Together with my partner, we set out to develop & test a new typology for small, urban living in Christchurch. The main ideas that were examined are; the organisation of compact living spaces; social and physical sustainability; psychology of colour and materials impacts everyday living.

“Small but perfectly formed, this 100 square metre dwelling throws down the gauntlet for suburban multi-unit living. Without a landscape or a garden to engage with, the architects turned their attention indoors, creating spaces rich with geometry, drama and airiness that are further enhanced by the clever use of colour and architectural detailing. The builtin joinery, shelves and ledges represent a careful consideration of habitation at a smaller scale – and the winding stair, a highlight, pivots through the building past windows that are perfectly placed to capture views as you ascend.” - NZIA Awards Jury citation

“The material palette is pared right back, nearly to an industrial quality, but then the details are meticulous and the needs of the end-user have been so carefully considered... there the fine details too, like the poutama-patterned plywood and other incredible integrated artworks, and vibrant graphics, floor-coverings, soft furnishings and bespoke joinery that all aid the provision of flexible spaces that support flexible, interactive learning.’’

“The successful redevelopment of the Hagley Oval has provided a number of incredible opportunities to launch Canterbury and New Zealand further onto the world stage. The pavilion consists of an overhead tensioned canopy roof, a main pavilion level, and a lower level built into the grass embankment to house supporting spaces. This project, bringing together a huge number of dedicated parties, has further added to the rich historical overlay associated with this ground, and played a significant part in assisting the recovery of Christchurch.

The Hive, Collett’s Corner Multi-Use in:Flux Collective Lyttelton, Christchurch, New Zealand September 2018 Role: Concept design & community engagement workshops

20

maria chen portfolio 2019

Winning competition for Collett’s Corner. Collett’s Corner is a new, multi-use building to be constructed on Lyttelton’s main street. It is intentionally designed as a place to connect with friends and whānau in a space that is centered around wellbeing. A lively mix of hospitality, retail, apartments, all centered around facilities and treatment spaces for wellbeing providers. Collett’s Corner is set to become a vibrant hub for the people of Lyttelton and an exciting destination for all. Collett’s Corner’s collective design process and ownership structure is modeling a new way of doing things. Beyond local – it’s an example that has the potential to inspire change everywhere. Beyond today – it’s a building that will benefit our children and their children too.
