THE STRANDINGS OF THE -CLAUDINE’ AND ‘WESTMINSTER’ AT MARGATE. BY MICK TWYMAN

The accompanying engraving is well-known to those of us with an interest in maritime history. We tend to take it for granted that the story behind it is equally well-known, but a feature in a ,local paper a few years ago made it plain that was not the case, so here is the tale of what actually happened to them. The ‘CLAUDINE’ and ;WESTMINSTER’ were East Indiamen on the final leg of the long voyage home from the East Indies in convoy with another vessel of the company when disaster struck, causing them to be struck ashore at Palmer Bay( now Palm Bay) in the badly damaged conciliation as depicted. Having braved the worst weather that the oceans could throw at them, they were now in charge of pilots as they made their way up the Channel into the waters of the Thames Estuary. The date was the 22nd of November, 1840 and the weather was foul when the convoy was caught in a ferocious northerly gale which sprang up off Margate. Fighting against the high seas the two ships were driven ever closer to the coat and potential disaster. The pilots, knowing the coast well, decided that the best chance to save the ships and their valuable cargoes was to run them ashore at the spot which presented the best chance of survival, and soon the vessels, with enormous waves sweeping over their decks, were pounding through the surf over the rocks to ground safety. It will be seen that their journey to the shore had been a fraught one and both vessels had been dismasted by the fury of the storm, but thanks to the determination and bravery of the boatmen of Margate not a single life was lost. The crew of ‘ WESTMINSTER’, with her rich cargo of cotton, indigo, rice, silks and wine, was saved by the Margate Customs House boat, whilst the Margate lugger; CITY QUEEN’ skippered by William Hubbard, rescued that of the tea laden ‘CLAUDINE’. The third vessel, laden with a very valuable cargo of hardwoods and with her crew taken off by a lugger, was driven broadside onto the rocks at Kingsgate Bay. There had long been a loud clamour and agitation for a harbour of refuge this side of the North Foreland, as a great many vessels had been lost due to heavy weather in the Estuary due to a lack of such facility. Many sites had been looked at by the Admiralty and plans had actually been drawn up for a massive harbour to be built at Palmer Bay, the very spot where the two East Indiamen lay in their sorry state, but nothing else ever came of the proposal. Prominent local architectural engineer and surveyor, William Edmunds, notified the Admiralty in a letter which survives to this day in the archives that attempts were being made by the boatmen of Margate to salvage the valuable cargoes, which were expected to be eventually forwarded to London by steamship as in other salvage operations undertaken here. From records in my possession it is clear that around 70 men were engaged in these efforts, and it is equally clear from research undertaken by my colleague, Alf Beeching, that a substantial amount of salvaged goods was stored in a large warehouse situated in King Street. “WESTMINSTER” had found bottom further out in the bay than “CLAUDINE” who had been driven right up under the cliffs, making her salvage impossible until a big tide to lift her off. She remained tight during her battering making no water, unlike “WESTMINSTER” which reported 12 feet of water in her hold. She was refloated on the 7th of December, and “CLAUDINE” a little while after. Both vessels were repaired and put back into trade. On the night of the 5th of December, the King Street warehouse was burgled despite the presence of a watchman who was arrested and then released without charge! Cotton, silks, indigo and wine were stolen, some of which were recovered in London after a £25 reward brought a informer forward. To Advertise in The Margate Handbook please Phone 01843 571145

LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY If for any reason, someone becomes incapable of making decisions for themselves, a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) gives another person or persons the right to make decisions on their behalf. Many people have a Lasting Power of Attorney written at the same time as their Will, making sure that all bases are covered so to speak. However, many people as they get older and more infirm should seriously consider who would take care of things if their condition deteriorates. This could be the first signs of dementia or another neurological disorder or because they have had a mild stroke. If an individual becomes incapable of making decisions for themselves and has not appointed another person as LPA, their personal affairs would become the responsibility of the Office of the Public Guardian who would then place their affairs under the jurisdiction of the Court of Protection. The Court then appoints a receiver to act on the client’s behalf and the Receiver is answerable to the Court.

In practice, if someone has a serious stroke for example, the Receiver would have to be asked to release funds for everyday financial matters to be carried out. Not only would their family have to come to terms with the grief and emotion of the illness, they would also have the added strain of dealing with officials for every decision. Also, they would have no official say about their loved one's medical treatment even if they knew what their wishes would have been. Although a family member or close friend can apply to the Court to become the Receiver, this takes time, money and ongoing costs. If they are successful there are still restrictions on what can be done without the Court's permission.

