“Zoveel talen men kent, zoveel malen is men mens”, Carlos V “cuanto más lenguas conoces, más veces eres ser humano” « It takes ten years for a tree to grow up, but it takes a hundred for talents to be nurtured .»

Grazie tante! . Grazie a tutti José Sala Felis 2º NI

Another way to improve a language Amateur radio is defined as the self-training, intercommunication and technical investigations carried out by amateurs, that is, by properly licensed people who are interested in radio engineering, solely with a personal aim and without pecuniary profit. This definition is universally accepted by all nations and strongly accentuates the face of technical and educational activity. You must first obtain a license from the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism before you may legally send and receive messages by radio. This hobby can be done in many different ways. Radio amateurs use several modes of transmission to communicate. Voice transmissions are most common, although widely used is Morse code, also known as "CW" from "continuous wave". This way dates from the early days of radio. It is the wireless extension of wired telegraphy developed by Samuel Morse and the method of long-distance communication in real time dominant in 19th century. Though computer-based, digital, modes and methods replaced manual telegraphy, conven-

tional commercial and military applications, many hams enjoy using this mode, particularly in the shortwave bands due to its advantages of signal to noise ratio. Despite this aging process, telegraphy is still alive with radio amateurs, because it offers the possibility of communicating over great distances using inexpensive transmitting and receiving devices. Such devices are even simpler to build. The question is: what is so special about radiotelegraphy in the era of the Internet and global communications, as it takes us through long and arduous path of learning, which requires mental and practical training and makes us try harder to learn and use Morse code? Contests are another of the great activities of Amateur Radio. It boosts your technical knowledge and improves your radio operating skills. In a contest, each contact will score a certain number of points. The number of points scored for a contact may depend on the location of the station contacted. The winner is the station which gets the most points. Moreover, other more exotic technique is the use of the moon to reflect their radio signals back to distant places on the earth "Moon bounce" as it is called, is just another one fascinating aspect of ham radio.

Most of us started listening to radio Broadcasts on shortwave, fascinated by those distant sounds. This activity can be done by anyone, even with the aim of improving a particular language. Everyone has a small shortwave radio with SW and LW. At night, when conditions allow propagation, we can listen to commercial stations in many languages. This can be very helpful exercise for our listening. Let give yourself a chance one of these nights, take out from the drawer this AM receiver, and try to tune any foreign Broadcast Station, it is so easy. In summary we can say that ham radio is a hobby which you can enjoy in many ways, continuously learning on technical subjects, improving language skills or even Morse code, participating in international contests without leaving your home, or even doing the simplest thing: listening others anywhere in the world.

5

Land.

MOBILE

We think the mobile phone is the best invention of all because it means a revolution in the communication among people. First of all, it’s very useful to help us in our work because you can connect with all your customers and colleagues. In addition, the mobile phone can to be our office. Also, the most important thing is we’re always on-line, so we keep in touch with our family and friends thanks to different applications of the modern smartphones. For example, you can share the photos of your last party on Facebook and Instagram and all the people will see them. In our opinion, the best advantage of the mobile phones is the worst disadvantage because we don’t have any privacy in our life.

WORLD’S TALLEST MAN

THE BRAIN. What is the brain? Obvious answers might be "what you think with" or "where the mind happens". Physically, the brain is 1300 grams almost entirely made up of fat and water. Incredibly, that uninspiring mix forms the most complex syistem in the known universe. The cerebral cortex is made up of 15 billion neurons, each of which connects to approximately 50000 others. That's some 750000 billion connections. These connections can be fired up to 200 times a second and the more they are fired, the stronger they become. So the brain develops as it is used so as to be more efficient at whatever it is used for. The cortex has an area of around 40 cm2. Since that is bigger than the inside of the skull, the cortex has to fold up creating the characteristic surface of the human brain. The cortex does all the higher thinking, while the brain-stem takes charge of basic body functions: breathing, eating, sleeping and procreating. This means that the boring but necessary functions (i.e. breathing and sleeping) happen without us consciously having to worry about them. The divided brain. The really cool thing about the cortex is that it is divided into two relatively independent asymmetric hemispheres that think in different ways. The left hemisphere focuses on our specific needs, while the right hemisphere is more interested on what is happening outside ourselves. The left hemisphere focuses attention, the right hemisphere is holistic, it sees the bigger picture, putting us in touch with the world. The left hemisphere predicts and expects: it lives in a world of models, categoreies and patterns. By contrast, the right hemisphere is more concerned about what is unique and individual about people, things and ideas. As a result, the right hemisphere is good at recognizing individuals' faces, the left hemisphere tends to categorize people. The right hemisphere is on the lookout for what is new; it is therefore more flexible in its thinking. It is the Devil's advocate actively seeking out discrepancies to the left hemisphere's rules. Humour tends to be based on anomalies, so the right hemisphere tends to process what is funny. The left hemisphere reads emotions in the lower half of the face (i.e. around the mouth), the right hemisphere reads emotions around the eyes. None of this means that either hemisphere is better. Our intelligence is based on the combination of the two systems, grasping the insights of both logic and intuition. The division of the cortex in two is probably why we tend to see two sides to any argument, why we contrast self and community, abstraction and the concrete, the general and the particular, the part and the whole. Don't you think our human brain is a mistery? VERÓNICA DÍAZ.

