STRUCTURAL VOID - Consolidation Processes of the Residual Space

Final Academic Project and Master Thesis Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade de Lisboa - July 2013

The reflection on urban voids represents an opportunity to regenerate and intervene in modern cities, as they offer flexibility and creativity and moreover a ‘psychological break’ against city’s density. Located in Ajuda’s University Area (Lisboa), STRUCTURAL VOID is intended to explore the void and its developing role in an architectural project, more specifically in student housing in an almost excluded part of the city. This project proposes an exploration of residual space yet keeping its ‘empty’ condition and its multiple interpretations, creating public space which works as a support-base for the gathering of three different realities: History, neighbourhoods and Campus. “Beyond de edge of the world there’s a space where emptiness and substance neatly overlap, where past and future form a continuous, endless loop. And hovering about there are signs no one has ever read, chords no one has ever heard.” (Haruki Murakami)

ENCONTR’Ó FADO - Arquitecturas para o Encontro

PLADUR © Iberic Competition - XXIII Edition (with Rita Ramalho and Vanessa Almeida) Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade de Lisboa - April 2013 ENCONTR’Ó FADO (Adaptable Form to Occasional Dinamics) is a concept based on an idea of mutant and flexible spaces that adapt to the variety of uses and needs of this place. Being Coimbra an university town with a strong Fado tradition, this project aims at being a meeting point for student reunions and other academic events like concerts and Student’s Associations’ speeches. A strong relation with Largo da Portagem’s plaza was vital to achieve these goals and also to connect the building with the city. The building allows two ‘stage-platforms’ for exterior programs like the ones enounced above, and forms a natural anphitheatre situation with the street.

The ground floor is the heart of the project, containing the social canteen and the internal and external terraces that work as an extension of the street

ESAC - Espacio Activo Cerro

8th Semester project (with Daniela Fernández) - Taller Scheps A03 Faculdade de Arquitectura de la Universidad de La República, Montevideo, Uruguay

- July 2012

Located in Montevideo’s surroundings, ESAC is a space for multiple and simultaneous activities, a place for leisure, culture and sports, of interaction and conection to its landscape, city, neighbourhood and people who become the central theme of reflection, debate and critic. This project results from the intention of creating a meeting point for the neighbourghood as well as the city. Reactivating this area, ESAC positions itself as a satelite for multiple activities. Formally, it originates two areas of public space: one that connects more with the water and another which works as an extension of the forest. The volumes adapt to local topography, allowing both observatoy points and a sense of walking along side with the buildings. Materiality matches intensity of use, distinguishing two lighter volumes from a rougher one which supports programmatically the other two.

The light appearance of the volumes is achieved using a white translucid policarbonate skin that envolvs them. This allows that the two red suspended volumes - auditorium and workshops - stand out and call atention from outside.

A sistem of ramps serves both as access to all levels and as a path to walk through the building. Ramps and suspended volumes are also structurally complementary.

Puerto Impulso - Sumersión de la Ciudad

7th Semester project (with Maud Laronze) - Taller Danza A04 Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de La Republica, Montevideo, Uruguay

- December 2011

This urban plan is a project for Rosario, the largest city in the province of Santa Fé, Argentina. Being the third most populous city in the country it became popular and well known for its port, a major goods-shipping centre in the country, located on the right-hand shore of the Paraná river. Taking advantage of its international popularity, the intentions to transform this into a more dinamic city were made through the exploring its port. By re-exploring the connection with the water and the city’s formal limits we aimed at a conceptual ‘submersion’ of the city, meaning a total blend between this strategic fluvial entry and the city, which is nowadays a forgotten gap. To achieve these goals we created several different ambiences that could reach to all ages and populations: a stadium and other areas dedicated to sports, as well as jogging paths and car-free streets; housing and residences for average families, elder people and students; a natural anfitheatre and a leisure green park; a shopping centre and a new river terminal and a cultural centre that complements and integrates Oscar Niemeyer’s project ‘Puerto de la Musica’.

Emergency Housing - 30m2 prototype

5th Semester project - Urban System Faculdade de Arquitectura de Lisboa, Portugal

- January 2011

The idea of Urban Systems was the main topic of study, in which the relationship between ‘hystorical city’ and new arquitecture were object of reflection. This project consists in the reoccupation of a yard in Ajuda (Torre do Galo’s yard) ands its transformation of domain from public to partially private through the creation of emergency housing. To compose this emergency housing a variety of aggregation and repetition of the prototypes were made in order to form the idea of neighbourhood and therefore a system that generates arquitecture. The developing of a 30m2 unit that could accomodate up to six people took into consideration people’s living habits and how to assure flexibility and adaptability to such a small are. Light entrance, sun protection and transitions between public, semi-public and private space were also part of this reurbanization.
