RESIDENTIAL EXTENSION

TYPE: Residential Extension SITE: Dublin, Ireland STATUS: Built YEAR: 2012 I was involved with this project with Ailtireacht Architects from Dublin from the design stage to construction. Throughout the project I was responsible for producing the set of drawings for planning, tender and details for construction. This typical early twentieth century terraced house in Ranelagh was defined by, its poor links to the garden, being overlooked and an isolated kitchendining space. The proposal intended to provide a legible contemporary sequence of spaces to the rear of the house centered around the retained galley courtyard and garden. This results in a series of fixed glazed screens, which are thermally broken by a series of insulated, pivoting and sliding panels, which flip and slide when opened, playfully inverting the space. What is solid becomes void and vice versa, creating two distinct spatial experiences of enclosure and permeability. The corner is opened to create a summer’s threshold to the garden, in an act beyond the quotidian, one’s line of sight extended to the garden beyond, marking the moment. The transition and steps from the main house, the kitchen and the rear insideoutside spaces are defined in a dark grey polished concrete and enclosed in a retaining privacy screen. A first floor brick sheath encloses the screens below, a first floor extension and bay window desk, along with the insertion of an en-suite and dressing room.

RURAL HOME

TYPE: New build residential SITE: Wicklow, Ireland STATUS: Planning Application YEAR: 2012 The brief for this project was to design a two storey house in a protected landscape in Lackandarragh, Co. Wicklow. I worked on this project from design to the planning stage carrying out extensive visualisation studys and site suitability reports as well as the drawings for the planning application, The design came from the need to ingratiate this home in to its landscape. The site is in an area which is listed in Ireland as and ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. This proposed many planning challenges for us at Ailtireacht. Set near the bottom of a scenic valley the proposal was required to be invisible from the road. Set in to a sloped terrain the natural screening of the land is maintained and augmented to conceal the house from view from the nearby roads. The site is overgrown with gorse which will be maintained as much as possible. A grass roof on the upper flat roof of the proposal further ingratiates the design into its surroundings. The geometry of the building folds with the existing contours of the land to nestle itself into its environment. The two storey house has three bedrooms on the ground floor while all the living spaces are accommodated on the upper storey to allow unobstructed views across the valley. The kitchen steps out to an external terrance allowing you to sit amongst the existing plant life while enjoying secluded views across a protected landscape.

RESIDENTIAL EXTENSION

TYPE: New build residential SITE: Wicklow, Ireland STATUS: Tender YEAR: 2012 I was involved in this project with Ailtireacht Architects from design to tender stage. The brief we received was to establish this protected structure as a modern family home by providing it with the required facilities of contemporary living such as a larger kitchen and informal living area, of a scale commensurate with a single occupancy family dwelling of its size along with additional utilitarian spaces. Using the rear split-level and raised ground floor of the main house the proposal creates a series of spaces, essential for the running of a family home of this size. All the while respecting the character, proportions and grandeur of the original structure and all its original decorative features. The proposal is designed to benefit from improved orientation and lighting conditions. While the main building enjoys an east west perspective the return to the rear of the property suffers from poor daylighting due to its north south orientation. This is rectified in the proposal with a rooflight bringing light down into the return by a light shaft penetrating all floors. A threshold of concrete piers announces the kitchen/living space extension which also serves to create an internal courtyard between the new extension and existing house. This court brings light through to the deep dining space beyond. An exposed concrete ceiling in the living area is offset by a timber floor surface which extends outside to the rear terrace. The terrace is partially covered by a concrete pergola that extends from the flat roof structure. The flat roof sits inside an exposed concrete ring beam which hangs off concrete beams spanning across the roof. Low maintenance lavender is grown, the soft nature of which will juxtapose with the hard concrete..