Robert Pershing Wadlow (February 22, 1918 – July 15, 1940) was the tallest man ever recorded. At the time of his death his height was 2.72 meters and one year before passing away his weight was 223 kilograms. His abnormal growth was due to hyperplasia of his pituitary gland, which caused an extremely high level of human growth hormone in his blood. He was known as the “Alton giant” or “the giant of Illinois” due to the fact that he was born and grew up in Alton (Illinois, USA). Robert was the oldest of five children. When he was born he was a baby of normal size but he quickly began to grow. At the age of four he was 1.63 m. tall and at the age of eight he reached 1.88 m. When he was thirteen he became the world´s tallest Boy Scout with a height of 2.24 m. During the elementary school they had to make a special desk for him because of his size. He required leg braces to walk and had little feeling in his legs and feet, but he never used a wheelchair. Wadlow was a celebrity. In 1936 he toured with the Ringling Brothers Circus. He took part in other tours and he made many public appearances in later years. At the age of twenty Wadlow signed a contract with the International Shoe Company and received free shoes in exchange for his work promoting its products. On July 4, 1940, during an appearance in a festival in Michigan a faulty brace caused a blister in his ankle. That blister became infected and even though the doctors treated him with a blood transfusion, antibiotics and emergency surgery his condition worsened and he died 11 days later. He was only twenty-two. It is said that 40,000 people attended his funeral. Robert was devoted a life sized statue in his hometown. Sergio Álvarez / 2ºB Nivel Avanzado.

MEMORIES OF AN AUSTRALIA CHILDHOOD After Civil War, Spain was in chaos, people suffering poverty, hunger and there was no work so many people were forced to emigrate, one of them was my father. He decided to go to Australia when he knew that Commonwealth Government paid the fare to get there. In return he had to stay in Australia for at least one year and work in whatever jobs they gave them. A year later, my mother travelled to Sydney with him after they got married by proxy and 10 months later I was born As my parents both were working I was in a nursery, a public nursery. My mum told me that I went there happily because my teacher was very sweet and as I was a chatty girl I made friend easily. My first memory is my mum leaving me in the playground because I liked to play with others kids on the toboggan and the swings. We lived in Darlinghurst an inner city, eastern suburb of Sydney, in a house with other Spanish people We lived on the ground floor with a golden paddy field . When I was 3 years I used to go to the playground after coming back from nursery, and played with my Spanish little friends with different games and toys. On Saturdays , while my mum was working ,I used to go with my daddy for a walk to Hide Park, it is a public garden where people do sport activities. Sometimes we took the bus to go back home and if someone asked something to my father something I used to be one whom answer it because I knew my daddy could not speak English properly. Back there I was bilingual. My parents only speak Spanish but in the nursery I spoke English, so I could understood and spoke English (as a child) and understood Spanish without any problem. On Sunday, we always went to the beach, the most famous beach in Sydney, called Bondi Beach, my parents told me that I loved the beach since I was a baby, jump the waves, jumped off sand dunes, made sand castles and angels, etc. For me go to the beach is essential , Like Australians I am a beach lover. BONDI BEACH In July 1971 my parents decided to go back to Spain, it took us 26 hours to arrive in Madrid, Barajas Airport. When we were waiting for our flight to Asturias I asked for something to eat and an old woman who ear me speaking English started to talk to me because she felt frustrated, there were not many people that spoke English at that time in Spain. This is the story of my first four years of live. MONTSE FEITO

HALLOWEEN STORIES

The Party

The demon It was a normal day at the School of Languages. I was in classroom listening to the teacher. Then the teacher draw the curtains and played a video by Michael Jackson. Then, the teacher touched me and her hand was very strange it was Red! Suddenly, I heard a girl shouting and I turned back... The teacher had horns, green eyes and a red face. It was a demon! The students started shouting and all of them ran towards the door but it was closed. Then, the cupboard opened and a mummy came out of it and all the students turned into demons. And I fainted. The Spirit Five high school students went to a small house in a far mountain where their friend died time ago. They went because one of them had his rake and they want to talk to his spirit in Halloween. The guys prepared everything: they switched off the lights, they sat around the table, drank their blood, flashed candles and held their hands placing the rake in the middle of them. When they asked to communicate with their friend, they felt a a strange smell, the windows crashed, and one of them began to talk like his dead friend... His ghost was inside him! He had to tell them about their deaths ... TO BE CONTINUED. 1º Intermediate Class A

On 31th October Peter was alone in his house and he was preparing a Halloween party for his friends. Near his house there is an old cemetery and after the party he wanted to go there and scare his friends. At 8 o’clock all his friend arrived and they started the party. Peter had put a lot of ghosts and bats in the roof and pumpkins on the floor. He had prepared one CD with a lot of music and everybody was dancing and having fun when, at 12 o´clock, they decided to go to the cemetery. When they arrived only Peter went inside, and suddenly he started to scream because he saw a big Vampire. Nobody believed him and they went home. Next morning all of them got up with a big snap in their neck. By José Ramón & Sara / Intermediate 1/ Class A

The nightmare It was a dark windy night. The full moon on the sky! A little girl was walking through the forest. She was looking for her mother. But her mother is dead. She died crossing the river. Suddenly, the girl heard a big noise. She stopped! Behind the trees, there were two shadows. Two black men were looking at the girl and she starting crying! The two men approached her and shouted: “this is your last day because we are going to eat you!!!!!!!!!” Now, the girl can see the men. One of them was very big, green and with two horns in his head and the other man was thin, with a white face and sharp long teeth. Then the girl got up. She was crying very hard. After that she turned on the light and she started to laugh, because all was been a nightmare! by Olaya & Xurde / Intermediate 1 / Class A

THE JOKE It was a Halloween dark night, the wind was blowing and there was a full moon. Three brothers were walking through the village. There were a lot of scary pumpkins in front of the houses and, suddenly, a vampire appeared near them. For this reason, they were frightened and ran to their house. There, they told their mother what had happened. She listened to them carefully and finally she laughed. The children didn’t understand anything but at that moment the door opened and the vampire came in. The vampire was their father! It had all been a joke. by Angeles & Idoia / Intermediate 1 / Class D

