Our response is to introduce a unifying set of functions that will allow a better experience of the heritage structure. By re-aligned the programmes so that they are complimentary with each other, they are able to share amenities and potential customers. We also emphasized the building’s history as an Athenaeum and take advantage of its location on the Octagon so the building will now contribute at a civic level. A generous circulation spine is consolidated down the main axis of the building, making it easy to navigate. This spine links down to the basement level via a central internal stairway at the rear of the building and the existing stair at the front. All internal existing vertical circulation have been re-used. The advantage of a simplified circulation route creates seamless connections between programmes generating a positive heritage experience. The spine consolidates amenities such as bathrooms, but in doing so allows the public facilities to share patrons benefiting both parties.
