DAY VIEW FROM AFAR

The idea of the project is not the designing center itself, but an extensive linear movement vertical to the coast line, over the sea, which takes the visitor away from the city, creating a new state of life, implying a new “city within the city”. An unfinished line, starting from the urban setting of Thessaloniki to an undetermined end, which has the potential to expand and chase the infinite, like a “fine city” of Calvino. Architecture escapes the philosophy of a compactly designed synthesis, as it is purposed to expand in the future, following the city’s growing needs. It is the beginning of a new environment that is totally dependent on the dynamics, needs and desires of an evolving society. Within the above limitations, considering our desire to compliment all different aspects of design, the pluralism of the individual components is catalytic for the project’s form. The movement on the platform in reality happens on three narrow piers that interact with each other as long as the sea. Buildings and secondary facilities are provocatively alien to the experience of this walk. The visitor has the choice to remotely observe them, analyze them and if desired, approach and explore them. This characteristic, combined with the variety of forms, colors and textures these buildings come in, adds to the visitor’s sense of being among an exhibit of a larger scale.

Model 1. folding - suspended tent In the first project, we designed a structure of a complex nature. It is mostly an experiment on origami tent, to discover how the rules of a suspended model apply to a material that is defined by a different grid

materials: paper - thread bamboo skewers - pins

Model 2.

Tensile tent

The second concept is about tensing an elastic fabric to its maximum in order to build a model of a tensile tent. Each element of the structure alters the curves of the fabric and creates the desirable sheltered space

materials: elastic fabric - balsa stick bamboo skewers - thread

Model 3.

Inflatable tent

The concept of the last model is an inflatable tent. Its shape is a result of a frame, made of wires, that is later filled by a balloon to its maximum point.

materials: wire - balloon

This is an environment where the user will be able to create routes within the city of Thessaloniki, based on hotspots of multiple interest or their proximity. The application provides clear instructions on every turn. After that, the user can upload the configured route, adding audio tour or music, so that others can follow and rate. This app, besides guiding both tourists and residents through the city, aims to allow them to exchange experiences and share their stories.