The Cat

Full Moon

In the dark night, a group the friends were in a far away house in the mountains. Susan carried her black cat. That night, there was a full moon and the wind was blowing. The house was very big and old and the windows were broken. While the friends were playing, the cat disappeared. They all looked for it. Then, suddenly, the beautiful cat turned into a sad, enormous cat with yellow eyes. Amazingly, there were ghosts and bats everywhere. Fortunately, they were singing and dancing. And they were very happy. by Paula & Cristina / Intermediate 1 / Class A

It was a night with a full moon. The wind was blowing in the forest near Doctor Frankenstein’s castle. The creature was walking in the darkness. Suddenly, a black cat cried terrified when it saw the monster advancing. The cat ran away to the nearest village. While it crossed the street, some people woke up and turned on the candles. At this moment an old man from his window, saw a great shadow in front of him. -It’s the monster!! – he screamed. by Adrian & Manuel / Intermediate 1 / Class: D

NOISY HOUSE Once upon time there was a boy who lived in an old town. His house was full of noises. One day he met a beautiful girl and they fell in love, but he had a dark secret. It was a rainy and windy night, the moonlight was shining in the sky and Michael and his girlfriend were walking in the forest because they wanted to be together and their parents didn’t allow them to. When they went back home, he went to the toilet. Then she heard a lot of noises and she rushed up the stairs. Then, she saw that her boyfriend wasn’t a man, he was a ghost!!! She started to cry and shouted and at this moment she discovered that her boyfriend’s house was a haunted house. by Alba, Tamara and Sheila / Intermediate 1 / Class: D

THE HOUSE Once upon a time, there was a house in the forest and nobody lived in it. A rainy day two people were walking on the mountains. It started raining and to shelter from the rain they decided to go into the old house in the forest. They had never been in the house, and they thought somebody lived there. They knocked on the door and nobody opened it so they saw a open window and they decided to go into the house. There, they saw a room with old furniture. They were very tired so they sat on two chairs in the middle of the room. After few minutes they got asleep. When they woke up, they weren’t in the same room and two people were looking at them. One was a witch and other a zombie. They said: What are you doing here? You are in our house. The humans were very frightened because they didn’t understand anything. by Roberto and Ramón / Intermediate 1 / Class A

THE VISIT Midnight 31st October. A group of friends were having some drinks in a pub. After some alcoholic drinks, they decided to enter the village cemetery. One of them, who was an undertaker had the keys. A bat flew over there and the wind was blowing very strong. There was a lot of noise. Suddenly, a skull fell down the stairs hitting the leg of a girl. ‘’OMG!!!’’ she exclaimed while she was leaving the place. The floor trembled, a black cat appeared and some tombs suddenly opened wide. There were a lot of screams but nobody couldn leave the cemetery. RIP †† By Andrés & Leticia / Intermediate 1 / Class F

THE EXPLORERS We had been travelling for two months through the African desert looking for the Lost Pyramid. A long time ago Sharon had met a old man who told her about some marvellous treasure. When she told Iriana and me the story we immediately started the search. The camels were exhausted, and we had no food nor water. Suddenly Iriana said, “look at that rock”. We walked towards the small rock and discovered a hole in the sand. In the cave we could hear some strange and terrifying sounds. I turned on the light torch and we saw lots of bones and skulls on the floor. We also saw a shadow running in front us and we ran behind it. That was the last time I could see Sharon and Iriana alive Today I remember her bloody bodies on the floor and that Mummy eating their brains. I though that nothing worse could happen but, I was wrong… The Mummy had plans for me. I am married to it! Did you enjoy it? So Frankenstein is laughing behind you The end… up to now By Iriana, Sharon and Alberto Intermediate 1/ Class D

Then suddenly, we were in a dark tunnel, and many bats were flying above us. then we shouted as we ran very fast because we wanted to go out of the tunnel, but we couldn’t find the exit. Instead of this, we hid in a hole. However we saw a vampire very, very big, who wanted to suck our blood. One of us, was wearing a crucifix, and showed it to him. But… where was Fufu?? Fufu was a zombie, too!!!! Now she was terrified and started to scream very loud. When she was screaming, a zombie caught her leg and she fell to the floor, she stopped to shout because she knew that she was going to die and that’s what happened, all the zombies were around her and started to eat her. While she was dying, she saw Frankenstein again looking at her, that was the last thing she saw.

Ricordi a scuola…

“. Chus Lamadrid / 2º Intermedio A

Il mio primo giorno di scuola

A DIFFERENT NEW YEAR’S EVE

It happened many years ago, on a cold night in December. It was New Year’s Eve and my cousin Montse decided to give a party that night, because her parents were away on a cruise. My brother and I arrived at nine o’clock. My cousin lived on a 7th floor in the city centre of Gijon. I was very excited because I didn´t use to go out. All was ready for an unforgettable night. At eleven o’clock Montse told me that we needed more ice and I went to a nearby restaurant to buy it. When I was going up in the lift with the ice, suddenly I heard a strange noise, the lights went out and the lift stopped. At this moment I felt afraid. When the lights went back on, I pressed the alarm button, there wasn´t anybody there. Later I knocked and screamed again and again but nobody answered me. Sometimes I heard some music far-off: We wish you a Merry Christmas! We wish you a Merry Christmas! We wish you a Merry Christmas! AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!Finally at half past five a wonderful fireman opened the door. I was free, but I will never forget that night.