Jaci Godman Irvine specialises in Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney & Probate. She will visit you in the privacy of your own home, all fees are fixed.

DATE WITH DANA ………………………………………………………...Coming to the Rehearsals? The year is 1924, Ethel Barrymore, doyenne of the American acting dynasty, was directing her first play on Broadway, Among the cast was a young actress, an ingénue being given her first big break in the theatre. Came the first day of rehearsals. Ethel Barrymore decided to introduce a “bit of business” with a glass which she thought would enhance the scene. “Oh, but Miss Barrymore -”gushed the young actress” don’t you think it was better the first time?” Ethel Barrymore paused. “Very well, dear.” she said. Came the second day of rehearsals. Ethel Barrymore proceeded to cut a speech which she considered did nothing to promote the development of the play. But Miss Barrymore, “ stipulated the ingénue quite firmly, “ I must say that speech. I have to include it, it is necessary for my part.” Ethel Barrymore paused. “Very well, dear.” she said. Came the third day of rehearsals, when the Producer, puffing a cigar full of good will and concern, visited the theatre. “Well Ethel,,” he asked “How’s my play going? and how is the young one doing?” Ethel Barrymore paused. “Very well Max,” she said “It’s such a shame she won’t be with us tomorrow.” To Advertise in The Margate Handbook please Phone 01843 571145

Microwave Jam Ingredients 700 g (1½ld) Strawberries or other berries 700 g (1½ld) Caster Sugar Juice of 2 Lemons 1. Place the stoned fruit, caster sugar and the juice of two lemons in a 2 litre (3½ pint) deep microwaveproof dish. 2. If using a 650 watt microwave, cook on high for 15–20min, stirring once or twice. 3. Test for setting stand for 5min before pouring into warm jars. The set of this jam will be softer than conventional preserves and is best after two to three days. Setting point There are two good ways of testing this stage: 1. Spoon a little jam on to a chilled plate, then chill for 1–2min. If it crinkles when you run your finger through it, setting point has been reached. 2. Use a jam thermometer – when it reaches at least 110°C (230°F) the jam is at setting point. Potting tips Wash jars in hot water, drain, then leave to dry in a warm oven. Boil the lids. Always pour hot jam into warm jars, fill to the rim to allow for shrinkage on cooling. Cover with waxed discs, waxed side down, and dampened Cellophane covers, dampened side up For longer-term storage, cover with screw-on lids too. For best results, store jam in a cool dark place.

GRANDAD CHATS WITH BARRY THE BARBER Grandad was talking with Barry the Barber about something that Barry’s wife had said. “She was moaning at me about how us men have it so much better” said Barry. “What was it that she said then” asked Grandad. “Well she reeled off a long list of things” replied Barry “Just listen to what she said” Men are happier people. Your last name stays put. The Garage is all yours. Wedding Plans take care of themselves. Chocolate is just another snack. You can never be pregnant. Car mechanics tell you the truth. You don't have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Same work, more pay. Wrinkles add character. People never stare at your chest when you're talking to them. New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet. One mood all the time. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. You know stuff about tanks and engines. A five-day holiday requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. Your underwear is £3.50 for a three-pack. Three pairs of shoes are more than enough. You never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes. Everything on your face stays its original colour. The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades. You only have to shave your face and neck. You can play with toys all your life. One wallet and one pair of shoes -- one colour for all seasons. You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look. You can 'do' your nails with a pocket knife. You have freedom of choice concerning growing a moustache. You can do Christmas shopping for 24 relatives on 24th December in 24 minutes. No wonder men are happier. “Blimey, what brought all this on” said Grandad “Well it was while the World Cup was on, the England match was just about to kick off and all I said was, when you’ve finished cutting the lawn, will you make me a cuppa, then she just went into one” said Barry with a puzzled look on his face. SOME OPERATION DYNAMO MEMORIES PART THREE,

By Mick Twyman

Thousands of stretcher cases and minor wounds were dealt with at the first-aid stations which had been set up at Dreamland and the Winter Gardens and, of course, it must be remembered that many men were suffering from exhaustion and dehydration after being so long in action. At the Royal Sea Bathing Hospital 500 serious cases were dealt with, and at Margate General a further 230. Many of the cases handled by the Hospitals were spinal injuries caused by compression when vessels the troops were on had been hit by bombs and blown out from under their feet. This was known in service parlance as ‘getting the hammer’. 2

