lifting weights and using exercise bands- at least two times per week. No matter what shape you are in, together we can rise to the beach livin g | 14

Objective: To offer a quality 3 hour golf camp to juniors ages 8–15 years. Clinics would encompass teaching all phases of the golf game to a beginner to intermediate junior player. Teaching skills in full swing (Drivers and irons), putting, chipping, sand shots and certain course strategies and having loads of fun. Program includes: • 3 instructional hours by our Golf professional staff every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 9am-Noon • Unlimited golf ball usage • Daily contests • Clubs provided if necessary

Objective: Focus on the fundamentals of tennis for juniors ages 8-15 years. Juniors will be taught basic tennis skills, live ball drills, match play, competitive games and tennis etiquette. Golf Director of Golf – Brad Hauer Brad is a PGA member and has over 25 years of experience in teaching and coaching the game of golf. Brad has learned from some of the best instructors in the country which helped him become one of the top instructors in the area. Brad has appeared on the Golf Channel numerous times.