To YOU To be told that I should forget Does not help me, To be told That I should erase his photo, Does not help me, To be told I should move on Does not help me. Because I neither want nor I can. I have a punch below the ribs Inside my mind My places My recollections Along the seaside villa. I change place s To help myself to forget him, Because my recollections, My dreams Our conversations For a year and a half I have not invented them They have happened And have got into my mind. Our trips on the bus Are mine they are in my memory They belong to me Though they aren’t here now They have already gone away. I do not want to say That I miss you Because it sounds empty Because it sounds hollow It is much more I have dreamed about you Have thought about you, have felt you Whenever I saw you Everytime I saw you My heart jumped. I tried to hide it it tried to conceal it But with the time it has become Stronger, bigger. Although the sorrow Of not seeing Of not feeling Of not smelling Your wonderful perfume Is diluted by the time I have not imagined it It has happened It has come But it is not here now It has already gone away And I am here With my travelling dreams On my coming back home

Chinese at the school This year, at EOIO, we have had the chance to study Chinese, a new and unknown language for us. Have you ever done anything like this?. From October to March we have learned a lot of things like pronunciations, greetings, numbers and days of the week. We have studied Chinese songs and also seen videos of these songs, tongue-twisters and thirty-six Chinese words. Of this 36 chinese words, we have learned their meaning, symbol, and pronunciation, called PIN YIN. We have studied vocabulary, practical conversations and family relations. We have written a composition, done some spellings, learned some sentences and expressions

with questions and answers. Furthermore, we have studied five units of the book!!!. I am fairly sure, that you will agree with me when I say that the class has covered lots of aspects and we’ve been given a lot of material. In addition, we have received five cultural classes , and these are the classes that have revealed how fantastic, versatile and witty teacher, Song Lao Shí is. For instance, we have cut papers into several figures like the flower of the snow and papers that Chinese people put as a symbol of prosperity. On the 31 st of January, we have celebrated

our great Spring Party watched a video about every preparation of that important moment. We even went to class dressed in red clothes as the tradition says. Finally, to celebrate the new year, we made papers with prayers to put above and on both sides of the doors. The other cultural classes consisted of making colour dragonflies with thin ropes and the Chinese zociac. We learned the personality of each zodiac symbol. We also learned different places of China and have seen beautiful and fabulous photos. There are a number of reasons why I would recommend Chinese classes to you. Speaking for myself I am discovering a new culture and at the same time I feel more conscious about that enormous country and their charismatic people. Every day you go to class, you earn a stamp, in the end of the trimester the teacher will count the number of stamps you have and she will give you a price, for instance, a PANDA BEAR KEYCHAIN; so you can “purchase” a lot of beautiful presents only with your attendance to class. It just couldn’t have been better. Lupe Noriega. 2ºNA F

A wink to China As soon as we started to study Chinese this year, we firstly discovered the difficulty of learning a language whose grammar, culture and script are highly different from the Occidental ones. The first issue we had to deal with was in the phonetic field due to the four tones that define this language, which seems melodious to everybody who hears it, and as it has been discovered during the lessons, it appears to be the reason why they enjoy singing at every chance that comes up. Moreover they do it quite well, or at least the Chinese teacher does. Another important point is the writing which is not alphabetic, it is logo-graphic. First and foremost when learning the script the first step is to write and read the “pin-yin” which is the international phonetic system that helps to acquire their pronunciation. The characters are incredibly hard to learn owing to the succession of the strokes and the huge amount that exist. The differences among both cultures are so large that could not be mentioned in this article. It goes without saying that comparing western with Eastern cultures is like comparing black and white. We are like the night and the day. Even though we have had a tough time learning Chinese it is worth the effort in view of a new culture in an emerging country. Manuel & Miriam

A Oviedo. O-vie-do. O-VIE-DO. En Asturias. AS-TU-RIAS.

In "War Horse" the characters were recruited from their own countries, and this gives credibility to the film. The lead actor, Jeremy Irvine, seems to follow the way of the main characters: Peter Mullan, David Thewlis which suffers certain features of softness and some weaknesses. Unlike Emily Watson, that acts as the mother, who is one of the limited characters that shows a harsh charisma in moments of difficulty.

NO OLVIDA QUIEN FINGE OLVIDO…

Review of the film “War horse” “War horse” is a drama directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 2011. The action takes place during the First World War, and the film is about a fascinating story between a young English boy and his horse. The main character is “Albert” an English boy who lives with his family in a farm of Devon (England). One day, Albert´s father buys a horse socalled “Joey”, which will become the best Albert´s friend. Since Albert´s family is poor, his father has to sell Joey to the British cavalry as the First World War begins. Then, Joey is captured by German soldiers in France. Later, Joey is found by a young French girl who lives in a farm with her grandfather. Next, Joey will be re-captured by French soldiers. Meanwhile, Albert runs away to join the army and is sent to fight in the Second Battle

of the Somme. At the same time, Joey is left on his own in no-man´s-land, where is taken by another British soldier. Finally, the armistice brings the end of the war, and Albert recovers his horse at an auction. The film is a highly entertaining story about the relationship between a young British boy and his horse during the First World War. Furthermore, the cast is excellent, full of brilliant actors such as Emily Watson and Peter Mullan. Overall, I have found this film highly enjoyable. Although it is a little sad in parts, it is a thrilling story that will haunt you long after it is over. In my opinion, this film is a must for history lovers. Javier Moran 2º NA

una storia semplice di Leonardo Sciascia

Recensione:

THE ENGLISH SUMMER (by Carmen Riera): Laura had lost the last opportunity to promote in her job, an estate agency in Barcelona. Unfortunately, her English level was very low and she decided to do something definitive. She had been looking for an English course on the Internet and finally, she found an interesting method of study where she could practise English a lot. This course was made up of 24 hours with a native English teacher at her home, a beautiful cottage far from London without distractions, named “Four roses”. Laura had sent a lot of information about her previously, but she knew absolutely nothing about her teacher, Mrs. Gros. However, from the beginning, she realised something was wrong. The teacher was a hideous woman, a very very strange being. They lived far away without other people near them. Theonlytransportwasanoldvanandhermobilephonedisappeared strangely when she had just arrived. Laura wanted to give up because of the eccentric situation but obviously, Mrs Gros didn’t allow her to leave and locked her up in her bedroom. Fortunately, she could get away when her kidnapper brought her breakfast in the early morning. In the end, she stole an abandoned bicycle and ran out of the awful(verybeautifulactually)cottagetothenearestpolicestation to sue her crazy teacher.

The cook, the thief , his wife and the lover Greenaway's most famous film: “The Cook, The Thief His Wife and Her Lover” is a dark and grim morality play about our insatiable appetite for cruelty and power. Peter Greenaway creates a false world peopled with character types who slowly become real enough to evoke pain and sadness. The film works like a sneak attack on an audience. The director turns this tale of a bullying criminal and his unfaithful wife into something profound and extremely rare: a work so intelligent and powerful that it evokes our best emotions and least civil impulses, so brilliant that it expands the boundaries of the film itself. Greenaway's film begins with a man stripped naked, forced to feed excrements, and it ends in cannibalism. Between, there lies a simple tale of adultery, jealousy and revenge. Wealthy Gambon visits the posh restaurant he has bought, humiliating his wife, chef and thugs with his nouveau riche vulgarity and violence. Understandably tired of him, his wife embarks on an affair (in the restroom, naturally) with another regular customer, the quiet, bookish Howard. It's the details, as in all Greenaway movies, that provide most interest: peculiar connections made between sex, eating, love

Laura realised at this moment!… She was going to practice all English she had learnt… ?In my personal opinion, this book is entertaining and easy to follow, but it is not an interesting novel because of no much happens. However, it is easy to understand and offers a satirical point of view from an English student. To sum up, this is not the best book I have come across, but is agoodwaytolearnvocabularyandpractiseyourEnglishskills. Elena Cañas García / Inglés: 1º- Nivel Avanzado and death. I recommend you to see the film, is at once funny and gruesome, and those who are not used to Greenaway's peculiar style might be even disgusted or shocked; however, one might mention Sacha Vierny's brilliant camera work, Jean-Paul Gaultier's vividly stylized costumes, and Michael Nyman's somber and exciting music, which will haunt the viewer long after the film's end. Unsuitable for popcorn Philomena is a British film based on a true story of an Irish woman who is searching for her son. This drama moves between current days and the early fifties. The main stars are Steve Coogan and Judi Dench (very well-known by her roles as "M" in James Bond Films or in "Queen Victoria") The story begins when Philomena decides to tell her family her big secret about her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became unmarried pregnant teenage and was forced to live in a convent. A political journalist who has been recently sacked picks up her story just trying to be in work and to get a new job. Together they begin a journey to find her lost son. This quest makes them become friends and it changes the point of view of the journalist that is more and more involved in her search. Getting to know the life in the convent of a young Philomena which is possible by means of continuous flash-backs, we get to know the achievements, friends, the life in general of the son she is looking for. In spite of being a dramatic story, the clever script sprinkled with a subtle British irony makes you smile more than cry. Nobody can fail to be moved by the tenderness and lack of rancour of this charming old woman. This film manages to attract you like a breath of fresh air without needing big special effects so typical in USA films. Miriam Salazar2º NAE

Philomena is a drama film with some moments of comedy, directed by Stephen Frears and starring by Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, is based on a real story that was first known due the book entitled The lost child of Philomena Lee by Martin Sixsmith. It tells the touching true story of Philomena Lee that during 50 long years never gave up the search of her son. The story begins in the Ireland of 1950s when the main character, a pregnant out of wedlock teenager, was sent to a convent to be looked after as what nuns called a fallen woman. The baby was called Anthony and when he was about three years old, without warning his mother, he was sold by the nuns and his adoptive parents took him away to America. The plot event of the movie is set in about 2003. Now in her late 60s, Philomena is haunted by the memory of letting her son leave her life, and she wonders what happened to him, and above all she can’t stop asking herself if he ever thinks of her, if he has a good life. Philomena story weaves with the one of Martin Sixsmith which is at the low ebb of his career as a journalist after a scandal as a former BBC Moscow correspondent. Depressed and restless has the opportunity of writing a human interest story when he bumps into the life of the protagonist, a woman forced to give up her baby 50 years earlier. Sixsmith and Philomena return to the convent 50 years later, where they are told the records of adoption were destroyed in a fire. The nuns have no news of Anthony's whereabouts. A chance conversation in the local pub tells Sixsmith that there is more to this story. They travel to America and found the tragic destination of Anthony. Philomena has to summon courage to go on. The film is a riveting an immensely moving story, because of the protagonist lacks of rancor and her capacity for forgiveness. It has some surprising twists, including one that not many reach to imagine. The film is a must see and it will haunt everybody, mainly those who would recognize themselves in the figure that Philomena portrays. The movie puts a human face on a dreadful practice which was widespread in some countries as Ireland or Spain. Associations of affected and campaigners estimate that thousands of children have been “stolen babies” as they are now being denominated.