External Perspective

TYPE: Masters Thesis SITE: Dublin, Ireland YEAR: 2011 The main issue explored in this thesis was how to mediate between public and private in the city. On one hand a desire for quiet, privacy and sanctuary. On the other a need for integration and community. How to negotiate between these two polarities at the scale of the individual, is the question I repeatedly ask myself throughout this study by working with a brief for a mental health respite. The geometry of the building, works on a layering system intended to subtly filter the public areas down to the most private. The entrance opens on to a public square, opening a dialogue with the surrounding streets. Entering the building brings you into a central court from which all functions are offset. A river runs through the site creating a physical distinction between the public and the private spaces of the faciltiy. Crossing the river by bridge brings you in to the private living quarters of the inhabitants. Their private rooms offer a dual aspect which face to the north back on out over the river via private balcony and seat with a view out over the inner semi public courtyard of the complex. Their rooms also face to south with views out over a private garden to the rear which offers complete quiet and seclusion.

TYPE: Final Year Project SITE: Dublin, Ireland YEAR: 2010 The brief for the first semester project in my final year was to design a contemporary extension to Dublin’s Civic Assembly House originally built in 1728, so that the building could function anew as a civil registry office where wedding ceremonies are performed. The large octagonal room was originally built as an exhibition space with a georgian house built at the front to accommodate administrative purposes. The intention of my proposal was to centralise and activate the great octagon room as a civic room in the city. A path is created to direct you from the street under the concrete soffit of the extension down a side stepped alley brining you into the building while also allowing glimpses of the central octagonal room beyond. You are then lead through the huge central civic room to a stairway beyond which disappears momentarily into the old assembly house and re-emerges into the octagon via balcony at first floor level. A concrete cantilevered stairway which hangs off the existing old brick walls wraps around the octagonal form before delivering you to the main wedding chamber on the second floor. This room reads as a legible contemporary extension to the historic rooms of the exisitng house. The octagonal room becomes a central civic from which all three wedding chambers are offset. Currently my project is on exhibition in the Civic Assembly House which today has been reappropirated as the headquaters of the Irish Georgian society while they await funding for an extension.

CREMATORIUM

TYPE: University Project SITE: Carlow, Ireland YEAR: 2010 My proposal for St. Mullins was to extend the existing graveyard which currently stands as a significant part of the culture and history of the area. What struck me most on arrival at St. Mullins was the inherent peacefulness and spirituality of the landscape. This was partly due to the experience of the section through the land that cuts across the existing graveyard, rises through the surviving motte andthen falls dramatically down to the river barrow. It is along this section, which I see as the key to the experience of St. Mullins, that I proposed to extend the graveyard. Looking at the graveyard as a building type I felt I could push my brief further to include an exploration of the crematorium as a building with a viable yet spiritual function and to also explore the role of commemoration and memorial in the landscape. Three main elements make up my design. I have established a route, acting as a processional route for a funeral which links to a commemorative route for contemplation that also links back to the existing graveyard. The second element is the building itself which reinforces these routes that I have established by becoming a part of them. The last element is the subtle shaping of the sloping landscape formed via a cut and fill method of forming grass banks to house traditional burials that can be formed over time as needed and maintain the existing integrity of the section.

TYPE: University Project SITE: Finland YEAR: 2009 The main motive behind my design for this brief was to preserve the pedestrian route running through the site, connecting the inner city area with the suburbs. The intention was to then build around that connection thereby drawing people in to the site and creating a hub of life and activity. These two ideas lead to a natural progression in the form the building took:: a simple ‘L’ shape plan on site extending out towards Kuusilouto waters while at the same time creating a courtyard space on the inside of the ‘L’ which is then enclosed by a sloping triangular roof rising from the ground and completing the space. This configuration allows for an active visual connection between pedestrians passing through the site and the activity of the building below. Activity through connection is the main concept behind this design. Through the preservation of the physical connection between city and suburb and through the creation of visual connections between outside and inside and between the different areas within the building itself, life and activity will be sparked. external walls are constructed of layered stone slab sympathetic to the buildings settings.

URBAN PLANNING

TYPE: Urban Design/Masterplanning SITE: Kaijonharu, Finland YEAR: 2008 The brief for this urban design project was to revitalise the area of Kaijonharu in Oulu, Finland as the site had become under utilized and degraded. Located beside the university campus and in between two large lakes my concept was to reactivate the space by connecting with the existing facilities and infastructure. After analysing the site I was able to design a program for the area of new commericial, residential and and public services requirements. The buildings are strategically designed to interact with one another creating outdoor paths, public gardens and squares. The result is a series of dynamic, connected spaces with access to all the facilities of the area.
