AQUA ZUMBA Ages 13-Adult

PRENATAL AQUACIZE

This is the aqua fitness program everyone has been waiting for! The “Pool Party” workout for all ages. Dive into our new water dance fitness class & experience a challenging water-based workout that integrates Zumba with water exercises.

For a safe, low-impact exercise program you can follow all nine months of pregnancy, enroll in the new prenatal Aquacize Program. Swimming, water jogging, and aqua aerobics are some of the best exercises to perform while pregnant. Our YMCA offers a class combining these activities into a low intensity program. The ability to swim is not required – many moves are performed in waist or chest-high water. Exercising in water is ideal for pregnant women because the water’s buoyancy requires you to support only 50 percent of your body weight, it reduces the risk of stress-related injuries, and the compression of the water is soothing on joints and muscles that are stressed by the added bulk of your preg-nancy. The water’s temperature also keeps you from overheating during your workout.

SENIOR AQUA EXERCISE Senior Aqua Exercise is a low impact, 40-minute class that focuses on enhancing movement, strengthening muscle, and increasing your range of motion. GIVING BACK AND PROVIDING SUPPORT TO OUR NEIGHBORS My tenure with the Meadowlands Area YMCA has been a rather lengthy one and I have many stories to share. However, this one tugs at my heart for many reasons. Almost 10 years ago, one of my students worked at the World Trade Certer every day for 28 years. She proudly states that she was a part of the cleaning crew in those magnificent buildings. As a Polish immigrant, she considered herself very lucky to have the many opportunities that America had offered her and her family. On Septemebr 11th of 2001 she experienced first-hand the loss of many co-workers and while she felt extremely blessed that she survived the day, she began to slip into a deep depression. Several years passed, always struggling with nightmares, a sense of hopelessness and the trial and error of medications with many side effects. On a bright, hot sunny day, she walked into my Summer Monday Stretch and Flex class. At first she was very reserved. She quickly introduced herself and claimed her spot in the back of the class. She commented after several classes how much she enjoyed the music and the workout class for the last 6 years; she is 71 years old and now talks to everyone in the class. Her smile is infectious. She repeatedly says how much she enjoys Monday mornings. She looks forward to exercising and as she puts it “dancing” and “humming” to the tunes. The road after 9/11 has been very difficult but through her great faith and her will to live life, she has managed to cope and continue her recovery. One of the reasons that she says she keeps coming back is that I truly care about her. She loves it when I call her at home when she doesn’t show up for two consecutive classes. I can hear the excitement on the phone and in her heavy Polish accent – she yells out to her husband “it’s my aerobic teacher”, you see, they miss me! I know that in some small way the YMCA’s program has played a part in her well-being and I am extremely grateful that I have the opportunity every Monday to make a difference. Nancy Sangiorgi, Associate Director and Stretch and Flex Instructor