MY FAVOURITE FILM: THE GOONIES PRODUCTION YEAR: 1985 COUNTRY: USA CERT: “PG” (Parental Guide Suggested) RUNTIME: 113 minutes CAST: Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Josh Brolin, Kerri Green, Martha Pimpton… and more on this film. The Goonies is an American adventure-comedy film, directed by Richard Donner together Steven Spielberg who wrote the story for a screenplay by Chris Columbus in 1985. The film is set in “Goon Docks” a neighborhood where a group of friends called themselves “The Goonies” spend the last weekend living there. A foreclosure on their families’ houses will be done from expanding Astoria Country Club and their houses will be a Golf Club. The story begins on a rainy Autumn evening. Mikey (the main protagonist), spends the time with his friends and his big brother at home. While they were gossiping in the attic, they find an old newspaper clipping a spanish map relating to a rumor of a lost pirate treasure, somewhere in the area, and an old gold dubloon, that leads them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune “One-Eyed Willie” a Legendary 17th century pirate. The Goonies decided to look for the treasure and perhaps if it is true, they will solve the economic problems for their families or.. live their last adventure together. The trip will bring them exciting adventures

unearth, run away from pirate traps, and the Fratelli Family, an Italian family of gangsters who want the treasure too. Although it is quite a predictable story or maybe a bit children’s film, the plot is absolutely entertaining and amusing. I really like it and enjoy a lot with all the adventures on it. Perhaps every boy and girl from the 80s has a “Goonie” still alive inside, and about it, “The Goonies” is considered one of the Classical Cult film from the 80s. Lucia de la Torre 2º NAE

STANLEY KUBRICK: A CINEMATOGRAPHIC ODYSSEY You can be a slave in the Roman Empire, you can be a violent teenager, you can be a mad in a Hotel, you can fall in love with a young lover, you can fly in the space discovering the Human Evolution, you can be part of the US Army fighting in the Vietnam War, or you can be part of the European High Society of 18th Century, even you can film Neil Armstrong walking on the Moon (conspiracy theories say that), and you can be many more things when you are watching a Kubrick’s film. Anyway, he touched with the hand of God all the genres of the 7th Art. But if we only have one word to describe his films, the word would be: Perfection. Perfection because he was a Director obsessed with the image, with the symmetry in all his frames and he wanted that his films were like pictures in movement with sound and music. He was born in New York, working as a Photographer in his beginnings ,but a few years later he filmed his first film(after two short-films): “Fear and Desire” in 1953.Two years later, he filmed his second film “Killer’s kiss”. After this moment, all the Kubrick’s films were big blockbusters (except Barry Lyndon). ”The killing”,”Spartacus”,”Lolita”,”Dr.Strangelove”, ”2001:A space Odyssey”, ”A Clockwork orange”, ”Barry Lyndon”, “The shining”, ”Full Metal Jacket “and” Eyes Wide Shut” One by one, all his

films have been an influence in each genre. Special mention to “2001: A space Odyssey”, in my opinion this film is the most representative of what Kubrick understood the 7th art was: perfect technique, perfect image and the fight of the man against his environment. Who don’t remember the scene of the spaceship while we listen to “The Blue Danube”? That’s great! It seems like if Strauss would have composed that waltz for Kubrick, and it’s the most beautiful film scene that I’ve ever seen. But in this small resume of the Kubrick’s figure, I have to mention one aspect very close to Kubrick, the mystery. If we remember, during the late sixties and the 70’s there was a space war between USA and URSS. The first country that will be able to land on the moon would be the winner. If we believe the conspiracy theories about this, Kubrick filmed the land on the moon in England, in a secret cinema studio. And years later, he will be murdered following the orders of the American Government because Kubrick was decided to tell the truth about this. Logically, the consequences would be dramatics for the USA. However, these theories haven’t got real evidences, but the doubt is always there. With a particular personality(like all the genius),being under his orders was very hard, he always was looking the perfect angle, the perfect moment, the perfect light, and he has given to the History, symphonies of images in movement. That’s what his films are. He was always investigating with lens, cameras, searching new cam objectives and new ways to get the perfect image; even he had one cam lens that was used by the NASA. 3 curiosities about Stanley Kubrick: -He was a great chess player, and sometimes he survived winning local chess tournaments. -He always wanted to film a movie about Napoleon; but due to economic reasons, he had to film Barry Lyndon. -In “The Shinning”, Shelley Duvall (the role of Wendy), finished the shooting with serious psychological problems due to Kubrick’s character. Of course, there have been other great film directors, maybe better than Stanley, but each time I watch one of his films, I realize that he was the man who transformed the cinema into the CINEMA. THANKS STANLEY (1928-1999)

12 years a slav When I heard that “12 years a slave” had won the Oscars to the best film in 2014, best actress and best adapted script, I asked for advice to a friend that had already watched it and he told me that it was really recommendable. After watching it, I should admit I am not disappointed at all. The plot of the film is based on real events. It is about a black free man (Solomon) that lives with his wife

and his two sons. He is really wise and one of his skills is that he plays the violin excellently therefore he is sometimes on tour throughout USA. One night after being playing in a club, he meets two men that supposedly are going to manage some concerts. When he wakes up the next morning, he finds out he is in a room fettered and he notices he has been drugged and kidnapped in order to be sold as a slave. Once he is moved to the south of USA, he is beaten to force him to hide his identity as a free man, and he is sold to the owner of a plantation (Ford). Thanks to his knowledge to design rafts, he builds one making a lot of profits in the transport of material and he gains the trust of Ford. But on the other hand, he gains the hatred of the supervisor (Tibeats) so he is continuously humiliated. As his life begins to be in danger, Ford decides to sell him to another plantation’s owner. Before being transferred to the new place, he told his master that he is, in fact, a free man but Ford replies him that he can do nothing to liberate him because he is in the red. When he arrives to the new plantation, he finds out that the new master (Epps) is a tyrant and a racist man. There he suffers from all kind of vexations and betrayals as all slaves of the location. After twelve years as a slave, he meets a Canadian carpenter (Bass) who is against slavery . Solomon gains his sympathy and persuades him to write a letter to his family in New York. Bass, risking his life, decides to do it and finally Solomon is liberated and moved to his family’s house. The great strength of this film is to observe how the values of the main character are changing little by little. At the beginning when Solomon is free, he is concerned about the welfare of his family, because we can see he has a well-off life and buys everything he wants.

