MILTON HERSHEY

B.O.A Mr. Ezenekwe, MBA

Who doesn’t like a good s’more by the campfire, or a good batch of chocolate chip cookies with a glass of milk after a long hard day? We all enjoy a bit of deliciousness when we are feeling some kind of way. I am guilty of eating a chocolate bar or two in the middle of the day when I want a snack, or a glass of chocolate milk when I hang out with my kids after school. These yummy recipes would not be possible without the existence of one man. That man’s name was Milton Snavely Hershey. Milton Hershey was born on September 13, 1857. He was known for his kind spirit and his desire to make people happy. Milton’s happiness started with simple ingredients and sharing smiles by sharing HERSHEYS Chocolates. 100 years ago, only the wealthy were able to enjoy chocolates, but Milton changed the game for all of us. He founded the Hershey Chocolate company in February 9, 1894 and made the chocolates affordable. Milton did not just make chocolate affordable, he created job opportunities for many families and built a town for his employees to live in. I believe that Milton Hershey changed the world in many ways. Milton and his wife Catherine Hershey founded and funded “Hershey Industrial School”. The school was originally established for impoverished, healthy male orphans, while today it serves students of all backgrounds, even girls. Milton did not have children of his own, but with this school he made sure that the children who attended did not suffer the same hardships he did as a child. Milton used 3 guiding principles to ensure the students had a good education, a sense of stability and security: every graduate should have a vocation, every student should learn love of God and man, and every student should benefit from wholesome responsibility. Milton took it upon himself to help the orphan boys back in his time. That inspired others today to help kids better themselves with not only studies and class work, but everyday chores and responsibilities. The school currently serves more than 2,000 students. It is the largest residential education program in the US. When the HERSHEYS Chocolates company was made, it created job opportunities for many people. Milton wanted his workers to live happy lives. He believed that if his employees were happy, they would do great work in his company. So he created a town (Now known as the city of Hershey or Hershey City) for his employees to live in so they can prosper not only in their work life, but in their personal life too. The town was equipped with trolley systems, houses, schools and even a zoo. Today, the HERSHEYS Company employs approximately 21,000 employees. It is the largest manufacturer of chocolates in North America. Milton Hershey’s first love was caramel. He became interested in chocolate after the 1893 World’s Fair. In 1894 the company introduced HERSHEYS Cocoa. That was the very first HERSHEYS product available to the public and that’s when the HERSHEYS brand was born. One of the most known HERSHEYS chocolates was the HERSHEYS “Kisses” Milk chocolates. When the “Kisses” were originally introduced, they were wrapped by hand in foil! The HERSHEYS Company now makes more than just chocolates. They make candies, mint, gum and even syrup. The Hershey’s chocolates are even used in common recipes like cakes, cookies, other desserts and even Mole (A traditional sauce originally used in Mexican cuisine). The HERSHEYS Company is the leading manufacturer company in the United States. With annual Net Sales of over 7 billion U.S dollars worldwide.

The U.S Army also had a piece of the HERSHEY bar action in World War 2. They wanted a chocolate bar that could withstand the combat conditions, but taste better than a baked potato. HERSHEYS created the “Ration D Bar”. The bar weighed about 1-2 ounces and resisted temperatures higher than 90 degrees. The bar was not as delicious as the other HERSHEYS chocolate bars because the Army did not want the troops to develop cravings for them. After a year or two, the Army was impressed enough with the durability and success of the “Ration D Bar” that they requested that Milton Hershey make a Tropical Chocolate Bar. The only difference between the “Ration D Bar” and the “Tropical Bar” is that the “Tropical Bar” was made to taste better. The Tropical Bar even made it to the moon. The bar was given to the astronauts in the Apollo 15 mission. Milton Hershey founded the Hershey Park in 1906. A large crowd waited for the park to open. They enjoyed the all-day amusements. The amusements included a baseball game, music performances and other events. The park was made for the HERSHEY Company employees. The park opened its first roller coaster “The wild Cat” in 1923. In the 1970’s the park began a redevelopment plan, which led to new rides and the expansion of the park. The park rapidly expanded in the mid 1980’s. The park is still running today. There are currently 70 rides in operation. The park gets around 3,301,000 visitors a year. We all have or know of someone that has a sweet tooth. We also enjoy a little excitement with roller coasters or entertainment. Milton Hershey is part of our cravings and thrills. If Milton Hershey were to be alive today, he would have created more of his wonderful ideas. I believe that if the CEOs of various companies would think the way Milton Hershey did in the work place, they would have more success in their business. The employees would be happy and work with enthusiasm. The candy companies also need to think like Milton Hershey. He created a product that not only satisfies our craving, but makes us smile. Milton Hershey was a successful business man with a kind and loving heart. His success was possible because of his ideas and the people that supported his ideas. He gave the people what they needed and the people gave him back what he wanted.