Every effort was made to ensure that all troops were given either a postcard or a telegram form to notify their families that they had arrived back safely in England. Well over 40,000 postcards were distributed here in this fashion and delivered free of charge by the General Post Office. During correspondence with veteran Mr. Earnshaw in 1999. I learned that his mother had kept the one he had sent from Margate, and she very kindly sent me a photocopy. There on the back of a rather indifferent view of the promenade at Westbrook was a brief few lines to mother and, in the little box where the stamp used to be stuck, just ‘B.E.F.’ in pencil! As the troops reached the Droit House at the end of their long trudge down the Jetty, those that still had their weapons were supposed to stack them on a pile and empty their pouches of ammunition. Dorothy Parker told me that some of the boys, no doubt in a mood of happiness brought on by their rescue, or perhaps because they were simply fed-up with things, and that is understandable after what they had been through and seen, didn’t wait to reach the weapons pile but dumped their rifles over the side of the Jetty into the water. Eagle eyes amongst the locals had watched this with interest, and when the tide ran out the weapons were retrieved from the sand, not by the Army but by the men if the Local Defence Volunteers who, under the directions of their Commanding Officer, Colonel Witts, thoroughly dried and cleaned them. At the first parade of these warriors after the Dunkirk affair was over, I was told, instead of the broomsticks and a couple of ancient Canadian Ross rifles they had been accustomed to the whole unit proudly sported the Lee-Enfields recovered from the water! For eight long days craft of all descriptions from the warships to mud-hoppers brought their weary and thankful human cargoes to the old Jetty. The people in Margate, just as those in other towns who heeded the call, had worked non-stop to meet all the demands made upon them. Very little rest had been possible and people were becoming as exhausted as the troops coming ashore, but that sort of thing always brings out the best in us British and they coped tremendously well. The last vessel arrived in the 4th of June and then, just as suddenly as the mad week had started, it was all over. Margate and its people could take a breather, they had certainly earned one. It had been a great relief to all that the Luftwaffe had not put in an appearance during the operations at the Jetty, as the vessels unloading and those crowding the Roads waiting their turn would have been sitting ducks. The Luftwaffe was busy at Dunkirk and, contrary to the general perception, the Royal Air Force had made incredible efforts to combat them. It seems almost unbelievable but apart from the wonderful eyes of the Royal Air Force the ground based air defences available here at the start of ‘Operation Dynamo’ consisted of just two Bren-Guns on the Jetty, although by its end their number had increased to four! Had they known and not been so occupied oven in France the Germans would have had a field day! That has to have yet another Dunkirk miracle of deliverance. Chaos reigned during ‘Dynamo’ and many of the figures quoted were wrong. Research has shown that the total of men landed at Margate was 49,346, the second highest total after Dover! MAKING A MINI POND You don't need a lot of space to make a water feature in your garden. Fill your chosen container with rainwater. If you must use tap water, leave this to stand for a couple of days to neutralise. Select your plants. Choose a combination of marginal's, aquatics and oxygenators. Plant the marginal's in aquatic baskets lined with hessian and filled with soil. Top dress with gravel. Place the water lily in its basket on the bottom of the pond the leaves will grow and float to the surface. Consider adding a ramp or piling stones at one edge of your container for wild life.

Not many bars or cafes can match the views from Margate Café G, as you watch the world go by, and take in the sights and sounds of the harbour and Old Town, life seems to slow down a pace. Margate is home to some wonderful eateries. Here at Café G located in Margate's Old Town is the fully licensed Café bar specialising in fresh pastries, light bites and a great range of Fairtrade products. The day at Café G begins at 7.30am with the glorious aroma of freshly ground coffee. Café G boasts a full range of speciality coffee including Café Latté, Cappuccino, Café Americano, Mocha, and a selection of flavoured coffee. There is also a fine array of teas, including herbal and fruit teas, hot chocolate served with cream marshmallows and topped with chocolate sprinkles, as well as milkshakes and soft drinks. Of course, the efficient service will ensure you are not left waiting, but if you really can't spare the time to sit and relax in the elegant décor watching the world go by there is a takeaway service. As owner of Café G I feel that Margate is more than ready for a Café of this calibre.