Io non ho paura - Niccolò Ammaniti

When he becomes a slave, he does not understand why the rest of the slaves are so submissive and he tries to change the mentality of all the mates trying to make a group to help them. With time, , he becomes thoughtless about the problems of other slaves and in fact it seems that he has no feelings. He is only worried about himself and he is only thinking about how to reach freedom and see his family again.

Reyes Perez Hidalgo 1º NI italiano

Because of the cruelty of some images, in my point of view this film should be watched by people over 18 years. It is a thought-provoking film that touches your senses and in some parts of the film, you can feel depressed. When the film was over, It made me think about the conditions in which slaves lived two centuries ago and how we improved our welfare, because in spite of the fact that racism still exists, thanks to our Constitution and a lot of laws our standard of living has improved considerably. In addiction I am aware that nowadays our rights are being cut down and nobody is fighting against the powerful lobbies , so I think that the danger is to get used to the new situation and resign ourselves without doing anything against, as the film shows us. Besides, the film makes me think that freedom is the most important right our society should have, and I feel sad knowing that people in a lot of countries are not really free. Jorge García 2º NAF

Reiseerinnerungen nach Marokko

My trip to Rome: A visit to the Eternal City. When last May my wife and I were at the terminal 4 in Barajas Airport waiting for our flight to Rome I could not restrain the excitement, I could only think how lucky I was. There I was, on the point of boarding the plane, with my carry-on in one hand and a tourist guide in the other, willing to spend the time of my life, as happy as a cloud. The flight was quick

and quiet. We arrived at Fiumichino airport in less than two hours, a bus was waiting for us to go to Termini station in central Rome. It was Friday afternoon, a crowd of people filled the streets, the traffic was heavy. We left our luggage at the hotel and went out to try to eat our first Roman pizza. Immediately after lunch, we headed to the Coliseum. This monument was built more than two thousand years ago, it was used for public shows and gladiatorial combats. There was a huge queue to get in, but fortunately, we had purchased our tickets online. Nearby is the Roman Forum, that used to be the centre of Roman

life for ages, so we headed there to complete our first day trip to the past, walking and sightseeing the ruins of several ancient buildings. At the end of the day we were exhausted. We started the next day visiting the Trevi Fountain, one of the most beautiful fountains in the whole world. It is said that if you throw a coin into the fountain, you are certain to return to Rome. It is impossible to imagine the amount of people who was waiting to take a picture throwing the coin into the fountain! Then, we went to the famous Pantheon, a temple dedicated to all the gods of Ancient Rome, and to finish the day’s journey, we admired the wonderful architecture the Piazza Navona, one of the most important squares in Rome, where you can have a sandwich surrounded by street performers’ pictures. How could it be otherwise on a Roman Saturday evening? we lived a bit the Dolce Vita along the narrow streets of Trastevere. By the way, notice if you

It was extremely hot, so right away we continue our steps towards the Vatican Museums. Once again, we were glad to have got tickets in advance, although we still had to queue to see the Sistine Chapel. Monday had arrived, our last day, and we decided to go to Piazza di Spagna. To get there it is necessary to walk along one of the most important shopping streets in Rome, Via Condotti, where you can find glamorous boutiques, and waste all your money if you want. Carcasone Carcasone is the loveliest city I´ve ever visited. It is a French city. It´s in southern France and is the capital of the department of Aude in the region of Languedoc-Rosellon. If you decide to go to Carcasone you have to visit the old city,’ La Cité’. It is a medieval town, restored in the 19th century. Inside ‘La Cité’ you can see The Count Castle, San Nazarie´s Church, paved streets, little shops and a lot of amazing places. At night, you can see the amazing spectacle of the old city shi-

venirs. There are a lot of things: handbags, belts, spices, perfumes…. You can also taste Moroccan cuisine in one of the many restaurants. If you want to have very good fish you can go to the beach restaurants. The food is spiced and it is delicious. Then you can drink a lot of fruit juices in the central square called Uta-el-Hamman. In this square there is a Kasbah and a Palace with a little garden. Finally, the best things about Chouen are the friendly people and the air of serenity and mystery. I think it is a perfect holiday destination because it has a cheap standard of living: you can eat, sleep, shop and you don’t spend a lot of money. Mª José Fernández Suárez, 1ºNI

ning as a boat sailing across the sea. There are other things to visit in Carcasone. You can enjoy the festival of theatre in summer, taste the French cuisine, as good as Spanish cuisine but more expensive. Near Carcasone, you can find the “Canal du Midi”, the most ancient navigable channel in France. There you can hire a houseboat. Carcasone is an impressive city and I felt as a medieval knight walking along its streets. It is a recommendable experience. Juan Carlos Díaz Santero, 1ºNI-P

After spending two full weeks visiting amazing and really beautiful places along the roads of the west triangle in the USA (Los Ángeles, Las Vegas and San Francisco), at last, we arrived to the paradise, we were going to spend a few days in Kailua, a really beautiful and relaxing village about 18 miles from Honolulu. The perfect end to a special trip. Some months ago when we were preparing our trip we thought that it would be good to have some quiet days laying on the beach and taking long walks by the golden sand. But finally, we spent these days visiting incredible places where a lot of movies and series were filmed (From here to Eternity (1953), Jurassic Park (1993), Pearl Harbor (2001), Lost (2004/2010), Hawaii 5.0 (2010), etc…), beaches that we had only seen on postcards and tasting delicious local cuisine. We even took part in history by visiting Pearl Harbor, the historical place where II World War started for the USA. One of the first places that we visited was, Laniakea beach, located in Oahu North Shore. This is one of the most important beaches on the island for the turtle protection. You can swim very close to them and watch them while they are sleeping on the sand sunbathing. On this beach, turtles built nests for their eggs, and volunteers are in charge of protecting them from tourists, and answer questions about them, They are very sensitive to noise and human disturbance. Along the North Shore road, they take you to these delightful beaches where you can find nice drivers stopovers and have something to eat. Ted’s bakery is one of the best and most popular among local people and surfers. Their specialty are chicken, teriyaki beef, Kalua pork (Kalua is a tradicional Hawaiian cooking

method which literally means “to cook in an underground oven”), and the chocolate-hampia cream pie are Legendary. After a long day of sightseeing, the best thing to do in Kailua is going to Lanikai beach, grab a MAI-TAI, and enjoy one of the most famous sunsets in the world. Under no circumstances can leave Hawaii without tasting the genuine Mai-Tai, so good and popular too, in the clubs in Waikiki. Lanikai is also known for being a perfect place to practice water sport such as surf paddle, kayaking, snorkeling… Once that you have tasted the beautiful beaches you can’t miss visiting Pearl Harbor and soak up yourself in History. There, you will better understand how deeply Pearl Harbor attack wounded “The American Dream” pushing the USA into the II world war in 1941. A respectful visit to the US Arizona battle ship, sunk during the Japanese attack with most of it’s crew on board, should be a must once in Pearl Harbor. To finish your day after visiting the military base, you hace two very nice options to continue your day. Either expending the evening in the lively but a little bit crowed Waikiki beach and Honolulu downtown or heading for a hike and discover the Mánoa Falls, the exuberant rain forest surrounding the falls that will impress you. Despite the fact that Oahu is not a big island, as you can see, there are a lot of attractive plans to do and enjoy your own Hawaiian experience. Overall, friendly and hospitable people and really lovely places that make you long for the next visit to Hawaii . ALOHA!!!

MARAÑUELAS I would like to give you a typical recipe from Asturias. It`s very similar to biscuits and their name is “marañuelas”.They are delicious and very easy to make. The recipe needs 2 eggs,175 g of meted butter,250 g of sugar,8 g of baking powder,500 g of wheat flour and lemon zest. Weight all the ingredients ,later mix the flour

After ,you have to put te mix over the table making the shape of a volcano (with a hole in the middle). Add into the hole : two eggs, some butter, some sugar and some lemon zest and start kneading. Firstly mix the ingredients into the volcano hole and then add the flour little by little. When the dough is ready, make the same biscuits you can see in this picture and bake in the oven previously heated at about 180 degrees. I think you`ll like them!

Resultado excelente. The History and the récipe a sweet called ”Carbayon” The citizens of Oviedo are called ovetenses, although they are known as “carbayones” in memory of a tree that it has been a symbol of the city a long time. One carbayon is an oak in Asturias and in the past it was a sacred tree. Carbayon was situated at the bottom side in “San Francisco” park it was 30 m high and 9 m wide. Because of the growth of the city the Council Authorities had to cut down the ancient tree to enlarge the main street of the city. The tree was cut down in 1879 and it cost 192 pesetas the currency on those days, on the place where the carbayon was once there is commemorative plate since March 1949. On the plate we can read the following inscription “ the carbayon” was here for centuries as symbol of the city, it was cut down on 11 th October 1879. Council Authorities agreed on 23 rd March the 1959 this plate was set to keep its memory so

in Oviedo there is a typical sweet called “Carbayon”. I think it is very easy to make it. RECIPE CARBAYON Ingredients: - 400 g grounds almonds - 200 ml water - 200 g sugar - 3 eggs yolks - Lemon peel - 500 g of puff pastry - 20 g butter - 20 g flour COVERAGE - 200 g glassé sugar - 4 spoonfuls water

A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon. Four worms were placed into four separate jars. The first worm was put into a container of alcohol. The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke. The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup. The fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil. At the conclusion of the sermon the Minister reported the following results: The first worm in alcohol . . . Dead The second worm in cigarette smoke . . . Dead Third worm in chocolate syrup . . Dead. Fourth worm in good clean soil. . . ALIVE!!! So the Minister asked the congregation, "What did you learn from this demonstration?" Maxine was sitting in the back, quickly raised her hand and said . . . "As long as you drink, smoke and eat chocolate you won't have worms!" An atheist was walking through the woods. 'What majestic trees!' 'What powerful rivers!' 'What beautiful animals!' He said to himself. As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder & saw that the bear was closing in on him. He looked over his shoulder again, & the bear was even closer. He tripped & fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw & raising his right paw to strike him. At that instant moment, the Atheist cried out: 'Oh my God!' Time stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. 'You deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don't exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident.' 'Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?' The atheist looked directly into the light, and said: 'It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the BEAR a

Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, 'Now, class, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I would turn red in the face.' 'Yes,' the class said. And the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head & spoke: 'Lord bless this food, which I am about to receive from Thy bounty through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen!
